I got a white silicone case from Amazon for about $7. It's now far easier to find (and to hold) -- highly recommended!

I got a similar one from Amazon which has a magnet in it too. The Magnet helps in letting me stick the remote to the TV when not in use so that its visible out right on the TV.

But, somehow I feel having the case on prevented the remote from working right while I was playing the Tennis game on ATV. As I got the remote out of it, the remote worked flawlessly again for the game.

I suspect the magnet in it could be screwing with the inbuilt sensors. Although the gyroscope in the remote could be all electronic circuitry and I could be completely wrong.

The majority of those were not known to me I have to admit. Appreciate it.
I purchased the ATV4 at launch, and I knew all of the Siri Remote tips, but #9. #9 will be very helpful for me though, as the new endless swiping for text often leads to wrong inputs for me.

Although, if Apple would just fix the text input, and have all the characters in a block instead of a line, I wouldn't mess up as much. That design is so stupid.

The fact these tips require explaining is a huge fail. Nothing about Apple products is intuitive any longer. Worst remote EVER!
This seems to be the trend for Apple products now. I find myself having to look up "How to do [this task]" on google for very simple tasks.

Apple software used to be much more intuitive....

These suggestions are helpful - but the fact remains that this is the worst remote I have ever had to deal with.

Using the remote learning feature, you can use almost any IR remote, I have TV remotes all learned to the ATVs that they are hooked up to. This feature has been around since the ATV2.

They even have optional playback buttons, like skip forward or back, fast forward and RW, separate pause and play, and others. So you would be adding features by using an IR.

The downside is that you won't have Siri, and some apps are not supported.

I don’t lose mine, but constantly pick it up and have it aimed the wrong way. After two months I’m still getting use to holding the remote without looking at it.

I have had mine since October 2015, and I still do it everyday. It is a poor design.

Tap twice on the main button to quickly see the time of day your video will end rather than remaining time.

Tap three times to toggle subtitles.

These work in most apps I use. Not all.

Which button is the "main" button? Or do you mean the trackpad since you said "tap"?

Interesting. I believe mine has a magnet as well, and it's never given me issues.

Well, last saturday was the first time I saw this issue. Until then I don't remember when I had to take the sleeve off the remote to play a game. FWIW, I still think the Apple TV is a very comfortable device when you have a host of Apple devices. My favorite part is to be able to use my 60 inch TV as a second screen to my Macbook Pro.

I used to have the older 3rd Gen AppleTV. But the app store from 4th Gen onwards has definitely been a game changer.

Is there a tip for not losing the damn thing in bed? Can’t find black things in the dark.

I still feel the newer remote from 4th Gen & above is much better. I had the 3rd Gen before and was always losing it in the recliner couch!

Sadly, its easier for Apple to make a how-to video after the fact, than make the software intuitive from the start.

Just look at the flood of recent how-to videos noted on MR lately. It has become laughable.

Put a brightly colored rubberband around the bottom. Also helps you quickly orient the thing in your hand. I started doing this after the 100th time I found myself swiping on the wrong part of the remote. 1) this is free because you already have rubber bands and 2) you're not buying more plastic to put into the world.

Now that I’m watching OTA using Channels (with a network tv tuner)
Would be interested to hear more about this. My "tv" is a projector, so I bought an external DTV receiver box and an OTA antenna, and have it plugged into my receiver on a separate HDMI port from my ATV. Works very nicely, but are you saying there's a way to control your OTA tuner through the ATV?

Swipe to change a setting....nothing happens, swipe again - the selection moves five steps across the screen....swipe once more....no movement.
The only place I've experienced that on the Apple TV is in the new YouTube app - which treats the touchpad as a D-pad and thus completely misinterprets swipes (gee, thanks Google). Everywhere else the response of the remote has been pretty much flawless for me. Perhaps check the touch sensitivity option in the settings and/or clean off the touchpad? Or, possibly, there's a lot of interference with Bluetooth at your home?

I got the "Griffin Survivor Play" case in translucent white - I've also tried a couple of random silicone cases from Amazon, but they don't seem to fit as well (it's entirely possible that other/newer ones are improved). The Griffin one has nice curved/contoured bits on the bottom that make it easier to pick up off a table. I've also got Apple's "Remote Loop" on it entirely to serve as a "tail" - makes it easier to find, and trivial to tell end from end without looking. With these additions (which should not be necessary, Apple), it's my favorite remote: comfortable to hold, very fast response, everything I need, nothing I don't (I don't like remotes where you have to aim in between two dozen useless buttons to get to the three that work for the current function/device). It's no good for text input, but few remotes are (I just reach for my iPhone).

These types of comments crack me up. None of these tips are required for the easy use of the remote, these are just shortcuts. I knew most of them but still learned a few new ones and appreciated the tip about turning the double click of the home/tv button back to home as opposed to the tv app (which I still haven not really used).

Worst apple product at the moment. I love my Apple TV 4K but that remote is a piece of sh%t.
Jobs would have sh4t on it and stabbed someone if he'd lived to have seen it.

The worst thing about it is not knowing which way up it is when you pick it up.
The 2nd worst thing is too many buttons.

I found this pretty useful, but I'm thrilled to learn about the new version of the remote with the raised white ring. Whenever I pick the thing up, I never know which way it's supposed to go. The raised white ring would go a LONG way in fixing that. I love apple, but sometimes they're too clever for their own good.

These types of comments crack me up. I’d urge you to try a Roku or Fire. The user experience is so much better on those just because of the full function remote. Even the same app (YouTube for example) is superior on the Roku.

Handy, especially that last one for setting HomePod as output after using HomePod for something else (that really should be automatic).

God though, that touch sensitive part of the remote is so bad. The simple old button based one was miles better (except for the catch on the battery compartment).

if you don't like the remote
use the remote app on a iPhone-Ipad or apple watch or use the IR older remote

only items that I keep doing one the included remote is when pressing the right side to jump forward I push up a bit activating the cc options menu

Its too sensitive, my wife hates it, I told her to use my white remote from my 2006 IMac..lol

The Channels app works with HDHomeRun network TV tuners made by SiliconDust.

I use a Harmony 650 remote. I really like the Apple TV remote and want to use it, but it won’t turn my sound bar on or off. It’ll control the sound and turn my TV on and off, but not the sound bar.

Once learning about Harmony Remotes many years ago, I have never looked back. It is so much easier just to hit "watch TV", Listen to Music" or "watch a movie", "Roku", " Apple TV". All AV devices turn on or off as programmed. The Apple remote is all right, but the supposed convenience really isn't. These are great tips, but the vast majority of users will never see them and continue to be frustrated with multiple gestures and multiple remotes.
