There was a screen shot at the September event that clearly shows top charts and category options. Maybe Apple is waiting for more apps to be available to turn it on?

I have my complaints about this device by my god it's only been on sale for a few days. I think it's silly for developers to be freaking out about discoverability after only a couple days on sale. If a month from now we still don't have a good way to search for apps then yeah complain away.

I don't think you understand how many late hours these developers put in to provide content for the Apple TV on launch day.

All that effort to be there and capture some of the user base on launch day is lost if no on can find your app.

But you are just the app consumer, and I'm sure it's fine to just shrug it off.

So you think app developers deserve to get an undeserved benefit by simply being first?

How much time do you have?

No seriously, do you live in a parallel Earth where this thing doesn't SUCK? Can I even browse the Apps available for this thing before I buy one? Where is it on Apple's web site? Where is it in iTunes? Where is it anywhere but on the device you had to have already bought? How do I find what's available once I'm there other than entering one alphabetical letter at a time on a remote that won't take voice input for such things and won't let you use your iPhone or other iOS device to enter search data?

Oh, can you type your login name and password through your iPhone like the last AppleTV to set it up and to authorize purchases??? NOPE. How is that BETTER?????

WTF are you even talking about? TV Remote Codes!?!??!?! Yeah, I think you ARE living in a parallel universe where the AppleTV Remote apparently controls other remote devices....

Siri doesn't even work with your own damn iTunes Library! (yeah, that would be 600 movies and 9000 songs here that it JUST IGNORES. And no I would not count on Apple EVER adding such support because it's in THEIR BEST INTERESTS to try and force you to buy everything (including your next child) through the iTunes store!

Yeah, that's the #1 thing it should be able to do. I bought my first AppleTV first and foremost to send audio around the house. Video was secondary. But it can't find your movies on your iTunes library either, only if it's on Apple's STORE or Netflix and the like.

How does it stream "faster" ? Does it magically make your Internet connection faster???? WTF are you talking about? 802.11AC maybe? Yeah, if you have an 802.11AC router, it MIGHT (depending on your connection and the alignment of the moon) stream the data faster. It was already more than fast enough to stream a 1080p movie and since there is no 4K, how much faster does it really need to be?

The show? Been watching The Wall lately or something? I own multiple AppleTVs and the reason I'm upset is that after reading the reviews, I DON'T want this model, after all and I've been waiting a LONG time for Apple to come out with an AppleTV that can load Apps. I'd like to have Kodi on it. But I bet that will never happen because Apple will simply reject them.

OH....so what you mean by "buttery smooth" is VOICE CONTROL. You apparently don't notice it can't load a single movie or song you own that you didn't buy at the iTunes store, but given your fanatical ranting on here, I'm assuming you pretty much bought near 100% of all your stuff from Apple anyway so of course it works great for you. Now I get it. o_O

You've got one fracked up idea of "perfect".

Not true. Not true. You'll go "wow" when you see how much your bank account went down after buying your next Apple product! :D

Other things...

Still no local storage support or connection for such things

Still no NAS support (still need to have your Mac or Windows machine on to access your local content)

No Optical Audio out (all prior had it including the cheap $69 model)

No Analog (RCA) Audio out (nice to have on Gen1; wouldn't cost them more than a few quarters to add per unit)

No pass-through for your cable box (nice feature on the XBox but obviously they hope to sell you a cable alternative at some point in the future, not convenience you to keep it)

NO AMAZON APP! ;)

I too was happy that the ATV remote picked up my AV receiver without using remote IR codes.

local storage? Not necessary and not the strategy here. Combine this silly complaint with the NAS complaint and the simple solution is already present in apps like Plex or simplex. Local storage? Why? How about I buy my own replaceable, upgradable storage and tell an app like plex where it is. Much better.

Optical OUt? What is this, 1995? Optical out is inferior and outdated. Go buy modern equipment. Any modern A/V equipment handles HDMI. If you dont want to upgrade to modern equipment, go buy a HDMI>Optical splitter. Its $20.

RCA Out? What is this, 1975? I'm not even addressing this one.

No pass-through? who cares? Ideally, the cable box is on it's way out.

Amazon App? I wont claim to know whether its an Amazon fault or Apple fault as many others do...but I do know this...If I want to watch something on Prime that is not available anywhere else (which is rare), I fire up my ipad and press a button and BINGO! Amazon Prime on my Apple TV via airplay. That will do fine until Apple and Amazon play nice together.

I like the ATV better than the 3. To say that it is almost perfect is pretty inaccurate I think. Still many apps that you are already paying a subscriber for. The games are blown up iPhone/iPad game. It has potential, but we have not seen what this baby can do yet. Odd thing is, the stuff they have on it right now, right this minute, they could have put on the old device.

