I didn't read the other posts (as there's some redundancy here :D )

But, as others have probably said, Apple takes great pains 'to keep you in the dark' as to future releases. And just maybe they do this to avoid this sort of thing. In other words: your wait may be long and frustrating. :D

Thank you

Thank you all for your input and opinions.

On Monday, I walked into the apple store and told the sales person that i was looking to purchase 1...maybe 2 iPads.

After a long talk with the guy, I walked out with just one, as a Christmas gift to my mom. The salesperson simply said..."if you waited this long, what's a few more months?!"

That convinced me to wait....until I saw that 1st gen iPads are going for as low as $250-300 on craigslist.

Now I'm torn all over again. To wait or to buy a used 1st gen NOW. My husband keeps telling me to WAIT and that I'll regret not waiting, but I buy and sell things in eBay ALL the time. If I buy a iPad 1 now and the iPad 3 is awesome when it comes out...i'll sell the 1 and buy the 3. No biggie, right?

If I find the right deal, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take the plunge and buy a used one now. Who knows what the iPad 3 will bring and at what price tag.

Thanks again for all the replies!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! :)

Maybe this will help: Ask someone who already has an iPad 2 if they would like to go without it until the iPad 3 is announced. I think you will mostly get "no".

I am absolutely dying to get an iPad 3--I can't wait. But I would not want to go without my 2 for even one day before that. I already have 2 people lined up that are wanting to buy my iPad 2 when I buy the new one and if they both fall through, there's always Gazelle.com or ebay.

hmmmm. interesting perspective. thanks!

On the other side of the coin: if you don't already have an iPad, going without is much easier.

I don't know if "most" people would have trouble going without, but there's certainly a lot of people who would. As for me, I could go without mine, but I wouldn't like it. :D

Edit: also, keep in mind that, once the iPad3 comes out, the iPad1 will drop in price. I don't know how much, but it'll probably be very significant if the iPad3 has the rumored retina display (20%? 30%?? more???).

Edit 2: currently, note that there are problems with iMessage if the iPad/iPhone is sold/lost/stolen, as there appears to be no way to prevent the iOS device from receiving your iMessages after being sold/lost/stolen (wiping the device or removing the SIM card doesn't help). Supposedly (and I haven't verified this), one way to prevent this is to turn off iMessages in Settings *BEFORE* wiping and transferring the iOS device. If you plan on selling the iPad, please be aware of this. This isn't a new issue, but it still doesn't seem to be widely known: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/12/20/imessages-reportedly-still-sent-to-stolen-iphones/

I thought the problem with iMessage is only with iPhones. That is, even after wiping an iPhone, iMessages still get sent through the phone's SIM card. With iPads, simply wiping the iPad should stop iMessage from sending text to that iPad. This is true even with the 3G iPads, since iPad SIM cards aren't used to send / receive iMessages.

Well, although I've only seen reports on the iPhone, the issue is related to the device UDID, which also exists on the iPad. I've been assuming that the issue also exists on the iPad, but maybe not. Still, I'd be paranoid and take all of the precautions before selling it.

Well, MacWorld is saying that the surefire way to stop iMessages from being sent to previous iPhones is to call up the carrier and get them to deactivate the SIM.

If this is true, then it's a SIM card issue, and device UDID isn't involved. And as I said before, since iMessage on iPads don't use the SIM card, the problem is pertinent to iPhones only.

Maybe. However, as people have shown, you don't even need a SIM card with iPhones: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/13681350/

Quoted, from the above URL:
iCloud isn't really related to iMessages. One doesn't even need to have an iCloud account to send and receive iMessages. A phone without a SIM card, and a wifi connection is all you need it seems.

The more pertinent info, I believe is this:
I just tested it for you, and it works. I removed all of the iCloud stuff from my old iPhone 4. Under the messages settings, it just shows my phone number under "Receive At". I have no way to remove that phone number even though there is no SIM card in it. I can send and receive iMessages just fine. Regular SMS messages don't work though.

iMessage is tied to that phone number somehow, and that's why iMessages continue to be sent to the phone. Since iMessage on the iPad is never tied to a phone number, just email addresses, I doubt the problem applies to the iPad, or to iPod touches.

I hope you're right. :D

I'm kinda in the same situation, I want an iPad, but not sure if I want the 2 or 3...although, every year I purchase a new iPhone. Apple products really hold their value and there NO doubt you'd be able to get a great return on it, being it's only a couple months old and still with a warranty.

Just be sure not to engrave any letters on the back of it...kinda hard to sell an iPad when you have "Joe Blow" inscribed on the back of it.

The more I use the iPad, the more I'm glad that I did not wait!

No retina display yet, big whoop. This thing is great. I just got my new case too, and it fits perfectly. Works great as a stand as well.

I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, but I'd suggest that if you have the money and the burning desire, I don't see much point in denying yourself 3-4+ months of iPad usage. You can always upgrade at any time. It's not like an iPhone where you're saddled with a contract.

/off to play on iPad again...

I owned an iPad 2 up until yesterday. I decided to sell it on craigslist. I had a 16gb wifi only ipad 2 and I was able to get $450 for it!!! Thats $50 for 7 months! I decided to sell now because I have a feeling Apple is going to dump the price to $299 of the iPad 2 to compete with the cheaper tablets. Also once Apple announces the iPad 3, EVERYONE is gonna try and sell their iPad 2. So now i'll play the waiting game which is fine for me because I really want the retina display.

I've had the iPad 2 since early November & was tempted to return it before the holiday return deadline to wait for the iPad 3's release. I figured a few more months wouldn't hurt, but have decided to keep mine even if Apple lowered the price & kept the iPad 2 around. Quite simply, I'd miss my iPad during the few months of waiting. So each to their own -- but I agree with a previous post that it's easier to go without one if you don't already have it! ;)

I understand. However, for me I rarely used the iPad 2 because of the screen resolution. My iPhone 4 spoiled me... So I want the iPad 3 if and only if it has a retina display.

So I got an iPad 2 for Christmas. I have an iPad 1 now and use it constantly. Should I return it and hold out for the 3? The rumored new display would be great, but not hugely important. 4g means nothing since I do wireless only. But I don't know what the other new stuff that might be on the 3.

In this situation, I would hold out for the 3. You already have an iPad -- period -- in possession even if you return the 2. Is there anything wrong with your iPad 1?

I got a Samsung Tab 7.0 PLUS to tide me over until the iPad 3. I have to say, I really like the smaller form factor.

We have an iPad 1 so the iPad 2 seemed like a waste to me.
