It shows the time, but it doesn't help with splitting the actual clip. If anything, it just reminds you how much longer you're going to have to drag the bars until you're done!

Well yeah you can trim from the end or the beginning of the clip. The issue is maybe you want to trim something that is in the middle of the clip. Or you want to rearrange the clips of one big video.

Pretty much. I've created tons of videos throughout the years and usually I just start filming when I think something is going to happen. Most of the time, the meat of the content is in the middle of the video clip.
 
First update I'm hoping for with imovie..

loading your camera roll from the same spot you left it in.. starting from the beginning every time you're looking for a photo is annoying.. not to mention the scrolling of the camera roll is very clunky within the app.

or maybe i just have way too many photos.
 
I'm actually really dissapointed in the iMovie app. I thought what I wanted to do was obvious and simple, I just want to cut about 3 minutes out of the middle of a movie. I wanted to use the timeline to set markers and just trim. But either it can't perform this basic function or I'm missing something. Right now it's looking more like a $.99 program, certainly not a $5 one.
 
Hmmm... I have a video that in my camera roll is listed as 4 seconds. It is of someone talking.

When I try to use it in iMovie, it lists it as 3 seconds, and the end of the video is cut off (It cuts off while someone is finishing a sentence). I don't have any clips after it.

Ideas?

Work around:

1. Create a new project and add the photo and adjust Ken Burns to your liking.
2. Export just this as a video to your Camera Roll
3. Start a new project and import newly created video from Photo and you can now add titles to the Photo

Simple example shown here:

Annoying, but it works.
 
what does the pinching on a video clip do? i think i remember them talking about being able to pinch a video clip while creating the movie. is that a quicker way of shortening the clip, or is that just to zoom the video in and out?
 
Has anyone been able to trim the beginning of a clip?

I have been able to get the handles up and trim the end off a clip...but for the life of me I cannot take off the beginning of a clip. I am not as frustrated by the UI as others but feel like this is sort of a .9 release...there are a few weird quirks that I can't seem to get around...yet...

great tip!!!....id rather it be a tiny bit annoying, but work, then not work at all

Pinching shortens, or extends the timeline for more detailed editing, it does not edit the clips at all.

This works just as it should, but optically it looks like you are trimming the edit when you drag the handle to trim the beginning. Again this works perfectly for me, but optically it looks like I am trimming the end when I drag the handle for the beginning.
 
Fade to Black

Am I missing something, or is there no way to fade to black at the end??? This seems like an obvious, and easily added feature???

I tried this with a few different clips to see if I could replicate it, but I could not. Any chance you slightly edited the ending accidentally by clipping the end? You should trim clicking on the clip in iMovie and extending the end to see if that is what happened.

Does not appear to be easily done. Workaround:

1. Load a black picture on the phone created on your Mac, or take a picture of a black surface.
2. Add the black picture at the end of the video and you will automatically get a fade to black as iMovie will add the fade transition automatically.

This also has the benefit of allowing you to add credits to a black screen if you first create a clip from the black picture and save that to your Camera Roll and then you can keep it on the phone to use in all your videos, so only need to add workaround once.
