I don't consider that black border around the screen to be thick after I 've got used to that stupid notch so it's a non issue for me.If you can accept the thick bezel, then go for it.

Wouldn’t it only be considered extra spaces if it adds to the advertised screen size?I'm very happy with my XR, coming from a 7 Plus. I've had it for a week and have no complaints. The interface without home button is amazing, especially when switching between apps. The hardware is of a more convenient size being slightly less wide than my Plus and the bezel or notch don't bother me. I see the notch as two small extra spaces of screen for the battery and time instead of a lack of space in the middle. Glass half full.![]()
Do you usually upgrade every year?I have two XRs, one for personal use, one as a work phone.
Cost of the XS/Max seemed excessive, so I opted for these instead. So far zero regrets. Would be nice if portrait worked on inanimate objects/pets, but there are other apps for that anyway. The battery life, lack of burn in worry, and overall size and usability are awesome, in my opinion, and I'd highly recommend the XR.

For what it's worth, I would not upgrade an iPhone 8 Plus to the XR. I almost went from my 7 Plus to the XR back to an 8 Plus, but I decided that wasn't logical as the iPhone 7 Plus to 8 Plus was too incremental. The 8 Plus is still an excellent phone by any standard.I feel terrible about potentially returning the XR as this would be the first time I’ve ever kept an iPhone for more than one generation, but I also am finding it difficult to let go of my 8+. If the XS or XS Max didn’t use pulse-width modulation it would be an easy decision since that would be a definitive upgrade.
Pros for XR:
- New design
- Looks and feels great
- Liquid Retina Display has improved color/contrast that makes colors pop
Pros for 8+:
- Higher resolution display (particularly noticeable in text)
- Looks and feels equally great, also slightly thinner
- 3D Touch works more intuitively and is more functional, though Haptic Touch works fine in Control Center
I use 3D Touch way more often than I thought I did, though I’d actually consider the displays a tie since the XR has ~ 25% improved contrast while the 8+ has a ~ 25% higher resolution. Also, second-gen FaceID is significantly improved over the first-generation version so I also consider that to be a tie with TouchID. For my use I don’t mind the battery life of the 8+.

Totally agree. Which I why I held on to my 7 Plus until last month. I have to be honest, now that I’m used to the XR, and the few things different, I’m loving it. Really great phone. The iPhone 7 to the iPhone 8 was more of a lateral grade, but it did add True tonenand wireless charging, which those are two nice features to have. But to be honest, I think the iPhone 8 really is the most mature device between the 6/6s/7 of them that Apple has offered. Very few problems were reported with the iPhone 8 as well, which Apple seemingly repaired the other devices experienced.
Oh yeah. It really is 95% of the XS experience at 70% of the cost, especially thinking of the XS Max. So I went with the 128GB XR. Loving it.I normally enjoy the incremental upgrades (even S years hold a lot of refinement) but the XR does have minor compromises coming from an 8+. Still, it is a very nice phone that provides 80%-90% of the X experience.
The main if not only feature I’ve been wanting apple to copy from android/pixel is a single lens portrait enabled camera specifically for the folks in the niche market of lens attached mobile photography or moment lens users. I’m glad they “copied” it from the pixel with the XR and in my opinion is an underrated feature on any mobile device.I've been an Android user from the very beginning and owned all three generations of Google Pixel. Having found that the Apple Watch is perfect for my needs I realised that from now on my daily phone needed to be an Apple device. Initially I got an XS Max because of the size but my wife's 8 Plus died so I passed it on to her. When the XR was released I gave it a try and have been very happy. As others have said a super high resolution screen is not a lot of use when the battery is dead and the XR has turned out to have the best battery life of any phone I've ever owned. You can throw everything at it through the day - hotspot, youtube, social media and the rest - and I've only once ended the day with less than 70%. I will miss the camera on the Pixel 3, which makes a ham-fisted amateur occasionally look like a professional, but I'm sure with help and advice from the experts on here I can get close to that level with the XR. Very happy with my purchase.
Ok just got my XR in.
I got to say having it on next to my X the difference in sharpness on such a small screen is wildly overblown. I can see the difference because reading reviews and the spec sheet has prompted me to look for them otherwise it is in no way shape or form in the "blurry" in comparison at least for how I use my phone.
Its blurry in the way that a DVD is blurry compared to a blu ray while both being viewed on a small 1080p flatscreen.
It's not as sharp but it's nothing to complain about and definitely not a dealbreaker when considering all of the updated and upgraded hardware you get.
I would go one step even further. I do notice a lot of the things we talk about here on my iPhones and I was shocked when I first turned on my XR next to my 7 Plus. And the surprises continued when I compared my XR display next to friends X and XS Max. The differences are quite small. So small in fact, without being aware of a difference, you will not notice unless you are watch a movie on your phone with lots of dark scenes. It’s so overhyped.Just as my own input here, I have never heard anyone or come across a discussion outside a ‘tech site’ where others have mentioned the XR display being blurry or inferior. When you come to sites like this, you have to have the expectation that you will have those who will scrutinize everything about the iPhone, and I mean everything. The XR display is perfectly fine for the average consumer who can’t differentiate what resolution even means, let alone 828P versus 1080.

I'm planning on buying the XR. Has anyone experienced stutter/lag issues on XR that seem to be widespread on the Xs/Max?
