Except you're paying for the licence, not the hardware in this case.

Anyone who thinks that Tom Tom will sell their product for £20-30 or imagines that they'll put a bargain basement price on it because Apple have several million customers is kidding themselves.

You can buy the complete TomTom system for under £90 as i stated above with licence included!

The licence is only worth around £30

WHAT!?!!? There was no way I was expecting that. I was thinking more like $20 tops! Is that an insane thought?

Call me crazy but I do think they'd lower the price for the iphone 3g due to the large user base.

Yes. That is an insane thought because of the amount of insane development time that goes into building such a product. I would have no problem paying $100 - $200 for an app like that. Asking for no more than $20 is a slap in the face to the developers.

The TOMTOM software is measured in Gigabytes, Apps available right now are measured in kilobytes/megabytes.

It really isn't: my TomTomOne (UK edition) has 512 MB total memory: the UK and Republic of Ireland map is only 116MB. That leaves the rest of the memory for the TomTom operating software and a load of extra voices that came on it when I bought it and as I recall there is still quite a lot of free space. The complete map of Europe is 861MB, which obviously will not fit on my UK edition TomTomOne, but this will not be a problem on my 16GB iPhone!

I would rather buy a dedicated GPS than some software for $200. A slap in the face. So I guess there is a lot of slapping going on since a lot of phones come with built in turn by turn.

Ok,
So its £66 for the TomTom on a memory card with licence and packaging.

So how much do you think the iPhone version would be as a digital download through iTunes?

Remember, there are no costs for a memory card, packaging and any other things for the digital download version.

Dream on, I'd be very VERY surprised if it was under £50 and none of the one series has BT??

Why did my ONE series connect to my phone by bluetooth then?

for traffic updates / weather, the one series is the basic model - are you sure its the one series? only the top end tomtoms have BT dialling???

True that some phones come with it built in, but you have to pay a monthly fee for it to work. I for one see plenty of value at a $100 price point. I would also love to see either telenav or tomtom use features that bring out the uniqueness of the iphone. Garmin is really on to something with their upcoming nuvi phone

£66. Actually probably more.

The slap in the face comment comes regarding the amount of free and 0.99 cent apps on the App Store. Let's call them the youngin's, that see the majority of apps being at that cost will then demand the same prices for other apps without any rational justification. If I developed an app and charged a price and had a couple youngin reviews saying it's too expensive or should be free, my response would be piss off. They (or their parents) can pay the amount of cash for the iPhone but crying over software prices is ridiculous. I'll charge what I think is reasonable. That was the point behind slapping developers in the face.

Call me crazy...but, normally when using gps...someone is in a car or somewhere where there is a power source (aside from camping).

So what if someone manufactured a "cradle" for the iphone...where the maps, voices and other options were integrated into...and this "cradle" utilized the iphones screen and gps functions.

This would be a great feature...especially if it was charging the phone as you used the gps. :p

I would certainly buy into it.

Edit: I suppose, there could even be a portable option for the cradle as well.

I mean...most gps units need a good view of the satellite anyway...so why not have a cradle that suction-cups to your windshield, that charges it too.

*i wish* :p
