I'm going to agree with La Vita Bella, it's just wonderful in so many ways, and really echoed my own thoughts on life.
West Side Story gets me too, but only because of Bernstein's music, not the movie itself.

oh and Pirates of the Caribbean. no other movie has caused me to yell out ARRRRR! so many times in the theater. definitely got the heart of this pirate beating faster

Donnie Darko? I was left touching my head and scratching it after watching that movie.
Same here. But I bought the DVD. Had about 5 movie nights with friends watching it, and it just kicks ass when you think aobut it.

I don't usually cry, but yeah, that movie definitely got me....so tragic.

A couple others:

Casablanca - I don't know what it is, but it gets me every time I see it.

Chinatown - the ending is a kick in the gut no matter how many times you've seen the film

Seven - see above

American Beauty

#1, most definitely, Hotel Rwanda.
Can't believe only one person put down that one.
#2, La Vita Bella (aka Life is Beautiful). Even more for me because I speak Italian and can follow along with what they are actually saying and the emotion in their voice, instead of just the dubbing or subtitles. And Roberto Benigni simply rocks.

1. Schindler's List
2. Hotel Rwanda
3. Garden State
4. Forrest Gump
5. Regarding Henry
I saw Garden State last night (TiVo'd it earlier in the week). Great flick, but can someone explain to me why Natalie Portman didn't get a higher billing? She should have been right up there with Zach Braff  When I was watching the credits they had her mixed in with all the other actors. Not cool. And on IMDb she's not even on the first page - although she is on the cover of the DVD. Go figure. Anyways the movie was good, but primarilly because of her.

Well, I guess they could have been, but typically the best actors still get top billing don't they?

The egocentric ones do.. clearly Garden State wasn't a big budget project, it was a passion that came to fruition. I suspect Zach and Natalie are either friends or met and did the whole 'love yoyur work, we should work together sometime', etc. I suspect she didn't get paid very much either. So.. what does this all boil down to?

Since it's an indie pic, big actors that get into them do that for 4 different reasons, IMO. Money & billing in the movie is rarely it. It's about 1) practicing your craft, 2) doing a different type of film that you might not get offered in mainstream hollywood, 3) doing for a friend, 4) or as part of the indie fad to get yourself recognized/jumpstart your career/smooth over that fish-love fetish. Now I know the last one and my insistance that billing isn't important are a bit at odds, but it's all about the perception of being a 'good guy'.

Mostly I think it's #1 and #2, and to a lesser extent, #3.

Natalie Portman is a good acrtress. I don't think she needs the $ or the billing. My guess, is this film was #3 and #1 and a touch of #2.

i will admit. when i was young G.I. Joe the movie had me almost in tears when the leader of the team died.

GI Joe the cartoon movie was another hit to the gut.
Sad animation (in no particular order):

1) Fantastic Planet. So sad when all the aliens died. (I was young)
2) Graveyard of the Fireflies. When the little girl died. They made a live action version too
3) Banner of the Stars. That one had me crying for a while. Forget whether it was 1 or 2.
4) Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho. When the girl woke up.

More if I think of anything else.
