I'm in the same boat as the OP as well, but I want one on PAYG. It's either I buy one in January, or wait till July for the next gen.

Well, I followed fate and picked up two new 16g iPhones yesterday. My wife's phone bit it in the morning so she needed one. And I guess I just followed suite, what a shame...:D

One needs to jump in the game at some point. It is now time to avoid macrumors so I don't get caught up in everyone's problem with the iPhone.

Cheers,
Mike

Would you be kind enough to tell me, which software it came with? I want to know how fast Iphones are selling :)

I want to say it was 2.1#(7?) and I did have to do a firmware update to 2.2. I purchased the iPhone at an AT&T store in Redmond WA.

Cheers,
Mike

If you're going to wait until January you might as well wait until June, and if you're going to wait until June you might as well wait until January (next January). See the vicious cycle you end up falling into? Just go for it. If you like the phone then get it, there is no sense in endlessly waiting for something based purely on speculation without any credible evidence whatsoever. No matter what you buy it will always be yesterdays news by tomorrow. Just get it for what it's worth. If you legitimately have beef with the capabilities of the current iPhone, then make sure you recognize that some things might change when the new iPhone is released (probably in 2010), and some things might not. Chances are you're still not going to get MMS, for example. So really, if you're waiting for a speculative hardware upgrade with speculative software upgrades, chances are you're basically fueling a fantasy (as many people on these forums are).

I see your logic, but the same time, 3 weeks is a teensy bit more manageable than 6-7 months.

Why would they announce a phone in January, then release it in July? What do you think would happen to the sales of the Iphone 3G? They won't announce a new Iphone, or a storage bump, unless it is available, the same or next day. They would be losing sales announcing something that is not available right away

The 3g didn't come out for weeks after the announcement.

It depends on what you're waiting for. I've decided I want/need 32 gb, so I'm not going to buy until the 32 gb is available. I'm not waiting for the ultimate iPhone, just waiting for what I want.

I wonder if there's going to be a rush on iPhones in January? :( Quite a few of us seem to be waiting until after 5 Jan.

Then you're smart to wait, assuming the rumor that there will be a storage update is true (of which I'm not entirely convinced).

there was a rush on iPhones in January. I've been looking for a black 16GB iPhone @ the Best Buys in my area of Southern CA and they're all sold out. I have to wait another week or more!
