theres been alot of reports with photos of scratches on the black finish. Even on the first day. Some of the YouTube tech reviewers have reported scratches as well.
I scored an Ultra 2 in black, in store, on the first day of sales. Kept my plain U2 as a backup... Have got several marks on it from collisions and they have all rubbed off. Material transferred from the subject of the collision onto the watch and so far the watch is fine. It does shown splashes of sweat etc much more then the plain version so if you are active it will need more attention to stay looking good. If I manage to dent or gouge it and remove the coating some Testors or similar will cover it up. Methinks a number of the reported scratches are really deposits that can easily be wiped off. Might even be one at the start of this thread! Edit: Whoops that was in another related thread 🙁

I would like to know because for me PVD=dealbreaker whereas DLC=take my money. ;) My AppleWatch 6 Space Black Ti with DLC looks like new and I have used it while hiking, swimming, biking,...
“Come 2024, the Ultra 2 is getting a tough-as-nails black titanium refresh with an accompanying Milanese loop. “The diamond-like carbon coating is even harder than the surface of natural titanium,” says Anderson. “If you scratch it on anything apart from maybe diamond, you're going end up with that object on your watch rather than scratching the coating off.”

What? It either is DLC or not. No where can I find it says it is DLC. At best PVD. They are miles apart when it comes to durability.

They genuinely, officially say both. Check their press release:

Go to the 23 minute mark of the keynote, this is word for word what they said during it.

Edit: didn’t see the above post before reply.

funny I posted a similar poll but did not say titanium vs U2 but series 10 vs US, series ten won the poll by a wide margin. Never understood the cheap watch and why it is so popular.

So. Coming from a DLC coated Series 4 Stainless Steel Space Black which still looks brand new, not a nick or a scratch on it anywhere.

Going to a Series 10. Don't love the Aluminum aka Sport for the ion-x glass that is inferior though the Jet Black mostly matches my Series 4 SBSS finish. So that leaves me with a choice of either the:

Series 10 Titanium in Slate Gray w/ either Nike Sport Band or Slate Grey Milanese (assume all my Series 4 bands will fit??) for $749 or $799.

OR

Ultra 2 in the new Black with either an Ocean Bank or the Black Milanese (and I think there is some band compatibility but they are dwarfed) for $799 or $899 depending again on which band I choose.

Any input?

How does the Ultra casing hold up to knocking into door knobs and such?
Depends of which size Apple Watch Series 4 you are coming from. Is your space black Apple Watch Series 4 a 44mm model? If yes, get the Apple Watch Ultra if your wrists can fit in the bands perfectly.

I would get slate if I was in your position as I cannot fit the Apple Watch Ultra, it is a bold choice while it is a brick 🧱 on my wrist.

The S10 wears really well, more than I was expecting after having started down this road with the S0 at launch. I’ve usually opted for stainless, so the lighter weight of the titanium is a bonus.

I think the AWU 2 in black looks great, though it’s a bummer they kept the orange button. I got tired of wearing the AWU 2 after a while, but I’d give the AWU 3 a look depending on what‘s redesigned.

the biggest thing for me was i work outside a lot and when its bright outside the extra viewing angle doesn't really matter but the higher nits of the ultra 2 does. honestly if i could afford to keep both i would as there both good for different situations. i may pick up a jet black S10 to switch between but im not sure yet

I have both and I use for my series 10 for work and I do notice it's barely a one day watch. often it's down to about 40% by the end of my working day. Normally as I leave for work I put on my ultra 2 and I do my sleep tracking with my ultra 2 and put my series 10 on in the morning as I get up for work

Well, between the aluminum and steel/titanium, the watch is a gadget I replace every 2-3 years, so never saw the point of paying extra just for the better casing material.

Between the looks of Ultra and regular watches, that's personal preference. While personally, I like the rugged look of the Ultra, I can understand how people might prefer the simple look of the S10.
