I’m not sure how straight forward the installation of 10.5 would be. You would likely need XPostFacto plus a modified kernel - @LightBulbFun is the man to consult with. I believe he has had success with Leopard on G4 upgraded Beige G3 systems, which I understand run a similar period system design to the PDQ.

I’ve tested the modified ATIRagePro.kext driver on my G3 233mhz PDQ. The driver makes OS X much more enjoyable to use (responsiveness is vastly improved). So, not G4 specific, but rather PDQ-specific.

The easiest route for a functional [more capable] OS X system will be to install Tiger directly onto the drive using a different Mac. I used a pre-installed copy of Tiger 10.4.6 from my Pismo, then used Disk Utility on a G5 to restore the installation directly onto the PDQ’s drive. I then copied XPostFacto 4 onto the drive, reinstalled it into the PDQ and booted from a Mac OS 9.0.4 retail CD. I was then able to install OS9 and run XPostFacto to install the special drivers the PDQ need to boot into Mac OS X 10.4. The software updater then ran as normal to bring it up to 10.4.11 and install the rest of the updates.

Given that you’re running off a CF card, it should be easy to hook it up to a different machine to setup the OSes.
