This is nothing really. Tim Cook had done so much more and the Pro products we have is astonishing. Software is so much better too, why we need Aperture when we can have Photos. Hardware wise newbys are using Pro products nowadays. Soon we are going to have an iPhone Pro. I'm excited for this!

Steve Jobs was the visionary. The Apple Store idea is so successful that Microsoft copies it.

"some critics believed that Apple retail stores would be a resounding failure....." I am interested to hear what those critics said later on.

It's times like this you realize how much Apple did in 2001-2011 and how little Apple has done over the past 5 years.

Right. They have quadrupled revenue since 2011. What a failure.

While some critics believed that Apple retail stores would be a resounding failure, especially given the dot-com collapse, the concept proved to be highly profitable and successful.

Of course, this just shows some things are remarkably consistent.

Not my responsibility to figure it out. I didn't accept the job. I don't make millions to do that line of work.

We could start with fixing the operating systems; re-designing them to look less ridiculous, firing Phil Schiller, firing Eddy Cue, bumping the base storage to 32 GB, giving investors a reason to see innovation is still possible within the company, and taking risks on technology by releasing something that might not be quite ready for prime time yet.
Agree with Eddy Cue, not so much on Phil - the guy is just marketing and knows damn well how to sell the masses a 16GB phone. Agree on the 32GB base storage and agree that the Apple Watch might not been ready for prime time, but neither was the iPad 1 lacking cameras and more RAM thus leaving it obsolete just two years after it was released.

Nice reply, sir.

I'll always remember around 2001/02 when I stumbled upon a PC message board rife with flippant anti-Apple remarks, where posters had photoshopped several photos of Apple retail stores with DeLL or HP logos.

Of course at the time no one knew how big Apple would become, but it is satisfying how much crow critics had eaten to this point.

Yeah! Now people come to the Apple focused message board and incessantly make anti-Apple remarks. Times really have changed!

You mean like the new MacPro, the apple watch, 4k and 5k iMacs, retina phones, Retina MacBook Pros, and the incredibly thin Retina Macbook

Edit: Removed the iPad and crossed out the iPhone, as I was incorrect on the timing

Everyone always leaves out the chips. That is one of the most impressive things Apple has done. To have the best mobile chip is a huge advantage. Especially when you consider that a mobile CPU is probably the most important thing as software continues to take over markets. They didn't start this process in the last five years, but the improvements, especially in the last two years has been amazing.

Yep, there's been a load of great innovation in that field. Honestly if Apple just updated their products more often and went pure SSD in their entire computer line, a lot of people's gripes would be gone. There's not really much they need to do, so I think this Apple hate is somewhat overblown, albeit justified in a few instances.

To be fair, that first window is twice as big as the second one.

But yeah. Apple has dramatically decelerated. Just look at 2007-2010 and compare it to 2011-2016.

In the first window they released the iPhone, Apple TV, and iPad.
In the second window they released the Apple Watch.

You're cherry picking dates a bit there.

In January 2007, they introduced the iPhone and shipped the Apple TV. Then they did nothing for 3 years. Imagine. Two products per month in that first window, then a drastic deceleration to 0 products per month in the second.

The truth is, nothing compares to the iPhone, neither before nor after. That's a single point in time and every timespan that includes 2007 will outshine any that doesn't. There is no speed, no acceleration or deceleration, just one huge one-time jump.

Enough of this. It seems that every article is just a springboard for Apple hate.

Believe it or not, Apple engineers and many others (heck, maybe even Tim Cook from time to time) browse MR. MR themselves can confirm this, with traffic coming directly from Cupertino, and showing as being from newer or unreleased OS X/iOS builds.

And yet at every single tenuous opportunity, all they'll see is rubbish like this where it's not called for. Ironically enough, the actual valid criticisms for how Apple can genuinely improve will be completely lost. They'll shrug their shoulders and think "well, you guys will never be happy no matter what we do."

You are right, and I think this is why Apple has moved their primary focus to regular consumers. These are people that can be pleased. The people on this board, overall, are never going to be satisfied with whatever Apple puts out. People are gushing over the stuff from Google IO yesterday, but if Apple had put out the same stuff they would be sneering and talk about how Apple doesn't know how to innovate anymore.

