As odd as it might sound, I use the calculator App more than any other on my iPhone. But I didn't know some of these tips, so thanks for this article.

How so? Can you elaborate please? Asking out of genuine curiousity.

I don’t have a specific example, but in general, macOS handles larger equations/expressions than iOS. Or at least that’s my perception of it. It seems like the iOS spotlight search stops offering calculation results once you reach a certain length, or I’m entering some sort of expression or character that iOS doesn’t realize fits the description for a calculation.

Then again, it could definitely just be me.

Is it just me or was this interface “easier” to use in that the buttons were larger and more “discernible” for quick comprehension, while the current flat-design smaller circular buttons with less-distinctive (more minimalistic) coloring differentiating groups of buttons seem less ”easy/quick” to use?

As far as some of these “hidden” esoteric calculator tips that can only be found by random chance or purposeful (time-wasting) hunting, guessing, or googling, at least they’re consistent with iOS7-iOS13’s “minimum of help and interface affordances to the user” mantra!

For RPN on mac, I use the built-in calculator of macOS. You can switch it to RPN. For simple calculations, it works just fine.

For iPad, I use PCalc. It's of course much too big to use it full-screen, but you can use it on top of other screens by swiping it in from the right. In that mode, it works just great. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't show the stack, only the bottom (X) value.

I want a scientific calculator in vertical positioin with a huge screen. Decades ago this was possible on an a Ti-84 calculator, I think its really worth it to create the app for the 100 of million of iphone users today.

For us long time HP calculator users the lack of RPN makes it a no go. I willingly pay for 3rd party calculators with RPN.

True.

Apple should know better. I've never touched the Apple Calculators and installed a decent RPN Calc like i41CX or WP31S as soon as they where released.

Same holds true for MacOS.

According to Siri knowledge, it stands for Radio Philippines Network.

Which says a lot about engineering excellence at Apple nowadays.

Why isn't the Calculator app on iPad? 😳 The only alternative is to download a crappy/complex one with ads :S Or pay for 'standard' app...

The same goes for the Weather app...

Apple, please fix this in iOS/iPadOS 14, thanks! :D

Pcalc - been using it since before there was an iPhone. Provides what scientists need to get things done. Available on iPhone and iPad.

I think it's odd that on an iPhone you have a high-resolution, full-color touch display and the calculator app is mimicking a calculator design from the 70s that was mostly built around the limitation of having a 7 segment LCD for displaying numbers only. It would be so easy to just actually display the full calculation you are attempting to perform in mathematical notation, so you can actually check whether you typed in everything correctly etc. They literally already implemented something like that in their (strangely little-known) Grapher app on macOS.

I find the calculator interface so slow it’s almost unusable. It fails to register so many touches it’s a joke. I’m not even sure I can understand the issue because the touchscreen works so well everywhere else it can’t be that...

To be fair I also have issues typing in my lock code too fast and it failing to get all the digits then too so who knows. Wish they’d fix it though!

Exactly my experience as well with the calculator.......
