Top Five Apple Products of 2020

The Magic Keyboard before the M1? Did you fall down and hit your head right before making this post? :p

Haha - probably.

I realize the technological innovation that is the M1 (I bought a new Mac Mini a few weeks ago, love it) but the M1 wasn’t something I realized I wanted...it’s the Magic Keyboard that I’ve been waiting for for years ;)

Wonderful year to be an Apple fan, either way.

Glad to see you have recovered from your keyboard concussion.

I didn't plan on buying the M1 this soon. I was looking to early next year but we all know how that goes with Apple products. lol I am glad I didn't wait. it is excellent.

I don’t understand why AirPods Max are on this list...the 3.5mm Apple headphones deliver a much bigger and broader sound spectrum

3.5mm Apple headphones > AirPod Max > AirPod Pro > Airpods

I scientifically proved it to the Apple employees at my store and they did the test with the A10 iPod Touch that are used for checkouts & they immediately were able to hear the difference in sound spectrum...

Anyone who owns AirPods is a sucker & I know this is going to “trigger” some folks...but the truth shall set you free.

The people who aspire for AirPods are the same people who wear face diapers when driving down the road in a vehicle...the type of folks who think “emotionally” and are easily manipulated by marketing & social media...

Easy marks...
You wasted your time and the Apple employees time to make some silly point about a headphone jack... Wow I bet they were thinking just say whatever so he'll leave. I've worked in customer service and had to deal customers like this. You have to be polite to them so you don't get fired but in your head you're thinking get a life and go bother someone else 🤦‍♂️

Completely unbiased of course.
If you don't agree with their opinion it's easy to claim bias. MKBHD said they were the best over the ear headphones for Bluetooth and I don't see him being biased when it comes to Apple products. I get it some reviews have bias though. I wont deny that.

Imo the big hits this year are iPhone SE 2020 and the M1 Macs.

The $400 iPhone SE at the early days of the pandemic, whether coincidental or not, seemed like a genius business move, catching the competitors completely off guard.

The M1 Macs is obvious, smashing the Intel status quo and laptop chip performance.

The iPad Air and iPhone 12 have new design, but their increase in prices negates the excitement.

Magic keyboard for me. It’s the only one on this list I purchased, but it’s also well-made and expands the utility of my iPad in ways I didn’t expect.

In 2021 it will be M1 Macs, as my wife and I will both upgrade our desktop setups.

For me, the list would be (in no particular order): MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020 Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports), iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020), iPad Air (Fourth Generation), iPhone 12 Series, M1 Macs (all of them).

I think all of them are significant in their own right. Albeit the latter three are more significant redesigns, with the M1 Macs being, by far, the most significant release Apple has had in at least a decade.

But the final nail in the coffin for the butterfly keyboard (on the one 13" Intel MacBook Pro model that otherwise got a significant upgrade for still being Intel) was big, and the final Intel 27" iMac was big, especially for rivaling the much more expensive iMac Pro for the first time ever.

I wouldn't list the iPhone 12 if it wasn't for (a) the most significant body redesign since 2014, (b) Apple's first 5G phone, (c) their highest resolution 6.1" iPhones since that became a common iPhone screen size, and (d) the re-introduction of a physically small iPhone with modern guts for those that found the iPhone 6/6s/7/8/2nd-Gen-SE too large.

The fourth gen iPad Air was interesting for TouchID in on a post-home-button iPad and it certainly paves the way for Apple's lower-end offerings (standard iPad and iPad mini) to make the jump to the new design. If I could add a sixth, it'd be the 2nd generation iPhone SE, but it's much more a refresh to the iPhone 8 than it is a crazy product redesign. Still very welcome. Now, if only they had something for those of us iPhone Plus fans!

AirPods Max is up there too. But only tentatively. I'm not sure it's the kind of game-changer product worthy of this list. It's a very intriguing development though and if I had $550 lying around, I'd definitely be at least a little bit tempted.

Perhaps a better question would be "Which Apple product is most interesting?" as "best" depends on what your needs are.

Most interesting : the M1 sitting in the new Macs. These Macs are overall uninteresting but the M1 definitely make them stand out. So actually, it is only the M1 chip and its possibilities that are interesting this year.

