The more I look at the new iMac, I have to say its iconic in its design, that colorful chin definitely differentiates it. I just don't need another Mac right now, and I wanna hold out to see if by Rev 3 they introduce a model with Face ID. Then there is the obvious Pro models that they will launch later this year. I suspect the 14/16 MacBook Pro's and 32 inch iMacs will be getting the second generation Apple Silicon to differentiate from the M1. The Mac Pro successor which will likely launch by WWDC 2022 will get the M3z.

I don’t see a 16 GB config for iMac.
Wait until the 30th and try configuring then.
9to5 Mac has a poll on that
What colored 24-inch iMac are you planning to buy?
33.23% not gong to buy 24 inch iMac
20.82% Blue
15.91% Silver
09.69% Green
06.70% Yellow
06.58% Orange
05.30% Purple
01.77% Pink

So your more than welcome to any pink 24" iMac. :D
Also doesn't bode well for the violet iPhone color.
With the second generation of iMacs after orange and bondi blue, Apple originally forced retailers to order iMacs in sets. As a result, certain colors often sold for big discounts. I hope they don't repeat the same thing this time or even Apple will be offering big discounts on the pink.

It’s depressing to see Apple reduced to making luggage tags, watch straps, TV remotes and iMacs that look like something from Fisher Price. Very sad.
Let’s bring back the colours and start being more experimental. Enough of this black / space grey / silver era.

Thank you very much. :)

All of a sudden it's one size fits all when it comes to the M1.
Why spend $1700 for an M1 iMac or over $1500 for an M1 iPad or $1700 for an M1 MacBook Pro?
When you get the SAME EXACT PERFORMANCE from any M1 product you buy?
Save yourself LOTS of money and buy an M1 Mac mini.
Because no matter which M1 machine you choose they will all have the same performance.
Minus the crippled iMac with 1 GPU core disabled on the M1. (DIRTY way to get people to spend more money.)
Yes, save lots of money with a Mac Mini. Enjoy typing on the keyboard that it doesn't have, using the mouse or trackpad that it doesn't have, enjoy the beautiful 4,480 x 2,520 pixel screen that it doesn't have.

And do you think it makes you look clever calling the 7GPU core iMac "crippled", especially when it's not an iMac, but an MBA? Why not call it "retarted"? Or "spastic"?

I can just see that. 6'6" guy buys a pink iMac. Little man with little man syndrome says "Oh, look at him, pink is for girls! You must be a girl!". Big guy picks him up with one hand and removes him from the room. And it's not the door that hits him on the way out, but a big foot.

not to mention a sexy power brick, striking white bezel, and a handful of dongles so you can connect USB-A, SD cards, HDMI, etc to your brand new "all-in-one" computer! :)
So to you a 10 port USB hub is a "handful of dongles"? Interesting view of the world.

I can see Tim Cook up on stage next year talking about their new updated AirTag improved design - with a hole now... cut to a video of AirTags on assembly line with holes being drilled into them... standing ovation from crowd!
I'd definitely join crowd if he did. I'd immediately replace my Tiles if the AirTages could directly attach to a key ring or similar device. I don't want the added expense or BULK of having to buy a fob to attach the AirTag.

Maybe he has small hands like the guy the the Burger King commercials?

and it isn’t that hard to connect to USBC these days anyway. You don’t have to replace peripherals, just cables. Get USBC-A or whatever and keep going.

of course if you connect more than 4 devices to you MB pro, you need a hub - which kind of covers the dongle situation.

I am normally fast to speak to the combined value of iMacs for the same reasons (especially the 5K screen which is hard to come by at that pixel density) the argument sort of depends on what you're coming from: if you already have had a mini or laptop and already have a spare display of high quality (Ultra-fine or otherwise) and already own keyboard/trackpad/mouse accessories then the Mini alone can still make a lot of sense.

But if starting from scratch (or a completely different type of product, like upgrading a MacBook you plan to sell) then the combined value an iMac offers is great for the quality of the package.

So, this just ran cross my mind while reading some articles about the M1 iPad Pro. Its very much possible as Apple tries to differentiate product lines such as the iPad Pro, iPhone Pro and soon iMac Pro, that Apple Silicon might also end up in the high end iPhone Pro line just like the iPad Pro M1. Apple will then leave the A Series for the cheaper models such as the Mini and non Pro.

Apple lost Jony Ive

2 years on, iPhone 12 Pro is the fugliest iPhone ever made. I bought a used 11 Pro instead because the 12 is so ugly.

More colors are fine per se, but the whole pastel color scheme combined with the industrial hard edge shapes makes me think of a sex toy.

Not sure why exactly, i don't use sex toys, but it has this strange feeling to it.

Hit with ugly stick now:
iPhone line (mini is kinda OK, all the others fuuuugly)
iPad pro line
iMac line

Still looking good (because unchanged design)
MacBook Air / Pro, iMac Pro
iPad Air

Is there any difference between an iPhone 12 Pro and the latest Samsung whatever, or Huawei whatever? Nope. Not really. The iPhone is still technically more advanced and smaller and thinner but as design goes - urgh. That being said the S20 is probably also the ugliest Samsung phone I've ever seen. Looks like a turd with 6 eyes.

Ironically the 7GPU iMac is likely to be by virtue of chips failing testing at 8GPU.These would otherwise be discarded as I don't believe they would have commissioned 8GPU 8 core, then commission 7GPU, 8 core. It wouldn't make sense.

I'm holding off buying until M2 where I expect to see a strategic and very meaningful computing gain, although I hope that the M2 is not restricted to the larger monitor, as I don't need the larger monitor and a 24in. works for my company.

