You know that Monsters of Rock ended 2006? And that it mostly played rock not metal. For metal Wacken Open Air is the place to go...

Dude, just stop. You are either too young or you have no idea what you are talking about. It is true that Europe had a huge play in the origin of metal, in particular Scandinavia but saying that Iced Earth is the only true American metal band is stupid. You never heard of METALLICA, arguably the biggest metal band in the world? What about Slayer? Pantera? Testament? These are world pioneers of thrash metal. And they are all American. And yes, they do “sound metal”.

And TOOL is a great band. Not really “metal” but nonetheless amazing.

God I love you @D.T. You picked up my obscure Office Space reference. :D

Office Space is burned into my subconscious (have [or did] it on DVD, BD and even iTunes so i can just fire it up right from my desk) :D I have a little wireless laser behind my desk, and it goes off from people printing around the house, and I have yet to turn around and not think, "PC LOAD LETTER? WTF does that mean?!?"

If we're discussing metal, we shouldn't forget The Metal ...

I'm not a fan, but Tool is far, far from obscure.

America does have a healthy scene of bands who "get nice metal together" as well.

Sure. I like a lot of American metal bands as I do European.
Big TOOL fan but also Slayer, Death Angel, Whiplash, Exodus, the list goes on and on.

Bah Metallica. The first four albums are great.
But to each his own.

I'm stealing this last one.

I was a fan for years. They never bought into the iTunes thing years ago, guess their album art doesn’t translate well to digital. And now it’s all carried over to streaming I guess they had to bite the bullet - that’s where people listen to music now. Hope there’s a vinyl release - I’d rather put my money on a record.

Still, tool are obscure as far as mainstream culture goes. In the scene sure people know about them, and people who grew up in the 90’s. It was awesome growing up with them. I don’t know what would be the equivalent of tool these days. Sucks getting older, you lose touch a bit. But hey the 90’s were fun

Ah it's one of the obscure American "Metal" bands. Strange that so few American bands get nice metal together while Europe is full of great bands.

I'm sure you don't really care, but Tool isn't really a metal band. Most of my life I've hear them referred to as Prog Rock and Math Rock. I guess if a person who's not really into rock might put them into a category they consider to be metal. Of course none of this matters anyhow haha.
