I love the phrase: "is just around the corner"...

I leave for a 3 week trip to Asia in one week and still get back a week before the release event.

The asteroid 2024 YR4 is predicted to pass by Earth (with a 3% chance of impacting the Earth) on December 22, 2032. And that event is just around the corner too. That's 8 years which is when Apple AI may be launched. LOL

Blood Pressure Monitoring will be a good addition. I am not a big fan of screen size, so it doesn't bother me that the screen is smaller.

Yeah. I agree. In my own experience the watch doesn’t really work if the phone isn’t nearby. I’ve lost my phone in an uber, and thought I would be ok with just the watch. The watch wouldn’t get messages or calls without the phone, even though I had a cellular plan on my awu
I agree with this completely. I had something similar happen and could get imessages but could not receive SMS until I found the phone and got it reconnected to cellular service. After looking into it, this is just the way it works and the watch cannot receive SMS from the paired number unless it is being fed from the phone.

To connect to a satellite do you need a separate plan for the watch? Does it connect through a satellite capable phone? I have no idea how it works and am hoping someone will enlighten me. If it would be completely independent from a phone and I would not have to connect it to my cell plan I would definitely be tempted.

The only other device with this tech is the iPhone. When they launched these services they said it would be "free for the first two years" after you bought an iPhone (without stating prices after) but its been maybe 4 years since the first satellite communication enabled phones and Apple has yet to charge, it remains a free service. They can start charging (and blocking the service for those who don't pay) for devices older than 2 years but they haven't. I'd assume the watch will have gain some of the ability the phone current has and will be able to SEND a GPS location to emergency services, text back and forth between emergency services, send texts back and forth between friends and family, and send them your location.

It’s literally been my experience with multiple Apple Watch Ultras. Maybe there’s a bug, but it’s effected me on two watches and like three phones

It sounds like your carrier didn't set it up correctly.

I am getting sick of spending this money every few years on Apple Watches. I finally bought a G-Shock mudmaster that’s solar powered. If I wanna take my blood pressure will. If I want to see my text messages I’ll read my phone. If I want to pay for something I’ll use my phone or money. If I want to track my steps I can see it on my phone 😝😜

This is why many of us use Garmins.

The instinct line is very "G-Shock" like and can still show you texts/calls coming in, and be used to pay on the go and tracks all the fitness stuff, etc.... while offering vastly better battery life than all AW options (and it's not close).

Not my experience with my Ultra 2, i was without my phone for the day and i got everything i expected to get with regards to calls and messages.

I just got the Venu X1. Squared form factor, that I like, and most of the Fenix features in a slim and lightweight profile. Battery life of 8 days with always-on off. Win win.

That has peaked my interest...
Amazed how thin and light that is.

It's somewhat shocking honestly.

I've worn several models of the Instinct, starting from their first one. They're great watches, very rugged, good sensors and great battery life, especially the solar models, which rarely need charging. They have enough connectivity to the iPhone to be useful, without being annoying. I eventually upgraded to a Fenix 8 which has built-in mapping, and other features that are useful to me being in rural Colorado and doing a lot of outdoor activities.

I still have an Apple Watch Ultra I, and I don't plan to upgrade until this watch stops receiving updates or some kind of Diabetes Glucose monitoring is included in the watch at that point. That would be a game changer.

I have an AW 7, and there's not a chance in hell I will upgrade it until Apple (1) allows watch faces from 3rd-party developers - because their own are horrendous, and (2) resolves the blood oxygen sensor issue - because this is a basic feature found in $99 watches.

When an $800 AWU lacks features, options, and capabilities found in a $99 competitor, that type of embarrassment should be your motivation to do better. Clearly, Apple's threshold for embarrassment is pretty high.

It’s not really a hiking watch unless you can download routes, as opposed to navigating to waypoints. Apple should take a look at “ultra” type watches that Suunto and Garmin have been making for many years.

Yeah I’m thinking about the 50mm instinct 3 tactical version.

I have long considered an Apple Watch Ultra, but until 3 days battery life is achievable, and better metrics/GUI for workouts, I'll stick with my Garmin Fenix 8
