The S6 is my first AW and I think it took less than 10 minutes to do the update to 7.6 this AM.

S6 has 5Ghz WiFi, a faster chip (and perhaps also faster storage), all of which definitely help processes updates faster than previous versions, I guess the main issue is with S5 and below...

Apple could still improve the update process in other ways, but it seems S6 and beyond are already substantially better at it by pure brawl.

Anyone lived in west wales with broadband speeds of less than 2mbps (and yes that’s megabits not megabytes) don’t even talk to me about slow updates haaa

I don't like updating the watch. It just seems like a hassle, where you have to put in your passcode multiple times, make sure it's on the charger, and I worry that because of the length of time it takes to download, I will miss a stand hour. You should be allowed to wear the watch while it is updating.

I have to enter it 1 time, on the phone - confused by your statement.
Every update, be it iOS, macOS requires you to enter passcode/password to ensure you really want to perform that upgrade ...

Maybe I'm doing it wrong because I have to enter the watch passcode a few times.

This technique sound even scarier…..breaks into smaller pieces…..

could we stop this thread….i do feel my tooth all of a sudden…

If you can start the watch updates at 1 or 2 minutes past the hour and use that time to get your stand ring credit, you should be fine. I haven’t heard of a time when it took more than 90 minutes to update so you’d have plenty of time to get the second hour stand ring credit too, once it finished updating. A bit of a pain to have to do it this way, but if your stand ring credits are important, it should be a validly work around if your watch updates are taking a long time.

I’m seriously wondering what you guys are doing with the watch. 90 mins to update?!

The most it has taken my watch to update is in the ballpark of 10-15 mins.

I've only had my AW6 since January but done a few updates and generally its one passcode entry and done in not long at all. I generally do it when i put it on to charge at night. Never had an issue with one including the latest one that i did in 10 mins last night.

I updated my Series 5 Apple Watch last night from the comfort of my couch. My watch was upstairs charging and I had my iPhone downstairs. Totally painless process. A couple of taps on my iPhone and the watch was updated. Boom.

My Apple Watch always says it’s going to auto update overnight but it always fails, even though all is connected to power. Is it because I have a passcode? It doesn’t give a reason just says it’s failed.

Nope I have a passcode everywhere as well and auto update works just fine. In fact Apple Pay won’t work without you setting a passcode I think.

Last night I put my Watch on the charger with my phone, began the update, brushed my teeth, fed my cat and when I checked the update was done.

Painless. And without anesthetic.

Its certainly not the most intuitive process - and it's never updated overnight while its been on its charger and iPhone on same Wi-Fi, as updates suggest it will.

On the plus side, my 3 updated to 7.6 in a normal fashion, and did not require a complete delete and rebuild as with a previous update. Not sure why that was the case in the first place, as my Watch had plenty of space available for the install.

This could be less of a headache if Apple were to figure out how to enable owners to wear one watch and update another.
Quick update, at least with watchOS 8 that seems to be working. I updated my S4 and S5 while they were on the charger, while the iPhone was connected to the S6.
The watches updated autonomously without connection to the phone.

fair enough, but I also think this is a rather rare use case ... but maybe not
I always use two watches, mainly because I want to track my sleep and also because it gives me an excuse to replace the two year old watch every year.

Updates are an inconvenience, Apple make every other part of using multiple watches so easy you would think that they would have come up with an easy solution for updates.

Tooth extraction. IMO, the update process has gotten better. I had issues with earlier ownership that I think came down to wifi lapses, and the update app not handling that well. I had one time tried to update an earlier watch several times, and the download would stall. Frustrating...

Huh, didn’t know that. Just upgraded my S1 to a S6 when I found a deal at Best Buy for $279. It just completed an upgrade overnight and doesn’t seem to have any issues.
