It wasn’t that long ago that it was Apple vs the world. Android users boasted about how big their market share was, about how “open” their platform was, of the lack of flash support, of hardware features like expandable storage that either came later, or never came at all to iOS devices. In the face of this overwhelming opposition and negativity, there was a special pride that brought us Apple users together. It took a certain amount of personal conviction to stand against “the default” of windows / android dominance. Year after year, Android users would laugh at us for “paying more for less”, and we endured, and we thrived.
Some people on either side laughed, but then there were some neat platforms like WebOS and Windows Phone and Ubuntu Touch and some other stuff...

In the US, iPhones are the default. For the most part if you sit in a crowded place and watch people use phones it'll either be iPhones or Samsungs. I like the novelty of weird phones, like the folding ones and the camera enthusiast ones, the gaming enthusiast ones, the nothing phone and the fairphone and other stuff...

Honestly I get the vibe that some people tie too much of their personality into what phone they use, what car they drive, or other similarly trivial things. Use what you like because you like it, and don't worry too much about what other people use and enjoy.

I found I'm attracted to new shiny stuff. The really funny thing about that is the apple watch is the best 'new shiny' platform. Apple always comes out with neat new features and watch faces! WearOS is such a drag by comparison! I friggin love the snoopy watch face, and the mickey mouse watchface is also one of my favorites. Then there's the other cool looking stuff. WearOS barely has any of that.....

So in the age of folding phones and flip phones and gaming phones, well, I get stuck with a giant orange slab lol. That said, the performance is pretty sweet!

Thank you!

Air has been so much better than the Pro I came from and fits *my* needs.

Love to be the new tech adopter.
As someone that has never--and likely will never--buy a Pro phone, the Air is great. The fallacy for people is they're comparing it the pro. But I'd estimate that 80-90% of Pro purchasers should be buying the Air or regular phone. When I had the 14 Plus, I had friends with the 14 Pro Max that were jealous when they realized I had the 2nd lightest phone that year, tied for the largest screen, the best battery life, etc. They'd tell me how much greater the camera was, then do a side-by-side with the phones and realize they were assuming the regular phone cameras were like using something from 10 years ago. When I had the 12 mini, I had about half dozen people that thought it seemed so tiny at first, but then shortly thereafter went and got one.

Reality is that most people don't by the Pro because it's the best for them, they buy it due to FOMO. And yet if they bought the Air or even the regular 17, they'd be perfectly fine. Their pics would be great, they'd have all-day battery life, it would be zippy, etc etc.

Yep! The way I see it, there are three types of people who buy Pro models.

  • Content Creators - these are folks who truly need the Pro features such as ProRAW or Log recording, etc. Pro models are affordable solutions to create contents compared to expensive cameras/lenses out there.
  • the FOMO group - like you said, these folks want the Pro models because they "might" need that feature which they almost never do. Many folks I know in my family/friends circle have Pro models but they don't even bother tweaking any settings.
  • the Social Climber group - these folks buy Pro models because they are the best that Apple has to offer and buying them makes them feel important around their folks. It gives them satisfaction knowing they own a Pro or a Pro Max model.
Majority of the people out there will be fine with a basic phone.

14+ was the best Apple iPhone I have ever owned!

Loved the large screen, light weight, and fantastic 2 day battery life.

This new Air is just the same thing I missed when I made a mistake going to the 16 Pro but had to for AOD.

Now the Air has AOD with 2 day battery life and that's most important for me.

Alas, the Air is intended to replace the iPhone SE3 so it's both heavier and much bigger. The SE3 is far easier to use one-handed. I'm annoyed that phones are going bigger and bigger. Alas, I can't keep using the SE3 forever.
In what world is it intended to replace the SE3? The SEs are designed around a price point. The e replaced the SE.

Pre-order the Air on release day (was wondering why the Air was in stock at most of the stores), and it didn’t work out for me. I couldn’t justify and tried to force myself in liking the Air. Coming from 15PM, the compromised was not worth it. I do enjoyed the form factor and lightweight.

So returned the Air today, and hoping 17PM in orange is available for pick up.

I'm not for one second saying there are some widespread issues, but with all the patina fading, paint chipping, dinting and screen popping of the Pro models I wonder if Air owners felt a certain level of smugness for having a phone that has very few drawbacks but is both as thin as a pencil and practically indestructable by Apple standards?

I love my Air.

Every time I try to zoom when taking a photo and it looks grainy, I just remember how light the phone is. And then I pass gas and sniff it and just feel so much better about everything.

Is it not a little patronising addressing the iPhone Air users and insinuating that they, all, as a collective, care about your respect or view on them?

Yeah, I get what you mean. Wasn’t trying to come across like that at all though. Just meant it in a light way since there’s been a lot of negativity around the Air lately. Everyone’s got their own reasons for what they buy, I just like seeing people enjoy their choice, that’s all.
