I mean no offense, but as I'm reading this, I'm seeing some exec at Tivo reading your post and saying to the team, "Shut it down, boys. This guy Tilpots--over at the MacRumors forum--he says it's too late."

I have nothing to add, I just thought this was funny and deserved a mention. It actually made me laugh out loud in my office at work! :D

I laughed a bit myself.:p

But I gotta say, my new mini running Plex and Eyetv is frackin' awesome. It's cheaper than a Tivo HD with a lifetime subscription, too.

So they announced the TiVo premiere.

Still doesn’t support unencrypted digital cable (Clear QAM), no two-way CableCard support, still charging a ridiculous monthly fee for guide data, add-ons are expensive as always ($90 for Wi-fi, $$ for the new QWERTY remote), etc.

Oh yeah, if you’ve forked over the money for a Series 3 — forget it. You’re not getting the updated interface.

On the positive, the new Flash-based interface looks nice and the hardware’s design is sharp (as always).

But it’s still the same old TiVo and unfortunately for shareholders it’s the same old declining business model.

"Its answer is the TiVo Premiere, due to hit retail stores in early April in TiVo's first product launch in more than two years. The $499 Premiere XL will be able to store up to 150 hours of high-definition TV on its 1-terabyte hard drive. The $299 Premiere can store up to 45 hours of HD TV on its 320-gigabyte hard drive. The DVR uses Adobe Systems Inc.'s Flash software, which is widely deployed on the Web and will enable TiVo to let third-party developers create applications for the new units.

The prices of the new DVRs are comparable to the current line. They will require subscription fees ranging from $12.95 a month to $299 for three years. Customers can also choose to pay the fees in one lump sum of $399 to last the life of the unit.”

Doesn't look good. I just wanted a DVR. I could do without everything else.

I guess it is time to try the Comcast's DVR or switch to Satellite.

See I’m the opposite. I wanted TiVo to make an Internet box with an optional DVR, create their own app store and platform for developers/content providers and take TiVo to the next generation.

As for the DVR, the $12.95+ per month needs to go, the additional fees for multi-TiVo households needs to go also, DirecTV needs to come back on board, Sling-like capabilities need to be added, networked TiVos need to be able to coordinate recordings with each other and TiVo needs to support basic features like clear-QAM, ATSC program data and two-way CableCard.

And while we’re thinking outside the box, they should offer on-the-fly hardware MPEG-2 to H.264 encoding to save disk space, support networked PC tuners (like the HD HomeRun), offer mobile apps for iPhone, Android and Palm and offer a PC/Mac app that allows you to interface with your TiVos and run the full-blown TiVo interface on your computer.

It’s not 1999 anymore. This company suffers from a lack of vision.

I don't want flash I want them to push this out to Series 3 boxes, at least some of it. Bastards.

was hoping for more news on

1- this being tru-2-way cablecard
2- also having built in Directv HD compatibility, with full VOD integration into directv systems
3- full macintosh compatibility, access to video over network or even from away.
4- ability to burn content to blu-ray discs via toast. or even to save programming to remote hard drives based in the same network. so we could then continue to add more storage for content over time that we would want to keep.
5- Multi-Room Viewing. to be able to watch content from around the house on the same network. ir

would love all of this. tired of restrictions. and waiting.

I used a Tivo Series 3 for a long time after they were first released. It was a great unit that did more than I wanted it to do. Every DVR feature was first rate and I even came to rely on Tivo Suggestions to the point where I stopped watching live TV. I loved my Tivo.

That was 2006 - 2007. It is now 2010. I've moved beyond cable. Tivo has not.

I was hoping the Series 4 would be a forward looking TV/Internet bridge device that brought the best of a Slingbox together with the best of the WDTV Live hardware. Tivo Series 4: Beyond TV or something similar.

All the pieces are there, the remote (though lacking in slider quality according to reviews) is a brilliant way to implement a QWERTY keyboard for a TV. I just see a lack of courage to step up to the next level and really drag it all forward. That is just really disappointing. I have no use for a device used to access cable or satellite since I stopped paying Comcast $75 - $100 per month for access to what I can acquire cheaper through Netflix or free internet streaming (Hulu et al).

Bye Tivo. I had an excellent time with you..

So what's wrong with their existing boxes then? It sounds they suit your needs perfectly.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth aren't built-in, so there are extra charges for the Wi-Fi ($90?) and BT USB dongles. (BT is required if you want...again, extra charge...the QWERTY remote.)

Of course, the TiVos only come with two USB ports, so if I want to plug in my two dongles and my cable company tuning adapter I now need to add a USB hub hanging off the back of my TiVo? What a disaster...

Kinda glad I got the HD XL late last year. I can get a lot of this other new stuff through my Apple TV.

They tried that with Windows and it was a major flop.

Missed that. Thanks for pointing it out

Think they'd sell just the software? Me neither...

Apparently, I was wrong.

FWIW they actually did experiment with just that with Nero up until the end of 2009. http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2008/09/hands-on-neros-liquidtv-tivo-for-your-pc.ars.

As noted, my bad.

TiVo posts 10.2 million dollar loss, subscribers down again

ALVISO, Calif. — Digital video recorder pioneer TiVo Inc. said Monday that its fourth-quarter loss widened as higher expenses, especially in research and development for new products, more than offset an increase in revenue.

Last week, TiVo unveiled its first new DVR in nearly three years, the TiVo Premiere. The new unit, which comes in configurations of 320-gigabyte and 1-terabyte hard drives, more seamless blends broadcast TV and the Internet and signals TiVo's view of the future of TV.

In the fourth quarter, TiVo lost $10.2 million, or 9 cents per share, compared to a loss of $3.6 million, or 4 cents per share, in the same quarter in the prior year.

…

Meanwhile, TiVo has been struggling to find new users in the face of competition from cable companies, which generally offer their customers less sophisticated DVRs as part of their overall cable plans. TiVo-owned subscription gross additions were 46,000 in the quarter, down 22%. At the end of the quarter, there were about 1.5 million TiVo-owned subscribers and 2.6 million total subscribers.

...

"Looking ahead, TiVo said it expects to book service and technology revenue of $41 million to $43 million in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2011, far below the $48.8 million expected by analysts. The company forecast a loss of $19 million to $21 million. Analysts were expecting a loss of $5.5 million.”

Maybe Apple should buy TiVo. They could pick up the entire company for a few billion. TiVo’s DVR patent could be worth that alone.

The Apple TV needs a kickstart anyway.

Sucks. TiVo has wonderful products, but like everything else.. it seems like people vote with their dollars, and crappy.. cheap and partially broken products prevail too often.

I hate cable company DVRs with a passion.
