If you're picking up a meal from a restaurant with waiters that would normally receive a tip anyway, leave at least a dollar.

----------

Why? What would they do? Chase me down the street demanding I tip them?

I've heard of this happening, even on modest checks.

On the CC machine I chalk it up to the CC service provider but I absolutely hate tip jars at counter service locations. Everybody has their hand out.

If I get change then I'll usually put the coins in the jar, but otherwise no.

Then again I get the impression that in the UK people (that is customers and restaurant workers) have absolutely no idea how tipping should work.

I don't mind tipping and will leave 10-15%- more if I have a great server, but I do begrudge leaving a tip if a restaurant has already slipped in a "service charge" at the bottom of a bill. Also how are tips you include with card payments split?

One bartender did that to me. Bad luck for him, cause the owner is a good friend of mine and he fired him next monday.
Really! That's just disrespectful! I won't allow a goddamn bartender treat me like that.

Sorry to tell you, pal, but the bartender wasn't the douchebag in this scenario. And if "your friend" fired him solely based on your ability to know that he was avoiding you based on your tipping, then the bartender got the better deal by not working for an assclown anymore.

The fact that you say "I won't allow a goddamn bartender..." shows the type of person you are. I wouldn't serve you at all.

I don't tip, or condone the use of hidden fees.

Scenario:

I was ordering some food in Singapore that (appeared to) cost SGD10. The waiter asked me "would you like bread or rice on the side?" I picked rice.

When the bill came, the price was:

10 SGD for the main dish
6 SGD for the rice
20% added service charge
7% added GST

Final price: Somewhere around 20 SGD, although the menu leads you to believe it cost 10, if you didn't read the fine prints.

If they forgot to add an item to my bill I certainly wouldn't notify them.
