But some people do prefer the smaller size of the mini and I don't see why everyone is making a big deal of it and saying the people who want the mini are just trying to convince themselves.

It really is a bizarre statement to make. I can see someone trying to justify something they have already bought but something they are wanting to buy? These tablets aren't exactly cheap. No one is going to buy a $400+ device if they actually have to convince themselves it's something they truly want. To suggest otherwise is beyond stupid.
 
As I said in another post people like the thinness now but still want to buy a 7" tablet I'm bored reading posts by ipad mini users who get tempted by the smaller tablet but know the full size ipad is always going to be larger.

They could make it paper thin and it would still have a larger display.