To be fair here, Apple leaving out optical (inferior old tech) is nothing different than them dropping optical drives, or the whole country dropping VHS. Because I say this and think it's fine to drop optical out (a technology I used for many years but its past its expiration date) doesn't immediately mean that I'm in a brigade of Kool-Aide drinkers. Do you still have a VHS player? Am I a kool-aid drinker because I've upgraded and moved on from that old tech along with the company's that used to produce it?

Was this product even ready for release??? or this is just another Apple pastime that wont be taken serious untill the 10th generation???

IMHO, its ready for Apple Release. Look at this similarly to the Apple Watch launch. Both are similar in terms of the OS Perspective. Its a new development platform and thus needs time for both people to use it as well as for developers to make stuff for it. Both devices were at a point where Apple needed to release hardware. Now the question is if Apple released hardware before software was fully baked. Or.... Do they do this on purpose to throw off the competition. I'm thinking its the latter. The double down of secrecy might have more to do with OS functionality then the hardware itself, which always seems to leak. Apple typically does 1 year Os refreshes and the competition knows that. By releasing hardware and then 2-3 months later announce a new OS, leaves the competition who turned on the copy machines flat footed since they are chasing the wrong target. I believe that is also the case here as well. We all know this is not Apple's ultimate goal in terms of TV. I'm willing to bet there is a TVos 2.0 that will be announced shortly after the new year. Also, Apple like to do things in baby steps to get people accustomed to new features and not overwhelm. They also can see reaction and make changes based on feedback. This is usually the case in every S release of the iPhone. A new feature with limited functionality and once people are accustomed to it they open things up to many more possibilities. This was the case with Siri, TouchID, and now 3D Touch.

Amazon will release an app when it works to their marketing advantage. Right now it doesn't. Those that have existing ATV's and wanted to watch prime do so via airplay and that works the same. Amazon knows this. At this point there is no advantage for Amazon to be on the ATV. However, once universal search works across all 3rd party apps to look for content, then Amazon will appear. The when you search for a TV show or movie, their content will be listed along with the others and it will make sense. They also will be able to hype it up and I'm sure tie it in with new Price Show lineup or 2nd season of Transparent being avail.

They need a list of media apps that do not require TV provider login
Why? That list will be very short and contain virtually no interesting channels. It really wasn't that hard or stressful to sign into 4 or so good channels that I want to watch. I survived. I didn't get dehydrated or stressed out. I just did it. Now it's over and I can enjoy those channels. If this is a hard task for you, there might be a physical issue for you and you might want to visit your doctor.

If your App is good people will find it.

Its not Apple's job to market your App. How much is Apple charging you to put your App in their store front? Basically nothing. Try doing that in a retail store like BestBuy.

The guy was just lazy. He just thought that just because he would be one of the first Apps on the store he deserves to make $$$

How are you going to find it?

I need a streaming app, right let's start with a....than b....than c.....takes a while to get to z, and given it will give you the title only , how do you know what the app does.

So basically give up and use google hoping that someone has somehow compiled top 10 lists for categories?

For you information, when I go to best buy, and I want a TV , it's in the electronic section ;) it's funny how retail stores are designed with "categories" ;) cause if they were not , the customer does not comeback to your retail store

Without dev support the App Store and premise of the ATV is dead. Might be worth investing in the devs, so they help you grow.

Can you send those silly developers an email when it's okay for them to complain, they probably aren't aware they have to follow YOUR code of conduct.

Are you alright? Your replies seem incredibly aggressive and condescending....

I'm fine. Just tired of people expecting Apple to run their business on their time table not Apple's.

Its so obvious that categories are coming soon. People just need to chill out.

Wait what? The early bird gets the worm. If you are first you get LOTS more than other developers do at launch. Obviously. All because you took the time to be first.

And the very nature of a top 10 list. If it sucks? It won't be there when the other developers get around to releasing their stuff.

I honestly have no idea what point you are trying to make.

I think he is trying to say developers should be happy that Apple allows us the honor to pay them $100 every year to be able to submit our applications to them, where they may or may not make those applications easily accessible to potential users.

$100 is dirt cheap for the kind of worldwide market Apple offers.

Trying distributing software in Bestbuy/Circuit City in the 90's. Apple totally changed the game. But people now are so spoiled they want everything done yesterday.

Apple has very good reasons why they don't have categories. They don't do this stuff to piss people off. My guess is:

1. There isn't enough content to do categories yet.
2. The big boys paid extra to be featured in the App store before categories start.

Lol. I couldn't have said it any better.

But, Apple doesn't market for us, right? Having a worldwide user base and worldwide marketing are two very different things. Sure, people all over the world COULD buy an app. But without a reasonable way to find them, they won't.

Also, you can't pay to be featured. You just have to be one of the chosen ones.
