Perhaps the most amazing revelation is that the top posters haven't been posting so much because somebody had threatened to hurt their goldfish if they didn't. They seem to have spent all that time posting of their own free will!

I protect myself from such potential threats by not having a goldfish. Always thinking, I am...

Goldfish worth $1000 - 6 hours left to bid!

I've got to change from Clark Kent back to Superman for the weekend (doing chores faster than a speeding bullet), so I'll continue the journalism on Monday.

For a thousand bucks that fish better be made of gold. But what good is a solid gold fishing lure, can anyone prove its better.

Interview questions:
Do you expect your posting habits to change in the future? If you are visiting more/less and your post rate has gone up/down, why?

My comments:
None of these members is planning a big increase in post rate -- unless you count a couple of posts by eyelikeart as a big increase (since it is, percentagewise).

Several of our top posters now devote their time to other interests and responsibilities. When their "other interest" is a new spouse, it's certainly a big change of focus, and you can't blame them for that!

MacRumors has been a part of these members' online lives, so it might always be "in their blood" to some extent. As mkrishnan, shadowfax, vniow, and others say, they aren't leaving us anytime soon.

It's a surprise to learn that jsw met his own brother in real life, since some of us never get up from our computers long enough to see another human being. I think I have a brother too, but I don't remember.

Interview answers:

Backtothemac:
Well work took over my life really. I have banned myself from the political threads because I was nearly banned I am sure a few times. I always wanted to help with moderating, and I knew that I would never get there in the political threads.

Doctor Q:
I spend more time at MacRumors than I used to, but spend less of it posting because of my responsibilities as a moderator and administrator.

edesignuk:
Things have changed a lot lately what with getting married and moving out of home and all. It's hard to find the time to keep up with things round here anymore.

eyelikeart:
I'm likely one of the least active members in the top 10 or 20...or am I? I still look around from time to time, but a lot of names aren't familiar & I'm WAY out of the loop on a lot of stuff. I'm visiting considerably less, and my post count hasn't changed much in the past few years I'd say. I guess it was around the time I left my last job & went freelance that I kinda had to do more at the computer than waste an employer's time. :p

jelloshotsrule:
Well I'll be getting married. Hah. But I don't think it'll change a ton.

jsw:
As long as I have the time and ability to spend time here, I will. I enjoy the site as a source of information, but even more so as a place where I can be a part of a community with a large number of friends, none of whom - barring my brother, of course - I've met in real life. I tend to post often for periods of time, then go away for weeks (children being born, going on vacation, getting busy with work, etc.), so I'm not sure how my post rate has been; I suspect it's been reasonably stable over long periods but quite variable from month to month. I do know I now spend more time here, because post reports bring me to the site more often than before, but I'm not sure how my posting rate has been affected.

MacBandit:
Also MacRumors is just not the same anymore since its membership has grown out of control to a point where a member even one with the history I do is just a pebble on a beach. Due to this my experience and contributions just doesn't seem to be quite as beneficial to community as it use to be.

mad jew:
Who knows... It's stayed eerily steady for the last year, but I'm not sure if it'll remain at its current rate. I dunno if it'll increase or decrease though… :D

mkrishnan:
My rate will wax and wane, but I don't expect to leave anytime soon. I'm very loyal! I guess I'm fairly static, although I suspect I might trend down somewhat, because of changes in my hospital responsibilities.

Mr. Anderson:
I'm always working on my computer most days, so stopping by to see what's going on is always going to happen. How much I get to post is limited though. Marriage, kids, etc.

Rower_CPU:
If anything I'll post less as time goes on. There are too many commitments in my life these days to leave with free time to post as much as I used to. I'll keep lurking and helping out where I can, though. As I said earlier, changes in job and life AFK have lead me to post less than before. I don't mind it, but I do miss some of the off-beat interactions I had with other prominent posters at the time.

shadowfax:
I think I'll always be a Mac Geek, and I'll always visit MacRumors, especially around MWSF. But I don't see myself becoming active in the community forums again. My post rate has been in decline for quite a long time. I have gone back to treating MacRumors/MacBytes as primarily news sites. Occasionally I will read threads associated with news items that I am particularly interested in, but that's about it--My life outside the forums has become a lot busier... I'd been dating a girl since May, and I just married her 2 weeks ago, so there's that... Also, the friends I have made at college are a lot more active in real life, so I've drifted away from spending as much time in front of the screen.

~Shard~:
It's tough to say. I have definitely been getting busier and busier as time has gone on, so I do see myself slowing down over time. However, I do want to continue to be an active member on MacRumors and keep my Demi-ship for a very long time. As long as Macs are a part of my life I hope that MacRumors will be as well. I feel I am visiting less than I have in the past, at least in terms of the past several months, however I think my count count hasn't decreased too much because I am much more familiar with the site now. I know my way around, where threads/posts will be which I'll want to comment on, I have my notification system via my e-mail and the Forum Spy helps a lot too. I guess I would say I am a more "efficient" poster now than I used to be. ;) :D

vniow:
Not really, unless I get a full time job that keeps me busy enough so I don't have time (with any luck), otherwise they've been prety consistent for a good while. I plan to stick around here until I get bored of it all but fo far its too entertaining to let go of. :D

What do you get out of MacRumors?

