Tomtom has completely embarrassed themselves with the debacle that is their iPhone app. They kept their potential customers in the dark about pricing and release times. As of today they have not released a single update to their app and the reviews now are going downhill. Tomtom promises "several" updates by the end of the year even though we are in October. They expect us to pay $220 for the app and the car kit and do it with glee. No wonder Tomtom is currently ranked #27 in the top grossing apps and Navigon is #2 (and $10 cheaper). Tomtom has destroyed their reputation with me and I will never buy one of their products again.

But I'm not bitter

Car Kit for the iPod Touch

What you think about that.

TomTom said at the beginning, that the car kit would work whit the ipod Touch. Now, it works only wiht the iPhone.

Planned Apple to put GPS, Compass and the Camera on the ipod Touch? And in the last second rejected all?

Folks,
It's fine if you don't want this thing, and yes of course buyers should consider other options. But here's why some folks might be interested:
1) the aGPS on the iphone is not as reliable as it could be, with the result that ANY gps software on it can get erratic at times, leading to odd behavior, wrong routes, etc. So an exterior gps that provides more rock-solid performance could be worth a good deal. I want a gps that just works, not the one with longest feature list or prettiest screen.
2) A stand-alone gps that provides mp3 playing, hands-free calling, and services like weather can't be had for much less than $250; the iphone/car kit combo comes in at about the same price, along with all the other iphone goodness.
3) The design of this looks elegant: just a one-handed insertion and away you go. No gps pucks or bluetooth gadgets requiring recharges to worry about. To some of us, that simplicity is worth something.

Not only is the price to high this is a dumb product.

For around the same cost you can get a dedicated GPS. That will still give you directions if your phone rings or you make a call, you get or send a text/email.

This product and price just make no sense.

Weak argument. You're forgetting that Apple is providing mist if the hardware for this product. The chipsets, the LCD, the battery, thr MP3 player, the phone, etc. You're trying to compare a $250 solution to a $220 solution that requires an additional purchase to even function at all: an iPhone.

To all- I purchased motionx gps drive for $3 and it rocks. Yes, you need a cell signal at least to cache map data. And the voice/3d mode does cost $3 a month, but you can purchase it at will. No subscriptions, no recurring charges. And so far it works like a cheap $100 standalone. Truly awesome. Y'all enjoy your subscriptions and expensive Tom toms. I'll stick with practically free.

4-5 months later...

Just ordered 2 windshield mounts from Amazon after waiting to see what TomTom was gonna do with this but they are obviously are out to get every penny there is no way I gonna spend $200 on a mount and app...I might have bought both for a $100 but even that is a bit high

Motion x works great sitting on the cupholder. I'm thinking of investing in a piece of tape or possibly Velcro though.

I can't believe how long this has taken to be released.

The way Tomtom have gone about the iPhone is a complete sham. Strangely enough, in the UK iTunes store (both versions) rank higher than Navigon.

I will get one to try out but i think it's overpriced.

Riiiight....

I don't really understand TomTom's pricing logic other than they're specifically targeting the stupid.

TomTom iPhone Mount - £99.95
TomTom UK & Ireland iPhone App - £59.99
TomTom Western Europe iPhone App - £79.99

So £159.94 for UK & Ireland or £179.94 for Western Europe.

Why would anyone in their right mind pay that when they can buy:

TomTom XL IQ Routes Edition UK & Ireland - £154.47
TomTom XL IQ Routes - Europe - £174.17

So if you pay less then you can get a dedicated GPS device which doesn't cease to work when you receive phone calls. The Europe model also covers the whole of Europe, not just Western Europe.

Seriously. Who are TomTom kidding?? You'd have to be a fool to buy the mount and app instead of a dedicated device.

Compatibility?

No way I would buy the Tom Tom app for $100. It gets terrible reviews and is WAY overpriced. Motion X for $3 works just fine, thank you very much. Does anyone know if other GPS programs will function with this dock, i.e. work with Navigon or Motion X? I realize this probably is protected by Tom Tom, but you never know.

I bought it before you even replied. This will be on both of our phones(wife)will the $3 voice work on both foe the one month charge??? we use the same iTunes account.

Edit: If anyone knows, that would be great.

Way too expensive

Nope, just not worth it. $220.00 for some software and an iPhone cradle, come on, that's just ridiculous. I could go buy almost three cheap TomToms for that price and get the devices along with it. I'm sorry TomTom, did you forget that YOU'RE NOT SELLING THE HARDWARE (except for this overpriced mount)!

120$ for a mount with GPS? and you still need to attach a cable to your aux in on your vehicle. HAHA. I dont need that extra GPS; I'll just buy the Griffin for 25$ on the Apple Store.

I feel really stupid

I bought this TomTom app for US & Canada and now I feel really stupid, the thing doesn't work properly, it rarely follows what I do and has a really hard time getting a GPS signal under my windshield. I miss my Garmin Nuvi 770... Love Garmin, HATE tomtom...
Now I paid a lot of money for the app and it's kinda useless right now, I will probably be tempted to buy the mount just to try and see if it helps (yeah I don't listen to others, I try things for myself), although I have a big feeling I'll be even more ripped off for no improvements at all... yeah thanks tomtom for doing such a poor job on an app for the best cell phone ever...
Wonder what the Apple people think of this, it kinda messes up the iPhone's credibility (you know when they say it just works) and in their place, I'd have tested the tomtom app and banned it from the app store for not working properly. :apple:

whine whine whine

I for one cant wait to get my hands on this. You guys should get some cheese instead.

Guys relax.

The market will decide. Just look at those Yankee tickets. When people don't buy the unit, TomTom will get the hint.

Then they will offer the software with the adapter for the same price.

Just wait.

It works fine for me; certainly as well as Navigon did.

Some people report that placement of the iphone makes a difference in reception, or taking it out of the case, or using a different mount. I haven't found a difference in reception in my car, as long as it's an inch or two from a window. (If I hold it in my hand in the middle of the car, it doesn't work.)

Trees, buildings, and odd weather have thrown mine off occasionally as well. (Sometimes I just don't know why it works or not.)

Point it, though, people are having wildly different experiences mostly because of the weakness of the iPhone's aGPS, I think. Hence the interest in the TomTom mount. (If Apple allowed an external bluetooth gps puck, as winmobile phones do, I'd just use one of those. The best of them have great reception.)

That is why I will probably purchase the mount anyway, because I don't have one right now and trust other manufacturers even less, however if the mount resolves all the problems I had with tomtom, then and only then it'll be worth it.
I am ready to pay a lot of money for things that work properly tomtom has yet to convince me I've made the right decision...

Of course people would buy this for their iPod touches - make sense, right? - but if it doesn't work with it, the hell with this useless and overly expensive mount.

That's exactly why EVERYbody wants this. But the price is utterly ridiculous, obviously changing the minds of all the sane bodies.

An actual gps is a much better buy, and plenty of them with excellent features are under $200 these days. It's not 2007 anymore.
