What is surprising is that there are nearly as many California location naming scheme releases as there were the big cat releases. It doesn’t feel like they switched that long ago.
Well, there are 9 cats and 7 Cali locations, but those 9 cats spanned > 11 years, and the locations only 7 so far, because releases have become more frequent.

(Edit) 8. I counted 10.9 through 11.x incorrectly.

I haven't tried a new version since High Sierra because none of my Mac's can run past 10.13. I don't know what i'm missing out these days. Now with M1 chip Mac's and Big Sur changing the look, it's probably a new world coming from those old OSX versions. ?‍♂️

Before 10.9 you could set it that double clicking on a folder in an open window would open a new window on top. Now you have to hold a key, command I think.
I'm fairly certain this works exactly as it did in 10.9 and much futher back. This 2003 article talks about the change: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2003/04/finder/
Before tabs were introduced in finder you had to press cmd to get a new window. You can still set that as the default in Finder preferences.

You can get the much older behaviour where it opens a new window always if you hide the toolbar (just as in 10.9). Cmd-option-T.
Folders remember their toolbar setting, but if you "browse" from a higher folder, they will forget it. Hiding it in your home folder or wherever you normally start browsing from (New Finder Window), it will stick around.

SPARCstation 20? It’s been so long since I’ve had to deal with Solaris. Loved that hardware as well. Costly, but nice.
I typed in "Sun Computer" in google photos, and it freaking found it. Back in 2002 I managed to install KDE on one and was so stoked a took a picture. I don't remember the DE they ran stock, but it was awful.

Looks like they were "Ultra 10" machines?

Yeah, makes sense given the changeover to California locations was 8 years ago, and 10.6/older were released every two years, while 10.7/newer annually, so it makes sense that the numbers has caught up.