It's sad how the people you responded to and many others take things for granted and have such rose tinted glasses. It was probably the same ones complaining about how bad Apple was for not having 3rd party apps or 3G on the OG iPhone. Or no Cut/Copy/Paste etc. Or how the iPad is just a blown up iPad and offered nothing new. I guess it'll never change, I remember the same negativity when the iPod came out, people claiming Apple had lost all hope and were doomed.

To add to (and duplicate some of) your list some things they've released since 2011 that have been positive for me:

- TouchID - not much to say except awesome.
- A new line of iPads in 2 sizes with the addition of a highly regarded stylus. This product has made the biggest change to my working life in the last 5 years and probably ever (completely ditched paper - all notes now taken digitally).
- New True Tone display on iPad Pro 9.7" - massive difference when using iPad outdoors (hope this tech filters to other iOS devices).
- Starting with the A7 moved A-series chip design in-house and transitioned to to 64-bit for their iOS devices. The latest releases the A9 and A9X which have been excellent in performance terms.
- iPhone with 3D Touch - something else which has made working life quicker (can get through dozens of emails in a much smaller amount of time).
- Research Kit: fingers crossed this leads to some good.
- A completely new MacBook line (Retina 2015), introduces several firsts for Apple - USB-C, new Butterfly mechanism keyboard, fanless, custom shaped battery, individual LED backlit keys (as opposed to an array previously), Force Touch trackpad.
- The 2105 MacBook (Retina) has also just received an internal upgrade with some decent performance boosts.
- A mapping service.
- A new Apple TV with a much requested App Store.
- A new programming language: Swift.
- Roll-out of Apple Pay.
- In the last year or so released 2 operating system updates (OS X 10.11, iOS 9) and 2 new Operating systems (watchOS and tvOS) - which have been pretty rock solid for me.
- Apple Watch which has made a big difference to my fitness (no more phone carried when on runs, easy logging of sets and reps, ability to buy drinks whilst running/cycling without cash etc.).

Plenty of innovation there. Apple are not perfect, never were and never will be. But they have one very happy customer here with a lot of their recent products providing nice incentives to upgrade over older alternatives.

Yeah but it's in an annoying way. I'd rather have someone who talks less out of his butt all the time, and actually follows through with what he's saying so the consumer actually experiences what he's talking about.

Yeah, and guess what, they will see what every other person who works a job gets to deal with every day. Boo hoo. This is not a cheerleader forum, if you want that .. go somewhere else I guess.

You know what people actually want? Apple to stop rushing out garbage like Maps and Apple Music with their countless bugs. People would like to have the option to set a default app other than the one Apple says is the best. They do A LOT of things well, iMessage is fantastic as is Facetime, Mobile SoCs are great, but there is A LOT where they can also improve as well.

Nostalgia is a powerful drug. There's a reason why people always think fondly of the past and rarely the present.

I'm not saying Apple is as good under Tim, but to say they've done little in 5 years is just flat out wrong. What they've released may not be as transformative as iPod and iPhone (yet), but they've done plenty in 5 years...

ATV4, Apple Watch, Mac Pro, MacBook, 64-bit mobile CPU, Swift, iPad Pro w/ Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, Apple Pay, CarPlay, complete iOS makeover, and some foundational technologies such as HomeKit and HealthKit that could be the basis for a transformative experience down the road... just to name a few.

Give them another 5 years and then let's compare... We will likely get VR/AR and a car and who knows what else.

You're comparing 10 years to 5 years? What about 2001-2006 vs 2011-2016?

There have been some major and influential products/services in the last 5 years: MacBook Air (ultrabooks and well-designed laptops running Windows exist because of the Air), iCloud, iPad 2 [this is where iPads and competing tablets started to take off], "Retina" displays in laptops [Apple was the first to successfully push high PPI displays in laptops] and phones [Apple wasn't the first but all other manufacturers had to do it once Apple started to], Apple Watch [some people don't "get" it but there's a huge future for smartwatches for many reasons], etc.

That's way bigger than 2001-2006 (and not just because Apple's a bigger company).

Edit: Karma*Police listed some 2011-2016 things I didn't that are also (some even more) important.
