"Greyhound," a WWII battleship drama written by and starring Tom Hanks, is set to premiere on Apple's streaming television service Apple TV+, reports Deadline.

The movie was originally meant to be released in theaters on Father's Day by Sony Pictures, and will mark the biggest film release on Apple TV+ to date. There was a major bidding battle between streamers for the rights to the film, and Apple may have paid close to $70 million.

Apple has not yet set a release date for the film, but Deadline says that it could be coming soon. It will be the first time a major Tom Hanks movie has been released on a streaming service rather than in theaters, and the Apple TV+ release is due to the ongoing global health crisis and its impact on theatrical release calendars.

Many movie theaters in the United States remain closed at this time, which has caused film studios to push back many release dates.

In "Greyhound," Hanks plays George Krause, a career officer given command of a Navy destroyer Greyhound during the Battle of the Atlantic. Krause fights his own self doubts and personal demons along with the enemy to prove that he belongs in command.

Apple TV+ has few films at the current time, offering up "The Banker," "Hala," and "The Elephant Queen," but there are additional movies on the horizon, including "On the Rocks" starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.

Update: According to CNBC, Apple paid Sony $70 million for 15 years of streaming rights to the film. Sony retains the right to distribute the movie in China, where it could see a theatrical release. The deal was approved by Hanks, as this is the first time that one of his movies has gone straight to streaming.

this is huge!! I love Tom Hanks and I love War movies!! I bet this is what those earlier reports were about - that Apple is looking into buying the rights to standalone movies and shows, it could mean upcoming shows from third party studios and indies.

I can’t wait! I bet this releases on Father’s day with the Dads doc. Tom is America’s Dad (in our hearts) after all.

Unless Apple buys MGM there’s no way thats happening. Bond is a Billion dollar movie and needs to show in theaters internationally.
Even if they somehow made a deal with MGM, I'd still wait to see Bond 25 in a theatre, despite watching other films and series at home. Some movies deserve the big theater experience, even if you have to wait.

Jeez, not even in theaters and the film company’s already made their budget back.

Road to Perdition was a masterpiece.

Excellent, yes, both fantastic. We've had a blast going back through his catalog - of course, we also had a rewatch of The Green Mile ... NO I'M NOT CRYING I HAVE SOMETHING IN MY EYE ... *ahem*

We haven't seen A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood yet, looking forward to it though, I grew up with Mr. Rodgers, and my wife, _literally_ did, lived right down in the road from him outside of Pittsburgh :)

I wonder when it will be broadcast. I know it originally said Father's Day weekend, but will that date be the same for the streaming possibility?

CUT TO:

EXT. NIGHT. UNNAMED CITY. We see TOM HANKS. He is dressed in SENSIBLE but STILL STYLISH AND AGE APPROPRIATE SLACKS. He is looking pensively into the MIDDLE DISTANCE, as he ponders how to MANAGE HIS WEALTH. Suddenly, the sky LIGHTS UP with the TOM HANKS MOVIE CASTING SIGNAL.

TOM HANKS:
Holy plain vanilla! Someone needs an older white guy for a movie! Time to jump into action......

(Buh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh TOM HAAAAANKS
Buh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh TOM HAAAAANKS)

The end.

Gave you a 'love' reaction for this, because it's amusing. Hoping it was written with affection for the great Mr Hanks?

Hope this is the start of a new trend and seeing more first run movie opportunities coming, both via the subcription services and rentals. No better way to start than with a Tom Hanks movie :)
The cost of buying rights to first run movies can’t be sustainable @$5 per month. Even the in-house productions aren’t longterm. I wonder what the next step is for Apple+ business plan to be profitable. Course once the money runs through the Apple tax möbius cave, who knows.

I think a lot more movies will go direct to streaming. Movie theaters are dead. But will those movies be available for purchase or will they only be available on the streaming service they debuted on? Will this movie be available on iTunes or only Apple TV+?

Sorry dudes but I can’t join y’all on the hype train for this one. He actually comes across as quite annoying to me in the trailer. Kinda has me routing for the Nazis!

Incidentally, don’t you just love the phrase “inspired by actual events”? They should put that on everything! Every episode of Rick & Marty should start with “inspired by actual events”.
