I already have USB-C cables scattered throughout my house. Due to the low durability of most cables, I have to replace Lightning cables all the time anyway… just for my phone, trackpad and keyboard. This is a weird argument unless the _only_ device in your house is an iPhone.

I find my USB-C cables fray less than the lightning ones - whilst the connector is somewhat better, the cables themselves are not good.

I honestly don't care about the connector on my phone. I am concerned tho that a political body is trying to pick technology standards. Also, how long does this order last? As in, 10 years from now will all phones still require USB-C? Will they have to vote again to rescind this? Is this a cycle we really want to get into the political sphere? Would this make something like mag-safe (which is brilliant) illegal?

That would be pretty sad for supposedly the premiere tech company.

I don’t understand how Apple got their product line to have such a mishmash of ports. For example. AirPods use lightning while Beats use USB-C. Why??

I'm convinced some of you chew on your cables like rats. I've had the same Lighting cables for years with zero issues.

It allows for portless devices. Otherwise, things like watches would need to add a port.
The exemption is only for devices that are too small for usb-c ports. Idk how or if Apple would argue the iPhone is too small for it.

It doesn't make MagSafe illegal, the current documentation as it stands says that innovation should decide what wireless standards should be in place.

These market standards exist at this point to reduce e-waste generated by having loads of different cables doing basically the same thing: power delivery and data communication.

Apple is in a unique position where they are using both technologies and charging for the license to build accessories which use their standard, whilst pushing different standards for everything else.

I seriously doubt this is feasible, or even possible, but a port that combines USB-C and MagSafe would be the bee's knees for portable gadgets.

What I mean is a port where there is a hole in the centre for USB-C, as normal, but surrounding that – likely in a slight depression – would be a MagSafe connection. Depending on your needs, or the situation you're in, you could choose which cable to use.

This would, of course, only be for power and not data, but I would love love love this for my AirPods and iPhone.

Again, I know this is probably not possible/feasible; I only offer it as fun speculation.

Apple products that currently feature Lightning but will have to adopt USB-C if newer models go on sale in 2025 or later to comply with the new law.
Only if it’s a charging port right?

Because, at least on the iPhone, it could become a data only port :)

Did the ruling mention headphones as well? I didn’t see that mentioned in the article. Hope this means the next AirPods Max will have USB-C, too.

EDIT: Never mind, im clearly having vision issues today. It’s literally in the first couple lines of the ruling lol. Oops!

The EU will fall behind as better connections can be introduced in other locales.
You say this while hilariously ignoring that Apple is choosing to use a connector that has long jumped the shark. You’re also viewing this incorrectly, as an antagonistic relationship. The EU isn’t trying to lock people into outdated technology (that would be Apple). I have no doubt that if 10 years from now a new higher performance connector is created, that the EU would listen to a consortium of tech companies asking to have the standard changed.

The EU may force a standard on to Apple but I have no doubt Apple will find a way to make sure that their USB-C cable is still 'tied' to the Apple product by means of some electronics in the plastic housing of the USB-C connector that Apple devices will see it as a legitimate Apple cable and therefore Apple will say that only Apple authorised USB-C cables should be used on their devices. If owners then start having charging/connection problems Apple support will just say 'are you using an Apple authorised USB-C cable'.

The same with the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. "It saves space", "Water resistance", etc... It was done 100000% to sell more airpods, plain and simple.
You could just buy a cheap wired headset with a lightning connector, or a tiny adapter for your existing headphones - which is exactly what I did. This in no way required anyone to buy AirPods. 10000000%

That sounds awful.

I hope Apple triples its budget for support and warranty claims when people call in and return their new phones because for some reason they won’t charge when plugged in. That’s a guaranteed cluster**** waiting to happen.

I wonder what your response will be when the EU or other government mandates something you disagree with and you think will interfere with your way of doing things.
Illinois tried to with the vaccination and face mask mandates, and I simply found a way to get around the vaccination mandate and never complied with the face mask or quarantine mandates.

And stop being innocent and defend Apple “this will stifle innovation”. No! Any consortium or corporation can come up with a better connector any time. Apple keeps Lightning around because they make money out of it, end of the story.
1. No, no corporation will be able to implement a better connector than USB-C (replace it) and see if costumers like it or not.
2. I don’t think anyone who has ever taken a look to Apple’s earning reports can say Lightning is more than peanuts to them (and they would gladly switch if costumers preferred USB-C, since that would greatly compensate the loss).
