Here are some Portrait mode shots from my XR using the $50 Xenvo wide angle/macro lens attachment. Filters are all Apple native filters in the photos app. Pics of my family and of a wax museum here in Nashville.
Thank you!

Really good examples of what the xr is capable of.

My suggestion would be to adjust the amount of “portrait mode” blur to make the pics look a little less “filtered”. Otherwise thanks again!

I upgraded from a 6s over christmas. I love the phone, no regrets whatsoever. I have the 128gb version, 75gb used (my 6s has 16gb). I went to the store, tried the xs and xs max but couldn't really care for the differences. The xr screen is great, and videos look much the same. over 300ppi the eye can't tell the difference. The OLED makes the contrast a bit better but not £300 better. The battery is superb, even with really heavy use (hours of grid autosport, music, videos etc) the battery has never gotten below 60% in a day. It's a massive step up from my 6s and I have no regrets about not taking the xs. My photos are stunning and I don't have a problem taking portrait pictures of non humans, halide means I can take portrait pictures of anything.
For what it's worth, I've found ProCamera app, also $5.99 like the Halide camera app, even better than Halide at taking Portrait Mode shots of non-human subjects. I was a little disappointed with Halide to be honest. YMMV.

I probably have paid for that app also but at the moment halide is my go to. I’ll check it out again.

Also if you’re not using Focos, for me it’s one of the best apps I’ve ever paid for.

XR has the same choppy video playback bug as the XS and the Max. There isn’t a Thread about this here in the Forum.

I really didn’t like the XR at all coming from an 8+, but it wasn’t designed for someone as discerning as me. If I could buy a XS or XS Max without a flickering display I would in a heartbeat, but for now I’ll have to hold out hope that the next-generation OLED models don’t use pulse-width modulation.

No regrets coming from 7+. iPhones don’t have the resale value that it used to so I wouldn’t worry about that.

Discerning, haha. Aren’t you sophisticated.

I’m definitely not as sophisticated, had to double check what “discerning” meant. OP probably only drinks imported water as well. Lol

Must be hard living in this mundane world.

The museum lets you touch the exhibits?

Yep so long as you're respectful. I was surprised they allowed us to do so.

I’m glad you guys are happy with it, just for me the 8+ is still the best option.

Wait, there's apps that let you take portrait pics of non humans on the Xr?

No complaints about the 8+ but me personally eventually got tired of the size after using the 6+ and 7+.

Definitely was annoying in the gym if I had to carry it or hop around with it in my pocket.

The iPhone X hasn’t given me any issues

Yup.

Halide is a pretty popular option but Focos gives you the most portrait mode editing options out of any app.

Getting back to the original post, if you need extra storage I’d just recommend subscribing to a larger iCloud plan and holding onto your X.

I really don’t want to have to worry about apps getting removed or files to be downloaded before I can use them. iCloud doesn’t solve that problem. I really really don’t want to have to worry about how much space I have left on my iPhone or have to Check how much space I have left before I start taking raw photos or record in 4K video.

iCloud doesn’t solve the issue of limited local storage if it did then you’d see people being ok with a 32gb iPhone which there might be but I imagine it’s a small percentage.

Maybe if there was a way to upgrade my X to a higher storage model for a decent price that would be an option but then again for my use case the technology in the XR is better than the X.

In that case, the XR can be a solid option for the right person. It’s not a bad phone by any means; in fact, the 128GB XR is the best value in the current lineup. Just keep in mind you are losing the premium design and the lower-resolution Liquid Retina Display is a downgrade in quality — it depends how much those two factors matter to you.

For my use case a premium design, by Apple standards(I think the iPhone 5 is the best design), is not required. The lower resolution will not prevent me from using my iPhone how I intend on using it.

Also regarding the premium design, my iphones are in cases 99% of the time anyhow.

Thanks!

Will go check them out!!

Are they all pretty much the same? Halide, Focos and ProCamera?

Doesn’t seem to be free versions so don’t want to buy the ‘wrong’ one.

Focos is best used and designed to edit the portrait mode effect of portrait mode pics similar to how you can on the xr/xs/xsmax but like pro mode and you can add lighting and a bunch of other things. Really fakes DSLR level photos the best out of any app I've come across and I've invested in a lot of them. No regrets at all paying the full price fee.

Halide is also a great camera app that also enables portrait mode pics on non humans like focos but focus's more on the picture taking process.

My flow is take pics with halide, edit portrait mode affect in focos and finish in darkroom or lightroom or snapseed depending on how the image will be used.

Can’t lie. I basically just want to be able to take portraits pictures of my dog.

I have iPhone X 64 which I bought on dec 2017. I’m definitely considering going for the new 2019 XR (or whatever it’s gonna be called).

At this time I just wanna be able to resell my iPhone X for some profit this fall and get the XR version just for the cost savings, Don’t wanna spend too much on their high end model.

that’s what I’m planning on right now, and just weighing my options

I came from a iPhone X 64GB to the XR 128gb. My situation is a bit different though. I sold my X to get the one plus 6t and I missed iPhone a month later lol. So instead of paying 1000+ dollars I opted for the XR. I can honestly say I like this phone better then the X. Only thing I miss is the oled screen but not a huge deal to me.

I like my Xr but if I could have kept the Max without getting severe neurological problems I’d have done so. I’ve got the beautiful gold Apple Watch I had bought to match my former Max and it kind of clashes with the cheerful yellow casual look of my Xr. Oh well, as they say...first world problems.

I’m much happier now that the latest iOS update seems to have fixed some issues I was having with not being able to properly select text to copy and paste. I hope other big fixes have eliminated other annoying things I was dealing with. I’ll know in a few days if they don’t show up.

I’ve been content with the hardware but it was the software that had me carrying my Pixel 2 more often.

The XR is a nice device. I do think there is an adjustment period but I like it more now. Not as nice as a XS Max but it’s still perfectly functional and looks vibrant. I might have been more comfortable skipping a generation but I didn’t want to go without an upgrade. Still not sure on keeping it but most users do love it.
