Have you noticed posting rivalries?

Interview question:
Have you noticed rivalries for the top posting spots?

My comments:
This is where I tried to stir up controversy and scandal with a provocative question.

eyelikeart and Mr. Anderson don't mention having a friendly posting rivalry, but a few other long-time members mention it. (Mr. Anderson went by the name dukestreet in earlier years.)

jelloshotsrule's crazy posting day is mentioned, but that wasn't part of a rivalry. It was more like Wilt Chamberlain scoring 100 in an NBA game.

Interview answers:

Backtothemac:
Oh, yea. Mr. A and eyelikeart were back and forth for quite a while. We could never catch them no matter what we did. i remember onetime Jello had a stupid amount of posts in 24 hours, but they were never like the one line posts. It really was incredible.

bousozoku:
I don't remember anything about rivalries.

Doctor Q:
There's still a bit of status attached to top poster positions, and part of that is probably my fault for creating the Top Poster threads. Still, I don't think the top posters have posted spam just to try to pass or keep ahead of each other.

edesignuk:
Nope, I don't think so.

eyelikeart:
I would like to say yes, but cannot drum up any details if so.

jelloshotsrule:
Yeah, definitely. I'd always get jabs about how many posts I was making, etc. I remember when I made something like 70 in one day and I got hell for it. Now that's small change to some of these no lifers. ;)

jsw:
No. Moderation has been more consistent, I think, since the earlier years, and posting rivalries wouldn't tend to be tolerated now.

MacBandit:
There were some rivalries but it was mostly just friendly prodding. Nothing that ever became a contest leading to useless spamming. It could have just been my perception but there was a time when it felt like there was a contest going on between Scem0 and me to try to be more involved in the community than the other. Other than that though I really didn't seek out any adversaries.

Macmaniac:
Goodness it has been awhile, I don't remember a lot, but I will try to remember what I can. The biggest old rivalry I can think of was when DukeStreet aka Mr. A and Eye went at it for awhile. That was the real big battle I can recall. Jefhatfield was one of the more frequent posters along with Blakespot and a few others.

mkrishnan:
I don't think there are rivalries for post count, except friendly ones. A few of us used to call ourselves the Horsemen of the Apocalypse™ for a while (™ not optional), although that disbanded. And we make fun of Mad Jew for his post rate. But I think I like most of the top 20 or 30 posters pretty well, and some of them are particularly the reason I come to MR... I love reading about their days and what's going on in their lives, and I love just goofing around with them.

Mr. Anderson:
Aside from a few inane and annoying posters, things have been relatively good. For a long time the mods have been the most prolific posters and even now, they're well represented in the top 10. I never noticed anyone making mention of trying to out do posting over another.

Rower_CPU:
Sure, when dukestreet and eyelikeart were both going at it, it was fun to watch the friendly rivalry they had going. For the most part though, the ups and downs of the top group have been pretty mundane.

shadowfax:
Yes, I remember them. I seem to remember it associated with the IRC channel as well, and I may be confusing my posting rank above with the rank I had in IRC…

~Shard~:
I've never been involved in any rivalries (to my knowledge!) when it comes to posting. I have never thought anything of it from a competitive standpoint. That being said, the competitor in me used to enjoy watching myself move up the ranks, but that was more of a personal thing. Now, it doesn't really matter to me. All that being said though, I must admit I do enjoy being a bastard when people make certain comments regarding my post count and the like, when they are just as bad. ;) :D I bugged jsw about this when I saw that he was going to easily surpass me, and lately I've been subtly bugging Blue Velvet that her post rate (10.6 ppd) is just as high as mine.;) Gotta be the MacRumors Bastard after all!

vniow:
There were a bit, no flame wars for certain but a small fuss was made when I became the first poster to crack the top ten in a good while, hehe.

wdlove:
No rivalries that I know of occurred.

Q has been watching to much Springer.

Well, according to his profile, he was active about three days ago.

That's the thing though, older users rarely ever post any more and have practically resorted to lurking again.

I kinda wish they would come back to Community Discussion and get back involved in all the friendly banter and goofing off.

Well... you could try PM'ing them, or if you happen to have thier email adress....

Meh, doesn't make a differnce to me. I've only been here 5 months (Wow, has it really been that long already?) so I don't really know much of these posters.

Out with the old and wise, in with the new and stupid! (i.e, me :))

Posters come and go, some return and post, others vanish off into the sunset. A lot of the original posters have gone on to better things I guess. Or they just get lives.:)

hmph.. who has lives? i pity the fools...

Those who were bored with the WWDC keynote today might find another current event to be more interesting.

It was fated to happen at some point, and now it has. Late last week my position in the top posters list passed that of our retired-from-the-forums friend wdlove.

I captured the big moment when we were tied:

Ah yes, we all knew this would happen at some point! Has wdlove retired again from the Forums? He was gone for so long, then came back, but has apparently left again. Any ideas?

And since you love crunching the numbers, how long before mkrishnan and myself pass our dear old friend as well? Any updated statistical predictions? ;)

You can't wait the 23 days until the next thread in the series? :p

... and next month is the next iteration of your Extrapolated series, no?
Apparently you've been extrapolating the schedule of my extrapolations!

Yes, I hope to turn the crank on my calculator again and see if any new numbers appear.

He's doing fine, but doing fine elsewhere.

I predict you and mkrishnan will never pass wdlove because brand new members attracted by the incredible multi-tabbed iChat feature in Leopard will overwhelm MacRumors and drive us all out. However, I reserve the right to change my mind next month when I check the actual posting rates.

No. No I can't. I'm an impatient bastard and want to know now. :p

In all seriousness, yes, I can wait, I was just curious, that's all. ;) Plus, I know Doctor Q will take any opportunity he can to do some number crunching - it brings him such great joy, well, I like to help out and make him happy whenever I can. ;) :D
