It has always been this way... it's just Verizon fanboys and paid Verizon gulls in the media attack AT&T without any real hard evidence.

When I mean hard evidence I mean, "Oh but I heard AT&T was bad and my Verizon phone is good, blah blah blah". Hard evidence is you tried AT&T for 30 days.

Also, OP, AT&T's speeds are about to get better with the new fiber + ethernet backhauls that AT&T is currently deploying.

Here is your hard evidence. Taken in a 100% AT&T and Verizon EVDO coverage area in Jacksonville, FL. My Droid against my buddy's iPhone 3GS.

Why are you testing on different servers? Wouldn't the test have been more accurate using the same server?

I'm not hating, just curious! (perhaps it defaulted to them) :)

What would i possibly gain by lying about this? I'll try to get over to his house tomorrow and take videos to show you what I'm seeing.
We set the overdrive to 3G only and the speeds were twice as fast.
Using 4g with 3 bars connection, we hit 56KB down...but setting it to use 3G and getting 3 bars, it got about 100KB down.
Using my jail broken 3GS and mywi I got 230KB down...
With the overdrive, going outside raised the speeds dramatically(the speeds I listed were all done with it outside)...
I posted this to share my experiences...I just feel that even with a weakish signal, the 4g should at least be comparable to the AT&T 3G speeds...but unfortunately they aren't in my area.
I'll try to get some videos or at least screenshots if i can...anyone claiming that I am lying or whatever: what exactly do you think am getting out of this?
I was personally interested in the evo 4g because of the wimax support, but after seeing the speeds and comparing to my AT&T 3G speeds I am defintely going to stay with AT&T and get the new iPhone. I knew there were others in the same boat as me so i thought i would share my experience..
Maybe there's something wrong with his overdrive....we've tried many different settings. If anyone has any suggestions, please share!

Umm what do you have to gain by lieing.

Prove that you are an Apple Fanboy nothing more. I have read things from multiple other people saying other wise and most of those people are much more reputable than an apple fanboy.

^btw, this thread has absolutely nothing to do with dropped calls (although i can personally say that I never drop calls on att here in NC...im sure its different in other areas though)...

this thread is all about 3g and 4g download speeds....the stuff that matters to users who are tethering, etc.

if you do a little research, you will see that its widely known that att has the fastest 3g network(contrary to the advertising you may see on tv), i will gladly find several sources to back that up, and you can see above that my speed test on att was MUCH faster than the person a couple posts up who did it with their droid on verizon.

i find it quite hilarious that you are calling me a fanboy....if you would take the time to read any of my past posts on here, you would likely find your statement to be patently false. Just because this site/forum IS completely full of ignorant "apple is better than anyone, steve jobs is my god" fanboys, doesnt mean that everyone who posts on here is.

I use a Nexus one on tmobile (didnt include any of its info on the speed test because i am not getting 3g in my area)..and i also have an iphone 3gs in att.
The only apple products i have are an iphone and a mac mini. I buy what I like and it really has little to do with the company that makes it.
In fact, the whole reason for this thread was based off of my desire to find another phone out there that would suit me better than what I currently use...i dont think diehard apple fanboys are out there looking to purchase a product from the competition.
I wouldnt be surprised to find out that you likely own more apple products than I do. I honestly dont know why i take the time to reply to comments like these...its very likely that I am unfortunately responding to a 12 year old child.
oh macrumors, wish there was a way to check id, or at least level of education.. ;)

Translation: I have absolutely no rebuttal to your post and am just grasping at straws.

Owned.

I guess this "owned" word is the new cool thing kids say at school nowadays. :D

And what of the AT&T fanboy?

Not an AT&T fan but Im happy with their service. If the iphone was on Tmobile or another provider I wouldnt be with them unlike some VZ fans.

<snip> if you do a little research, you will see that its widely known that att has the fastest 3g network(contrary to the advertising you may see on tv) <snip>

What advertising? Where? I haven't seen any advertising stating that any other carrier (except maybe Sprint's 4G) is faster than AT&T (in an optimum situation.)

But if you just poke your head outside of this forum, you will hear a ton of AT&T users screaming about service issues. Seems a lot of people here have had a sip of the AT&T kook-aid. (haha...meant kool-aid...what a funny typo though!)

What do you mean like some VZ fans? I truly don't understand what you meant by that statement. Are you implying that we blindly want an iPhone on Verizon for no reason?

