Do you use TRIM Enabler for your SSD?

You realize enabling TRIM on a new drive is when you want to enable it, not when you've used it a while. That way the OS can communicate to the drive on what blocks were deleted. You only wan to erase free space when you enable trim on a used SSD.

I have a new intel 120gb and enabled it just for that reason.

Sorry, I must have mis-read it. Yes, I enabled TRIM as soon as I could after restoring it from backup. No, did not run those commands cause I didn't erase the free space. According to the TRIM Enabler thread, running those commands again is only necessary if you decide to erase the free space to teach the OS where they are.

I don't think it really matters.... because I ran it without freeing space and its fine.

I think TRIM only tells the SSD which blocks are unused so that the drive's own garbage collection can handle them later, if necessary! It saves the SSD to look for unused (aka "invalid") pages by itself, which in turn saves time.

So my understanding is that TRIM does *not* force the drive to do its garbage collection at once. That would not even make sense, because as long as there is enough free space (deleted flash blocks) available there is no need for copying data around (and thus increase wear).

my xbench results after a few days after enabling.

seems to be working!

is Trim necessary for a Samsung 470? I just installed mine but I'm blowing everything up for a clean Lion install when it's released. Would I still need to do a trim hack or will lion work with it?

i don't know much abt the sammy470, but from my understanding Lion will support TRIM natively on Apple's SSDs. however, not third party SSDs... :(

let's wait a few days until it's released! i hope i am wrong!
