Messenger is so damn pointless. It was just fine merged in the Facebook app. Who there thought it was a good idea that if I got a message to kick me out of the app and force me to download another to respond to it.

You don't socialize much, do you? If you have more than 1 friend on Facebook, you'd understand why the Messenger app is a necessity.

I socialize either with a phone (call or text) or by being with the person. Also, the site didn't mystically stop working.

Really! As long as people choose to download it, no amount of bitching about how bad it is will change Facebook's attitude. The ONLY way we can send a message to Facebook that this is not a good idea is to choose to NOT use the app. But since everyone did download it, well, you all have encouraged this kind of behavior. So don't expect anything to change :(

Exactly, but it is much easier to complain and keep doing whatever's easiest.

There should be a list by highest popular rating/comments of some kind. Most downloaded is nothing special...

I still don't get why the iPad doesn't have a stock calculator app.

Anyone knows the reason behind it?

absolutely sure. you can easily see it by the version history dates on both apps in the app store. Threes! creators are not happy about this:
http://asherv.com/threes/threemails/
but there is nothing they can do. it happens with every good game - scum devs come along and rip it off.

Right, thanks. I'll give it a go.
Unfortunately that's always what happens with popular games, and rip offs are often pure crap, though I like 2048, so Threes! might be even better.

Did the text, email, and phone functions on your iPhone stop working recently? That's the only way I could see FBM being a necessity.

I never thought the day would come when angry birds wasnt on a top 10 list. Honestly, I never got what the hype was all about.

I understood the hype... five years ago. I'd probably still understand the hype if Rovio didn't turn every new rehash of Angry Birds into a money-grubbing IAP-fest by making levels insanely difficult without using the mighty eagle.

I was more than happy to pay 99 cents for the original Angry Birds. I was fully prepared to pay another 99 cents for a possible Angry Birds 2, and later on down the road Angry Birds 3, etc. But I'm not going to pay a single cent for something that pesters me to pay more money just to enjoy what I've already paid for.

I know I'm an anomaly, but I'll pay good money for good apps. I have no problems paying $40-60 for Wii U and 3DS games, and I would have no problem paying that kind of money for apps and games that were truly worth it. But I won't even touch a free app that hinders game progress until you buy IAPs. I'm talking about things like the Mighty Eagle, racing games that force you to either wait or spend money to keep playing, and things like that.

I know developers need to feed their families, and I'm more than happy to support them. But for every Monument Valley is 100 Real Racing 3's.

Find it hilarious that in the top 10 are YouTube and Google Maps. If you only read these forums you'd think everyone only used duckduckgo and Apple maps and boycotted YouTube as well.

It's pretty incredible to see how far Minecraft Pocket Edition has come in the past year. Expect it to be near the top again next year unless Microsoft screws it up. I hope it gets controller support.

I also want to say that some of these comments are ridiculous. You guys didn't have to download FB Messenger. You don't have to use FaceBook. Just say NOPE. SMS, iMessage, phone and email still exist. So does Twitter and other platforms. I haven't used Facebook since before Timelines (several years) and I have a successful career almost exclusively using and building stuff on the web every day. I also have a social life—it's called seeing people IRL. Try it, you might like it!

Best new app for me this year was Upword. It's got a different name now (though the app still pops up when you search for it, and within the app the name is the same), but it's a note-taker with a twist in that it also functions as a todo list. Duet is coming in at a close second (worked really well for me).

Best new jailbreaking apps were Springtomize 3 and Home Screen Designer. Not sure if they are new apps, but they were new to me.

While Heads Up is fun, the numerous spelling errors in the game are atrocious. We played the game recently and noticed at least four blatant misspellings within about five minutes. They need to hire some folks who can spell.

Why do people download the YouTube app? Do they want the same thing as YouTube in Safari except with ads?

I'm kinda scared because of how Minecraft 1.8 (release) for PC went. It's the first time I didn't update at all. And what happened to Steve? :(

Since Facebook uses the XMPP (a.k.a. Jabber) protocol, you could also use any old XMPP client. I don't get why Messages on iOS is so crippled compared to Messages on OS X, which supports multiple accounts including not just iMessage but XMPP (which includes Facebook and Google chat), AIM, and Yahoo!. On my Mac, I don't even have to deal with any Facebook software, web or native, to do messaging, and it should be that way on iOS too.

So much for all the claims that there was a massive pent-up demand for MS Office apps.

In the year that they were finally released, they got trounced.

Youtube :)

I think that's where i spend most of my time... while i'm not posting on MR.

I thought Spotify Music would be higher... ah well.

Yea... Go Netflix..

Facebook messenger only because I cannot use the Facebook app to talk in which I only have because two people I know cannot seem to use anything else that I use.

Twitter not included because it sucks. Who the hell uses Twitter, worst idea ever.

Every single day, it is my main online social interaction. Yeah, I thought it was pointless until around 2011 when I noticed how much it was used by some people. Far higher then Facebook on my charts.

The structure of gaming app or many apps in general are a bit annoying for that reason. However I am a bit cheap when it comes to games etc... if I will only pay ten dollars for a full PC game like Batman - Arkham City I am not going to pay much for a simple game app that will likely get boring in a day.

Sad that 2048, a rip off of Threes! made the list. Every one of you who played 2048 this year now have a duty to pay the original. C'mon - it's $2. That's half a big mac. You don't need the calories anyways. Also, it's made of pony meat.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/threes!/id779157948?mt=8

Big macs are too expensive, dollar menu or cheap junk food! :D

Stop being silly! I have messenger even though it's a crap app. I don't have the mail address or phone number for all my friends I connect with there so messenger is by far the easiest way to reach them. Doesn't make it a good app at all. All those damn stickers and **** - go away!

They don't make the app with just you in mind, you know?

Facebook Messenger, the perfect example of an app that's popular in terms of the sheer number of downloads (because Facebook didn't leave anyone the choice) but that has terrible ratings (which in my book should mean it doesn't deserve to be called a "most popular" app).

Also, it would be nice to have a most-popular list for new 2014 apps, many of these aren't new and that kind of bugs me.

So why did they download it? Did somebody put a gun to their head?

This.

All I heard about was how awful the messenger app was, and how the terms of use for that app were crazy in terms of FB tracking your location and data, so I never got it. Every now and then, I have to run over to my desktop PC to read a message, but for the most part, my friends and I don't use it. I have no idea why everyone else felt so compelled to get it -- there are a MILLION other messaging services.
