The smart cover protects the screen from impacts and scratches. I don't care so much about the back. A scratch on the screen would be a major annoyance. A scratch on the back would easy to live with. Besides, in a year of use with a naked back my iPad hasn't even gotten a scratch. I think if you're reasonably careful where you put it down, you'll find that the metal is not as delicate as some folks would have you believe. With the smart cover on it the best position for it when not in use is face down.

No. They come off too easily. Mine slipped off once as I was picking up my iPad, and I almost dropped it.

That's why I am also getting the Incipio smart feather - it locks the cover into the case so it can't fall off. Of course, you have to take the iPad out of the case to take it off, but I don't plan on doing that.

Not. Why would you use a cover that only protects the front, and leaves the back naked and vulnerable?

This. I hope they make a Smart Cover that covers the back. The back is bare and what if it gets scratched? Hits an edge of a table or drops?

Also, not to Smart Cover is the best decision. I've read tons and tons of threads here (that you can easily find yourself) that the Smart Cover has scratched their iPad.

I have just bought this same case from Amazon UK (although it is listed under a different manufacturer) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=invision%AE+ipad+2+smart+case+cover&x=0&y=0&sprefix=invision%2Caps%2C298

RRP of £49.95 but they sell for between £13.95 & £19.95.

It fits the iPad 2 perfectly (I was worried about it falling out, but it is a very good fit) and I am fairly sure the new iPad will be okay too (I've tried padding the iPad 2 out at the back a little to make it a bit thicker & it is fine).

In fact, I am so impressed with the red one I ordered that I have now also ordered the black, grey & dusty pink ones as well

Did you get any scratches from the Smart Cover case? I really want to get that one for my future iPad 3 but I would HATE if I got scratches because of it. It's kind of notorious for giving scratches too.

Nope, it is very soft on the inside but with a strong skeleton (if that's the right way of describing it).

It is early days so I can't comment on the long term use of this case, but first impressions (and for the price!) are very good indeed, hence the additional purchases.

What I didn't want was a case that looked cheap on my £569 iPad and this case doesn't (in fact, I prefer it to my husbands official Apple leather Smart Cover which was 4 times the price!).

There are a couple of review on Amazon saying that the fit wasn't very good but my experience is not the same. It clips in and holds very well (I can open the case & shake it (over a soft landing!) and there is no way it will fall out.

Very happy :)

I've always used a Smart Cover on my iPad 2 from the beginning. Initially I was using the black leather Apple one. Then I switched to the one below in the link from Grove in Oregon which is handmade and can have a custom design if you so wish. It is more expensive but it looks much nicer and isn't nowhere near as common. I've had a lot of people including staff in the Apple stores making positive comments on it. I'll most likely keep using it with the new iPad. I've also got a clear hard case on the back made by Switch Easy called the CoverBuddy shown in the second link. I think that's the best combination in my opinion.

Thanks so much for posting this, it looks to be just what I am looking for! Have ordered one in Hot Pink! xx

I used a Smartcover plus a BeskSkinsEver skin for the back on my iPad2. Worked great, no scratches from the smartcover or anything else. I plan to do the same thing again with my ipad 3rd gen.

With this last iPad, I put a protective skin on the back and have a smart cover on the front. It's worked out perfectly. I don't have to worry about scratching the soft aluminium back and the front is protected. I'm doing the same thing with the new one.

It's not notorious for doing that at all. There are a few people on these forums who claim they scratched their iPad, but I honestly have no idea how the managed it. I have many friends with smart covers and none of them have any issues. You would really have to be very careless to manage it or some kind of freak situation with have to happen. Like maybe setting it with the cover pulled back on the sand at the beach or on a pile of metal shavings and then close it and rub it back and forth.

If you use common sense and make sure you don't close it with junk of the inside of the cover, you will never have a problem.

No..even though the leather smart cover is nice, for $70 I don't think it's worth it not to protect the back . I was going to opt for the Mareware Hard shell case or Incipio feather to go along with the smart cover but why purchase 2 cases when you can have 1 for cheaper that offers 100% protection. Plus when I ordered the RED smartcover and tried to find a compatible back cover, all the other RED hard shell back cases are backordered until April. I'm getting ready to take a 24 hour plane ride so I need it before then. Looking forward to my Incipio Lexington.

Since this is my first, I don't want to take any chances, especially when I know other young hands will be handling it..(at my discretion of course)..:D:D

The main advantage is that the smart cover is removable. While I'm out and about I just swing it back, but when I'm laying in bed I just pull it off all together.

yes but...

only if you get back protection either with a skin like Zagg or Bodyguardz or a back compliment like the one from iSkin

I Smart Cover my baby wherever I go!:D

Although I have yet to get my iPad 3, so the Smart Cover will have to wait.

I use a hard shell for the back that is compatible with the smart cover. I use the Belkin for my iPad 2 and just bought the Marware micro shell for the new iPad.

Is Marware shell specially made for the new iPad? I wonder if iPad 2 shells will fit the new one.

They're very flexible. Even I'd you don't go with the official apple ones they're a must own acessorie.

I bought one with my iPad 2 and never used it. My husband took it and likes it. I kept taking it off. So I went with a Power Support anti-glare screen protector (I like the anti-glare and anti-fingerprint properties) andan iCarbon skin.

This time I'm using the same screen protector and a Zagg Leatherskin. I use a sleeve for transport. I really like not having too much bulk while I'm holding my iPad.