I'm really excited about all of these new products, but the article mentions that the iPhone 12 design is based on the iPad Pro's fresh design with squared-off edges... it's a return to the iPhone 4 design. Why deny it here in MacRumors, a place where most of us know a lot about Apple's history? Call 'em as you see 'em.

because it’s not at all like the iPhone 4.

Though 2020 forced Apple to shift how it operates with many employees working from home for most of the year, Apple still managed to get a long list of new products out over the course of the last 12 months, refreshing most devices in its lineup and introducing new software.

In our latest YouTube video, we rounded up our top five products of 2020. Though there was a lot to choose from, there were several standouts like the M1 Macs, the iPhone 12 lineup, the iPad Air, the AirPods Max, and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro.

Magic Keyboard

It may seem like forever ago, but back in March 2020, Apple debuted new iPad Pro models with updated camera technology that includes a LiDAR Scanner for the first time, and alongside the new iPad Pro models, Apple introduced the Magic Keyboard.

Apple previously had a Smart Keyboard for its iPads, but the Magic Keyboard is the best Apple-designed iPad keyboard to date. It has a scissor mechanism keyboard that's similar to the keyboard used for Apple's Macs, and for the first time, there's a trackpad.

The trackpad makes the iPad more laptop-like than ever, and Apple's iPads are also now compatible with mice. The Magic Keyboard also has a nifty float design that allows the display to be adjusted, and it even works well in a lap.

On the downside, it's priced starting at $300, which is incredibly expensive for a keyboard, and it doesn't fold back so you can't use it as a standard case when you don't need the keyboard.

iPad Air

Introduced in September 2020, the iPad Air is Apple's first device that has a fullscreen display and Touch ID, with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the power button.

It also got a faster A14 chip before the A14 chip came to the iPhone 12 (even though Apple ultimately released the iPad Air and the iPhone 12 lineup at the same time), and it comes in a range of fresh colors that haven't been used before for an iPad.

Compared to prior-generation iPad Air models, it got an iPad Pro style-display with slimmed down bezels, and with its A14 chip, Touch ID, and new design, it's a solid deal at its $599 starting price.

iPhone 12

Apple released four new iPhones this year, including a 5.4-inch iPhone mini, its smallest iPhone in many years designed for those who are fans of smaller devices, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, the largest iPhone to date.

All of the new iPhones feature a fresh iPad Pro-style design with squared off edges that mark a departure from the rounded edges we've seen in the iPhone lineup since the iPhone 6.

The iPhones all feature OLED displays even at the low end, and have A14 chips that are incredibly fast. They all have great cameras, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the highest-end camera setup, though both Pro models feature the same LiDAR Scanner first introduced in the iPad Pro.

iPhone 12 models are also equipped with a ring of magnets inside that makes them compatible with a new technology called MagSafe, which is used for attaching chargers and magnetic accessories. With MagSafe, iPhones are able to charge wirelessly at up to 15W, an improvement over the prior 7.5W charging maximum.

M1 Macs

At WWDC in June, Apple confirmed that it was working on its own Apple silicon Arm-based chips, and in November, the first Apple silicon Macs were unveiled with "M1" chips. The M1 Macs are, without a doubt, the most exciting new products that Apple has come out with in the Mac lineup in years.

Prior to launch, no one knew quite what to expect from the M1 Macs, but Apple surprised everyone with downright incredible performance. When it comes to single-core CPU speeds, the M1 Macs beat out all other Macs on the market, and in multi-core performance, they're on par with some of Apple's higher-end desktop machines.

m1-chip-slide.jpg

Apple put its M1 chip in the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, and despite the speed gains introduced with these chips, these are the low-end Macs, with even more powerful chips expected for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, iMac, and other machines in 2021.

AirPods Max

We weren't expecting the AirPods Max until 2021, but Apple introduced them as a December surprise. The AirPods Max are Apple's first Apple-branded over-ear headphones, and they turned out to be more expensive than anyone expected at $549.

The AirPods Max feature aluminum ear cups, mesh ear cushions, and a mesh headband, and though they're heavier than many other over-ear headphone options on the market because of the premium build, most people have found them to be comfortable.