Interview question:
What do you get out of MacRumors that caused you to stay for years?

My comments:
The community aspects of MacRumors have been the primary attraction for most top posters, although some are still focused on the Apple rumors and technical discussions. Almost everyone starts out on the Apple/technical side but, as Rower_CPU points out, MacRumors is "more than just a rumor site".

Interview answers:

Backtothemac:
The Friendships and information.

bousozoku:
The good people and the sharing of knowledge keep me returning, even after I've sworn to remain away.

Doctor Q:
Originally, it was to find information, but I soon found that helping others was even more satisfying. Many members are more of a Mac expert than I've ever been, but now I help members by being part of the site management team and I get satisfaction whenever I do a good job of that.

edesignuk:
It's just a generally nice, mostly friendly and interesting place to be.

eyelikeart:
I liked it because it was like being around friends while I was at work everyday. I ended up meeting a few members at our "Geek Fests" and made some friends. The one that sticks out the most is Chuck (Backtothemac), mostly because he housed me & my stepdaughter for over 2 weeks following Hurricane Katrina.

jefhatfield:
Of course, next week's Apple move into cellphones is keeping me here, and keeping me guessing.

jsw:
A sense of belonging and camaraderie.

MacBandit:
The main thing I think I got was a place to voice my opinions kind of like blogging does now days.

mad jew:
There are a lot of cool people 'round here. Australia's pretty isolated and I really like the international aspect of MacRumors. It's fascinating learning about y'all and your various cultures and habits.

Mr. Anderson:
Its a great community and a great resource for Mac Users.

Rower_CPU:
The community has been great. I think people find the site for a technical reason - which Mac should they get, what's the latest rumor, etc. - but then discover the wealth of the people behind it that make it more than just a rumor site.

shadowfax:
The reason that I've stayed around for so many years is my interest in Apple and their product releases. What a fantastic, fascinating company they are!

~Shard~:
For me it's an informative, fun, useful Forum which is well-moderated, which makes a big difference in my opinion. I can stay up to date with the current news and rumors, I can learn about technology aspects in general, have any questions answered which I may have and am able to help others out as well. Obviously the community plays a big part as well. Not only have I made a number of online friendships but just being able to talk about "whatever" in the Community forums, or specific topics such as favorite TV shows, sports and other personal likes definitely adds another element to the site. To summarize, I came for the information and resources, I stayed for the community.

vniow:
The people. The humour. The banter. In a community as tight-knit as this nothing else compares.

Pah! You're still a newbie 'til you stay out past 4:00AM on MacRumors. Show some dedication, girl!

If I stayed up til 4, I'd be banned by now. (You'd be surprised what I say after staying up 22 hours.) Right now, it's 12:30 AM, Im not tired (Thanks to a little nap in Reading class :D)

However, this Saturday, I'll be on 'til I have posted 50 times or more in 24 hours, or until my posts become so illegible, they aren't included in my post count. (Someone remind me by PM)

Speaking seriously, I'm surprised Phungy is already at 6502 status. It took me from sep.-dec. to reach 6502. He joined in December, and he's already 6502. At this rate, Some of you should be worrying about your top 50 status.:) ;)

Really? I'm actually surprised Phungy hasn't been a member for longer! I've seen his name everywhere, and I just thought, "Geez Ian, maybe I just didn't pay close enough attention to screennames before and didn't notice that Phungy has been posting here for ages." Turns out he's just prolific.

How long do you think you'll hang around MacRumors?

Interview question:
How long do you think you'll hang around MacRumors?

My comments:
It's hard to get rid of some of these members, no matter how hard we try to drive them out! OK, actually, they are all quite welcome here, and it's great that we can still hear their voices over the cacophony of so many forum members. Not all 95,000+ members are active posters, of course, but it's certainly a lot more crowded than when these members joined.

Interview answers:

Backtothemac:
As long as it will load on my browser.

bousozoku:
I'll hang around MacRumors until I die or it goes away.

Doctor Q:
Probably for years to come. Otherwise, I might miss an interesting news story or thread!

edesignuk:
I will hang around, just won't have the presence I might have once had due to lots of other real life stuff.

MacBandit:
I'll probably continue to post occasionally for as long as MacRumors continues to be MacRumors.

mad jew:
I'd like to stay a bit longer. It really depends on Real Life™ though... I imagine this place'd be good stress relief for when I become a husband (if I can ever actually pin a lady down).

Mr. Anderson:
I'll be here for a while still and I don't think anything will change - I'll just end up being passed by more and more members and be part of the history - Remember When Mr. Anderson was the top poster.…

wdlove:
I have become busy with other sites. Yes, I miss some of my friends. I'm not sure, but my friends and the community would be a reason to return.
