I friggin hate Smart TVs.[/QUOTE]

Ok. But...

That discussion circles around the content and monetizing it, afaicu.
I do not see, how adding a display panel to the mix would benefit Apple in any way.
Actually, I would also prefer the dumbest panel available, with best picture quality I can afford.
And it could serve me much longer if I can select and connect the smartness around it myself.
Given that - I do not see much added value in Apple-branded display panel.
I have been upgrading my AppleTV regularily, though. Skipped only the Gen2 (first black puck, 720p).
And it has been very cheap, comparing to the amounts I've had to invest into the panels.

It makes the point that Apple have decided that content must become established first before they make a move towards an actual panel, and then describes the current state of content availability and Apples attempt to wrangle it.
You could say ‘in addition’ to the money you’ve had to invest in the panels; if you say imagine that you replace tv every 3-7 years ( and people vary on this obviously ) due to updating to meet changing specs over time (4K vs 1080p, hdmi, sound tech etc etc), and that most smart TVs features start to feel old after 3 or so years, it’s not beyond reason to just carry on a replacement schedule for a whole ATV just as before.
I understand the dumb panel smart + set top box(es)as well as anyone since that’s the well trod routine I’ve employed myself since atv2. I think the situation is changing, to the point that other brand TVs are going to offer what an Apple branded tv can offer before they offer it, just without the ecosystem. It just seems likely to me that the fabled ATV of old is a potential reality more than ever, since the ecosystem (and the development of it) is the remaining usp that Apple have left to offer. At least now, or never.