Still very interesting times at Apple where its battle with Facebook received poor BBC coverage again, where the BBC kept leading with Apple allows its own software access to users data, but not others, but where there is obviously a need to access user data if you are updating their core system software! There is no need for Facebook or others!

You know what Freud says about thinking about sex toys? I do think they look a bit like toys, but then look back, and see how the original e-mac/iMac revolutionised our idea of style for worktop computers.

This is where Apple deviated from Steve Jobs vision, as he was more about style and substance, and Apple as we know it would not exist today without his input on NeXT after Apple's thinking of getting Pepsico employee involved instead of Steve.

the fact that you think it's perfectly acceptable to need a hub for a new all-in-one speaks volumes.
A computer with ports is a hub! In fact iMac design would be better off with all its ports off of the main monitor unit, being more accessible and just as discrete. The monitor lifts up, so ideally ports would be embedded in the stand with still just one power cable needed, keeping the design tidy. That's why an ethernet cable in a power brick is such a bad idea for so many reasons.

So many complainants on this bb, remark about having to have this many ports, or cables, much of the comment not making sense, as if you have ports, presumably you have cables to serve the port?

No one needs multiple dongles when you can get a multi function hub.

Perhaps Apple will do it for us, have NO ports on the main monitor unit, but have multifunction ports including card reader, either as a detachable hub from the upstaged being discrete and allowing access by just moving up the monitor and where the hub can be moved to another position depending on where user wants it.

if you are going to do something stupid like having ethernet embedded inside same cable as power supply, Apple would be better off negating the need for dongles, having all ports off main unit in a detachable hub on the upstaged which may conceivably also remove the chin

Interesting the assumptions some are making about the forthcoming larger iMacs. It mightn’t be what is assumed/expected either.

This new iMac design is growing on me. 16GB RAM with 512 or 1TB SSD might seem limiting, but in tandem with the MI it should outperform my 32GB with i7-2600s and Samsung Evo 500GB SSD in my 2011 21.5. I would likely go with Silver, but I do like the Green. Size wise the new 24in. is only marginally bigger than my 2011 being about 3/4 in. wider and about 3/8 in. taller yet having about 20 percent more display—nice.

Still, since I’m not desperate for a new computer I can afford to wait to see what the larger iMac will have to offer.

I bit the bullet

I bought an M1 Mac mini Refurb 512GB disk 8GB Ram $759 off the APPLE web site.

I wanted 1 for the house and also use it in my car.

I don’t mean this as a criticism of you, each to their own and all that, but reading your post makes be so thankful that what a device looks like isn’t important to me.

Thinner and faster is all very well, but it gets pretty boring after a while. Yes the new iMac looks lovely, but does it add any function or revolution to the product? Not really. How about this instead?

^^ Unnecessary complication. Apple was never going to go touchscreen on the iMac.

Thinner not only means less weight, but also less materiel used in making the device. There is no reason whatsoever for a desktop computer, or any computer (be it laptop, tablet or phone) to be physically bulkier than it needs to be.

It is interesting how such small differences can loom so large in some people’s eyes. There is really little difference in design of the iPhone 11 and the 12. The iMac 24in. is not radically different than the 21.5 it replaces—it’s the same essential concept but with different detail.

I don’t mean to make light of such differences. I see similar things in the evolution of automotive design. There are design cues presently in vogue that drive me crazy. Pointless oversized grilles and massive infotainment displays mounted on dashboards. I also take issue with needlessly oversized fullsize pickups. And a lot of contemporary designs are just plain bad compared to previous designs from the same manufacturers.

Now back to the subject at hand...

In some cases you do have to replace the peripherals, but yes, in many cases you can simply swap the cables and get on with it. What I don't understand is their new decision to cut down the ports to as few as possible. Two USBCs just aren't enough unless you're willing to lug around a big multi-port dongle. And buy 2-3 of those so you'll have one at work, one at home and one with you when going to clients because nobody wants to disconnect half a dozen cables every single time - or realize they left their only dongle behind and can't do anything for a while.

Bought the new MBPro, found out it only has two ports and sent it back right away. Yes, I probably should've checked but I didn't think they'd cripple the Pro that badly. I just love having two ports on each side and being able to connect the power cable to the side where it fits best regardless of where I am. I also use more than 2 ports most of the time - camera/drone/card reader, external disk, power and sometimes something extra. I seriously doubt even M1 devices would allow me to work all day with photos/videos without having to charge so I don't see the need for 4 ports going away any time soon. Anyone suggesting dongles can try to juggle all of the above on their lap, wondering why they got disconnected halfway through the transfer. It's happened so many times it's not even funny anymore.

What comes to the new "My First Little Pony iMac" series, it's cute they got a new series for the kids. I'm still waiting for the grown up version of that. And I'm not just talking about the colors, 24" doesn't work for me either. Don't get me wrong: I know many are happily buying those and possibly even liking the colors. I'm just not one of them.

One big problem with many iMacs has been heat. The smaller you make the case, the more you have to work around heat issues in serious use. This obviously doesn't apply if your main use is to watch Teletubbies from youtube or something like that. For any more serious work you want the computer to be as capable as possible, regardless of how long or hard you push it. Nobody wants their computer to slow down due to overheating and poor form-over-function design.

Having enough ports is another thing I require in my device, I don't want to HAVE to have a dongle hanging out of it just because it cannot handle even basic work. I can live with 4 usb-c, but not with anything less than that. If the M1 can't handle it, I'll just wait for M2, M3, M5 or something that can. Anything less than that complicates my life too much. And yes, I have several large dongles I lug around, but that's simply because I need HDMI, LAN, card reader and old USB-A ports often enough to justify it. I don't want that cable hell on my desktop. Again, you or someone else may not see that as a problem. That's just fine. There's an iMac for you in the store. I'll still be waiting for mine.
