same in older systems

I've had this in older SL, and MBP systems. Sometimes, on wake, screen is on, but mouse doesn't work.

Close lid, let it sleep again, open lid, and boom all works.

I think 0 mode is the fastest?

Under Lion, my rBMP was fast enough to light up the screen before I had it in readable position. Now I can wait 2-3 seconds before having it on.

I'm on mode 3 and will try 0 for a while. I'm not a sleep mode guy, I just close the lid when I have to move around in the house, but if my Mac has to stay closed for more than 5 minutes, I'll shut him off.

You can say I have my windows reflexes :p

Mines set to 3, I usually set mine to zero and remove the sleep image file but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I thought this was normal - but maybe not

This happens to me too - I thought it was just the mountain lion/retina/SSD way of saving battery life - which it totally does. The delay seems to be the time it takes to read the saved contents of memory from the HD back into RAM. But reading about hibernate modes, it seems that it should only be doing this for hibernate mode 1 (hibernation). For mode 3 (safe sleep) the default for mac laptops post-2005 (and the setting for mine), it looks like it is supposed to keep RAM powered when the lid is closed (as well as copying the contents to the HD in case of loss of power). Thus with mode 3, the mac is supposed to wake immediately unless battery got so low that it had to truly hibernate.

So why does it seem to go into hibernation anyway when the lid has been closed for a while - even though my hibernate mode is set to 3 (safe sleep) and the battery is near 100%??

standby and standbydelay

OK, It looks like this is normal behavior. Even in safe sleep mode (3), the laptop will still go into hibernation after a while (if "standby" is set) and the length of that while is defined by "standby delay." This explains why it will come back quickly if the lit has been closed for a short while, but not if it has been closed for a long while. You can see the settings for standby, standbydelay, hibernatemode, etc using the "pmset -g" command. A good explanation of standby and standbydelay and how to change them may be found here: http://www.garron.me/mac/macbook-hibernate-sleep-deep-standby.html