AirPods Max have all of the features that you expect from AirPods like quick pairing, fast device switching, and great range, plus Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive EQ, and Spatial Audio. They sound great, as they should for $549, and battery life is decent at 20 hours.

The one real downside is the Smart Case, which has a curious design, offers no protection, and is generally seen as one of the worst cases included with a set of premium headphones.

For me personally my top apple products after switching from n20u to 12pm this november is Iphone12pm l, airpods pro which is imho is the dopest earphones there is, apple watch series 6 which is I wear everywhere I go lol, magsafe accessories especially the leather x magsafe and lastly the AirPods Max which is for me try it or buy it first to experience the best headphone in the market today ☺️👏🥷

What an incredible year for Apple products, probably the best in a long time. Here are my top 3:

- M1 Macs, in my case the MacBook Air. The level of performance from this thin, silent and lightweight device is insane, and the battery life is game changing. I used mine for three days during Christmas without charging. Insane! I can't wait to see the new iMacs next year.

- AirPods Pro. Just got these for Christmas and they are just as impressive as the Original AirPods were back in 2016. I can't believe how good the noise cancellation is in such a tiny device. These are still a bigger engineering feat than the AirPods Max if you ask me.

- iPhone 12 (mini). A14 chip, 5G, OLED-displays and a great new design. Apple hit a home-run with the iPhone 12. It's probably my next purchase, but I'm still struggling to decide between the 5.4" mini and 6.1".

Runner up:

- iPad Pro. Got the iPad Pro in March and it's been a great experience with the Apple Pencil. The only slight negatives are Face ID which doesn't work as well as I expected on the iPad and also the Lightning/USB-C hassle right now that means I need to bring two chargers when traveling.

Here are my top five:
  1. M1 Mac family (I have an M1 MBP)
  2. iPhone 12 mini (both my wife and I want them, but we have XR and that will last us for a while)
  3. Apple Watch SE (want one, but haven't purchased... yet)
  4. iPad Air 4
  5. 2020 Intel Mac refreshes - Magic keyboard on MacBooks, and a newer iMac for people who still want Intel and/or can't wait for an AS iMac

AirPods Max over HomePod Mini? Hmm...idk.
Until they fix Siri the HomePod will never be very popular. If anything the regular HomePod had more potential with the proper marketing because it has quality sound. I’m sure the HomePod mini sounds okay but there’s only so much they can do with that small container. It’s basically a Siri box and with Siri being sort of mentally challenged I think this is going to be a hard sell for Apple. Don’t get me wrong I love Apple and I really wish they would do something to fix Siri. I would love to say hey Siri and she actually understands what I’m saying and does what I ask. I think it will happen one day or at least I hope so

because it’s not at all like the iPhone 4.
I'm not criticizing the design. I love it, and love the fact they are coming back to it. It just wasn't a design aesthetic introduced by the iPad Pro. Would also love to see it implemented on MacBooks and Apple Watch.

I'm quite surprised that the HomePod Mini did not make it. I definitely love mine, but that's just me.

AirPod Max? Really? I'm an Apple fan, but honestly I cannot see the value there. -$200+, then perhaps, but that price is just over the top.

So far I'm thrilled with my M1 Mac mini. I've been surprised at just how much faster it is compared with my previous setup (2018 i7 mini w/ Radeon RX 5700 XT eGPU). The M1 is about twice as fast at rendering Final Cut projects for less than half the price of my old system.
Yup I sold my 2018 Mac Mini, Vega 64 and enclosure for much MUCH more than what it cost to order a Mac Mini M1. Insane. Like it’s still blowing my mind I can upgrade my final cut performance significantly for LESS money.

How on earth can you include the Magic Keyboard in this list? Don’t get me wrong, it’s great in many ways and I use it all the time, but that material is HORRIBLE! Yeah it looks good new, but it simply can’t handle a few months of ordinary use without degrading terribly. Seriously, what were Apple thinking? And at that price? Either a massive oversight or absolute planned obsolescence; bad either way.
I’m interested to know what you disagree with in this post @Theyayarealivin - have you found the material the Smart Keyboard Folio and Magic Keyboard are made from is actually resilient and doesn’t get all wrinkly and crap looking after a few months?
