Yes, I know there will probably be a new Mac Pro released soon but my impatience led me to a great deal on eBay. I scored a brand NEW Mac Pro Server custom configured by Apple with the following specs:

    • Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)
    • 24GB (6x4GB) DDR3 ECC SDRAM
    • ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    • One 18x SuperDrive
    • Mac Pro RAID Card
    • HD Bay 1 - 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • HD Bay 2 - 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • HD Bay 3 - 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • HD Bay 4 - 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive

Apples price: $6,124.00 My eBay purchase: $3,145.00

Basically a $3,000.00 savings. Now I'll be eBaying my trusty ol' 2007 Macpro2,1

    :)

Wow, that's quite the catch! I hope there's nothing wrong with it.

It was advertised as New/Open box. I was skeptical but the sellers track record was pristine. It was exactly as advertised, brand new but the box had been opened and re-sealed. Everything was included. There was not one mark on the exterior and the inside didn't have one speck of dust. It had never been powered on.
    I'm jazzed!:D

It wants me to verify the original purchase date, which I don't have. I used to buy Applecare with all my purchases but after some real issues with Apple & Applecare a couple years ago I will never buy it again.

I understand the skepticism on AppleCare, but I cannot imagine paying 3000+ on a new computer and not paying 180$ for a 3 year warranty... You do realize that the cost of the logic board on one of those is quite absurd. And should you decide to sell it prior to AppleCare expiring, you would fetch a higher value. People are far more trusting buying a machine that they have at least a short warranty period on rather than none at all.

Also, there is a chance that your model is beyond the 1-year mark of original purchase. This may have been a reason why the seller accepted less for it. Means nothing for the integrity of the machine, but just sucks because you may not have the opportunity to buy applecare.

If you do decide you want it, you may need to call Apple direct. I know that their sales rep's are allowed to bend the rules sometimes to make the extra money off warranty sales (which IMO proportionately is worth it on a Mac Pro).

THIS. ALSO what a lot of people don't know is the serial number tells apple when the machine was built.

    I would use the second site first;

((((( this is one site http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php it is worth a few bucks for a few reasons. you are protected by ebay if the machine is a stolen machine. this site would help determine that. if it is a stolen machine you could get your money back from ebay using the buyer protection program. )))))

it also would give you a build date. so if your machine is under 365 days from build date apple would sell you the applecare. think of it this way 6000 became 3000 so if you spend a few dollars here say 20 and spend 180 on apple care 6000 became 3200 but you have a full machine with a warranty and you know it was not stolen.

i will look for another serial decoding site.

I found the free site for lookups!

this is a free site I have purchased repair parts from them.

    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php

I purchased this mac mini from amazon 30 days ago. I have the receipt but you can see it was built sept of 2011. this is a free site I put the serial number in and it popped out.

How much are those components worth though? I imagine the Mac Pro's shell alone has a tag of $1000+

Odd... My serial is not found on 3 sites so far. I'm guessing because it's a BTO Mac Pro server? Maybe?

There is a sticker (from apple) over the original serial on the back of the Mac showing the BTO configuration with a serial that matches the serial in "System Information". Serial: H01460DGHPW

Wow, what a great deal. BTW, what brand and with how much cache are the hard drives? Just curious.

All drives have the apple logo on the label. All are 7200 rpm and have 32 MB Cache.

    Bay #1 : 1TB
    Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 32MB 7200 RPM

    Bay #2 #3 #4 : 2TB
    HITACHI Deskstar 7K2000 HDS722020ALA330 2TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

I have to say. I'm not one of those really picky people that complain about a little fan noise, HD noise or a couple dead pixels. But.... The Hitachi's are the loudest drives I've heard in several years. They make a lot of racket when reading & writing. But I've had my case open playing with things for a couple days. :D

I have to say when Apple replaced my WD Black with a Seagate, I immediately noticed that the Seagate was much louder and was a bit disappointed.

It's probably not asking for verification.. if the machine was never registered , it doesn't know.

    https://register.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GlobaliReg.woa

Any valid date based on the date on manufacture will become the official purchase date.

also by looking at the serial number I can tell you it was built week 46 of 2011.

Bingo. I was scrolling down seeing how long it was going to take someone to peg the info. Apples asking for a date because it's never been registered.. although since it was a BTO it should be in their system, which is odd.

one would think BTO's get pre registered, but they don't.... IFAIK the only time a machine is registered at time of purchase is when it's bought at an Apple retail store.

    Thanks

Thanks to everyone for their help and insight. At lease now I know when my machine was built and that I can most likely get Applecare for it if I decide to at a later date. :apple:

Good to hear, can I ask where on ebay you got this deal, I might just have to pull the trigger on a good deal like this.

I ordered my BTO in August 2010. After it arrived I bought AppleCare from B&H. Apple was unable to find either my machine or my customer information in their system. I had to email Apple the order confirmation before me, my Mac Pro and AppleCare could be linked. It reminded me of places I've worked were one office doesn't know what the office next door is doing.
