You're operating under the assumption that Apple's business model isn't slowly changing. I'd argue that hardware is slowly shifting as a vehicle to sell services. Thus the lower price points Apple's willing to touch with the iPad, iPhone SE, MacBook Air, etc.
Yes, indeed. Apple is becoming a services-centric and ecosystem company. No question about it. The idea is to have you completely surrounded by Apple products and Apple services. Apple Glass and Apple Watch are the ultimate form of surrounding-tech, by getting it on your body too.

Apple Glass
Apple Watch
Apple AirPods/AirStudios

That really is the trifecta for wearables. You leave your house with these 3 items and you can really have everything you need.

I don’t know one person IRL who has Apple TV. This doesn’t excite me at all.

Don’t get me wrong, the service isn’t worth half of what they’re charging for it, but so many people are getting it for free because of recent purchases (my wife for example), so I figure why not enjoy it while it’s free?

PS. You have the best username I’ve ever seen!

too bad everyone including the media forgot about TV+ so I am not sure how many people will actually be aware of this movie haha

also how many freaking movies can they make about WW2 and Nazis? It’s getting boring.

i would actually like to see a movie about the British basically wiping out the native Americans or the Spanish in South America. Even a movie about the Ottoman Empire moving into Europe would be awesome

PVOD is a touchy subject with theater chains (AMC theaters vs Comcast NBCUniversal). This COVID 19 times is a give take with a lot of content normally going theaters->VoD->media. Studios still derive most money from theaters, even the trolls PVOD example didn’t make that money compared to what it would done in the theaters. Even this greyhound deal, is it going to change people’s perceptions? :)

I personally would stop going cinema lol I much prefer watching movies at home where I can pause and rewind if I missed something.

Saw the trailer for this a while ago. Looks to be as accurate as U571. Just watch the Cruel Sea or Das Boot instead...

Sorry dudes but I can’t join y’all on the hype train for this one. He actually comes across as quite annoying to me in the trailer. Kinda has me routing for the Nazis!

Incidentally, don’t you just love the phrase “inspired by actual events”? They should put that on everything! Every episode of Rick & Marty should start with “inspired by actual events”.
I like Hanks but do think he sometimes comes off as a little faux-humble self-riteous. Maybe it’s the writing he chooses/creates, but it came through in a couple of interviews as well. But whatevs. He’s a good entertainer. It’s always Tom Hanks playing Tom Hanks playing someone, and I’m okay with that. The movies though (Green Mile, Private Ryan, Apollo 13, etc. etc.) are fantastic no matter who you’re rooting for.

I’m actually posting because I always think the exact same thing about “Inspired by actual events.” Everything is inspired by actual events. It’s just a way to get the gullible to think the story itself happened. Or do they not know there was a large war 75 years ago with boats & subamarines?

I don't know why studios are resisting the direct to streaming option. Theaters are dead. Even when things open fully, movie theaters will struggle to reach pre-pandemic numbers. These movies sitting on the shelf now will sit there and not make a dime, only to get released to sub-par numbers in theaters? It doesn't make sense.

Just thought of a probably less known Tom Hanks movie that I loved - Ladykillers. It's the only one I can think of that
Tom Hanks plays a villain. Are there others?

While PVOD of Trolls made $95 million in 19 days, comparably the following is from BoxOfficePro

“From a revenue standpoint, the PVOD launch of Trolls World Tour represents a decline of more than 21 percent from the $120.86 million earned by its predecessor in the first 19 days of its domestic theatrical release. Ultimately, Trollsbanked $153.7 million domestically and an additional $193.2 million internationally for a global box office total of $346.9 million.”

So using the previous example how does a PVOD compare to normal theater release, it just doesn’t make anywhere as much. So if streaming pundits want to proclaim theaters as dead, you might as well remember all the negative revenue flow of most streaming hosts, be it Apple TV+, Disney+, or Netflix. The sheer amount of subscribers even for Netflix doesn’t make up the cost of acquiring content (buying or licensing) either. The same applies to TV+.

BTW just for fun look at Drive in’s during the pandemic, they are showing that people still like going to the movies for the social interaction then watching streaming at home. Are you shocked? 😄

Here’s a different perspective on this topic against Worldwide distribution rights question.

“I think that deal is only for the US. IMDB still lists Sony Pictures as theatrical distributor for different countries including Germany, The Netherlands and Canada.”

Production Companies
Columbia Pictures
Stage 6 Films
Zhengfu Pictures
BRON Studios (as 'Bron Creative')
Creative Artists Agency (CAA)
Creative Wealth Media Finance
FilmNation Entertainment
Playtone
Sycamore Pictures (financing)
Distributors
Apple TV+ (2020) (USA) (all media)
China Film Group Corporation (CFGC) (2020) (China) (theatrical)
Sony Pictures Releasing (2020) (Argentina) (theatrical) (through United International Pictures)
Sony Pictures Releasing (2020) (Canada) (theatrical)
Sony Pictures Releasing (2020) (Germany) (theatrical)
Sony Pictures Releasing (2020) (Netherlands) (theatrical) (through Universal Pictures International)
United International Pictures (UIP) (2020) (Argentina) (theatrical) (through)
Universal Pictures International (UPI) (2020) (Netherlands) (theatrical) (through)

While I will watch it, I cannot believe anyone would pay $70,000,000 for a movie they are giving away.

Netflix paid over $150 million for The Irishman

I think a lot more movies will go direct to streaming. Movie theaters are dead. But will those movies be available for purchase or will they only be available on the streaming service they debuted on? Will this movie be available on iTunes or only Apple TV+?

You're so wrong. Movie studios aren't making billions of dollars from selling their movies to streaming services. You think the latest Marvel movie is going to make a billion from Netflix or Amazon? Avengers endgame passed $2 billion.