I have personally had service will all of the top 3 carriers. Signal and data services proved to be the best for me on Verizon. But I wanted to try an iPhone when the 3G came out so I switched to AT&T (this is when I actually tried my 3rd carrier). But I had more dropped calls in the first 3 months of my AT&T service than I had in 3 years of Sprint and Verizon service. (This was on a Samsung A747...not the iPhone....but issues continued on the iPhone.) Sooooo...yeah...I'd like to keep using an iPhone, but on a more reliable carrier. In my experience, Verizon was more reliable. Does this make me a fanboy? No, this makes me a guy that is making a practical decision based on experience. But for some reason it appears I have been labeled a fanboy by someone who doesn't know me.

Edited....

Not you, I was just saying in general.
Im lucky to have great AT&T coverage where I live.
I know its not the same everywhere in the US and not one single carrier can be perfect on every location.

This is very true. Then why do you hate on those that would like to see a Verizon phone so much? Why do you call them fanboys? Some of us truly get better service on Verizon...and we know it from actual experience.

Did you not even freaking read my cot damn post? I plainly said that it's dependent on the location and I know that bigger cities are often slower.

And any talk of call quality or dropped calls doesn't have anything to do with this thread.

My speeds are very acceptable...as you can see from my results...I'll gladly share the results I get when connected to the overdrive using 4g and using 3g.

This is a forum...it has threads consisting of textual conversations. It really helps to read the text completely before posting your own thoughts on the subject. Here in Dallas, TX I would rank T mobile and ATT best voice coverage and probably text messages. Most of my friends complained that it took 5-6 rings before I pick up my phone (sprint), but I usually pick it up when it rings one time. Last year when I was in college, I didn't have any reception when I was in class or library, but ATT and TM both had great reception. I tested text messages, and I sent to one of my friends who has Sprint, and other two T mobiles. Friends with TM received text way before my other Sprint friend did.
Internet speed wise, my Palm Pre beat out my friends 3gs and TM BBs, but not by much.

I dont hate, I hope they do get it but Im seeing the obvious signs that its not going to happen this year.
Its only realism on my part and not anything towards Verizon. I think down the road they will eventually get it. Dont know when but Verizons TV ads and advertising tactics wouldnt help towards building a partnership between Verizon and Apple.

really? My friends w/ T-Mob can't get reliable service. And I had more dropped calls on AT&T in 3 months that I had on Sprint & Verizon in 3 years. Guess it depends on what part of Dallas you're in.

I honestly think that business is business. SJ won't take these things personally. He knows as soon as he signs w/ Verizon, they will be singing the praises of the iPhone. It's just business....nothing more.

Sometimes a lot of the "realism" in this forum turns into attacking. (edit)

Yeah, I definitely think it depends on what part of Dallas. I have friends that live in Garland, Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Haltom City and I would say Tmobile has the best voice coverage.

I'm still with Sprint waiting for the Evo :)

True, you're probably right.
When they do get together they will flip the script and do a 360.
Money is everything but again Apple is a very stuborn corp that doesnt forgive or forget easy.
The "yeah right" part was just me thinking out loud but I see what you're saying :D

Dear everyone,

Once again...this thread has nothing to do with dropped calls/voice quality.

Also...we all know that different locations will yeild different results.

Thankyou

love,

They are both very stubborn....as the Engadget article pointed out. This is my biggest worry. Hopefully Verizon has learned a lesson and will back down a bit. I think they know this. They need to let go of their stupid handset modding crap.

I've never had a chance to compare to 4G, but honestly I'm pretty amazed and satisfied with the speeds that my Iphone 3G gets on youtube.

It doesn't seem that much slower if slower at all than the speeds I get on my computer at home (wifi to a router that is connected to Fios... I suspect I'm limited by my wifi though ;) ).

And I've never really seen a big advantage to connecting my iphone to wifi (I just leave it to 3G even when I'm at home or somewhere I know has wifi. Shoot, my 3G is faster than Fry's Electronics' Wifi ;) ).

So the thread you linked to shows what? Number of dropped calls per the folks asked? What does that have to do with the speed.... you know the topic the thread is actually about? You actually owned yourself!! Great job!
Now THESE numbers show speed which is what I think you meant to link to right?

My post was in response to another member saying something different about service quality.

But of course I wouldn't expect an illiterate buffoon to be able to read that part. LOL.
