I've owned 3 Apple Watches since they were release (original, 3 & 5) and use the 3 & 5, rotating between the two when the battery is low. I have to say the software update process is the biggest fail Apple has had since the previous version of the Apple TV remote. I started an update about 90 minutes ago and it's still going. This could be less of a headache if Apple were to figure out how to enable owners to wear one watch and update another. I was thinking of upgrading my 3 to a 7 when it comes out but I think I'll pass.

Is everyone's update process this painful?

That would really be lovely indeed. I really wonder where the problem is with this, surely can‘t be that difficult to implement.

Also playlist syncing when you have all the Music in the cloud anyway, why the need to be connected to the phone when the watch (unnecessarily) sits on the charger ;-)

Luckily I’ve never had an issue with Apple Watch updates. Literally just put it on and in 5/10 mins it’s all done.

Is your watch wifi or cellular? Mine are wifi only and I was wondering if the cellular versions could download the updates on their own.

My process is to start but powering down my Series 3. Make sure the 5 is on the charger with more than 50% battery and my iPhone nearby and plugged in too. On the phone Watch > General > Software Update and kick off the process. I do have Automatic Updates turned on (never seems to do anything, probably because I almost always have 1 watch on my wrist and the other on the charger). The download and install is painfully slow. I have a 1000 MB connection in my home and while I don't see speeds that fast, 200 mbps is slow at our house, so bandwidth to download updates is not the issue.

I kicked things off around 7:30a today and it finished a little after 9a. I've been avoiding updating lately because of how much a PITA this process is. Again, if I could wear 1 at night and update the other, the process could take 5 hours for all I care.

Do the update over night and you don’t have to worry about it… of course you couldn’t track your sleep that night.
I’ve done that several times and it works just fine

That's always a good backup plan but it feels more like a "You're holding it wrong" type of response. Multiple iPhones, MacBooks, iPads and Apple TVs at our house all update without jumping through hoops. I don't think it's too much to ask of Apple to figure out how to do that for the Watch.

That‘s working when you have one watch that is connected to the phone at night.
I have three and when they are charging they aren’t connected to the phone because I wear another one…

I was not suggesting that the process should not be improved, yes, I totally agree with that.
Yesterday after I installed the iOS update, the watch app started downloading the watch update, when that was done I put the watch on the charger and the whole process took like 20 or so minutes, this is AW4 ... that's not too bad, but frankly does not feel much longer than iOS updates (I always connect my phone to my computer nd download the full installer, I rarely ever do OTA).
I just know it takes time and do other things in the meantime ...

fair enough, but I also think this is a rather rare use case ... but maybe not

The one thing that pisses me off about watch updates is having to be connected to a charger even if the battery is full. What the hell is the point of requiring that if you can pull it off immediately after the update starts and it finishes just fine?

I think the watch only has 2.4ghz wifi and weak antenna on purpose (battery savings), so it just takes a long time to download. and then unpack and upgrade on a slow, low powered SOC takes time too.

Although it has improved a lot since my first S0 watch. That was slow as molasses updating, as well as day to day usage. I'm still using a S5, skipped the S6. I will see what S7 has to offer, maybe if its redesigned to be slightly thinner I would like that.

Updating the S3 is a giant pain and very slow. I upgraded to the S6 and the update process is soooo much better. It's very fast painless.

There is no hassle except for the 8 GB series 3. The 16 and 32 GB watches only have to be charging, wait like 10 minutes and it’s done.

Today I updated the AW5 GPS only and my iPhone 12. In that Order. The AW update took less than 6 minutes and the phone was even faster. I can’t remember any problems with updates on my AW. Older iPhones on the other hand can take a while to finish.

The updating devices were placed about two feet from the wifi router. Our bandwidth here in a rural area in Germany is just 100-200Mbps. The phone was plugged in as well via MagSafe charger. On the AW General > Software Update and it just startet without myself confirming anything or taping a button. It took like 2 minutes downloading and preparing. Then a little bit over 3 more minutes black screen with white apple logo. That’s it. I had no idea if this is fast or slow. It felt okay for me. Without this thread I guess I would have never ever wasted a thought about it.

I have no problems with updates on my watch, but I am sure times will vary based on how much data is in each update.

As an aside, I recently had a tooth extracted. My Oral surgeon is great, absolutely no pain, little soreness in the gums.

Currently using the series 5. I get the update to happen overnight as I sleep, so I wake up with my watch fully updated. Hardly an inconvenience.

I update my phone first, and while it’s rebooting/installing, then I go to the software update settings on my watch and update. It’s much faster than the watch trying to do it with the phone’s help. You could also just turn your phone off and then update the watch as well.

This was my second tooth out by him, both smooth as silk. His technique a little different, he doesn't yank the whole tooth at once, he breaks the tooth into smaller pieces and removes them.

No I didn't have to be on a charger!
