How is it different than installing Mac apps from outside the Mac App Store? MacOS has security settings that allow you to configure if Mac should allow apps downloaded from App Store, App Store and identified developers, or override them to install any app. Is he now saying that Macs are less secure because of that?
That is almost literally what they said WRT safety.
My biggest issue w/ the App Store is that it pushes companies to resort to a subscription model for everything because of the fostered race to the bottom on pricing.

the EU should make sideloading mandatory (at least for devices sold in the EU).
The Apple App Store is clearly a monopolistic store on the iOS platform.

Mrs Vestager, please hand out another 10 Billion € fine.
People keep using the word "monopoly" referring to Apple's control of their own App Store.
"A monopoly is a dominant position of an industry or a sector by one company, to the point of excluding all other viable competitors."
Now, maybe they are confusing and conflating the term with "anti-competitive behavior", which is "any fraudulent, deceptive, or dishonest trade practice that is prohibited by statute, regulation, or the Common Law."

I'm in favor of side loading of iOS apps, both on iOS devices & on M1 Macs !

I believe Apple consumers should have choices !

Apple simply needs to update Xcode to add support for the same Notary service that Apple currently offers for macOS apps, & make slight changes to macOS & iOS to enable installing of such apps.

Some of Apple's arguments against Sideloading are legit, but this America, & we just passed Veterans Day here.

I'm NOT at all in favor of Apple's position !

Also, have said it before & will say it again, I do NOT believe Apple is against Sideloading in General, ONLY that they are against Sideloading of Game Apps that would prevent them from generating that 70% of App Store Revenue from less than 10% of App Store consumers !

Tim needs to move forward with Sideloading of NON-Game iOS Apps, & battle it out with the Game App companies as a separate issue !

Also, looking forward to Dec 9th :)

I'm also against consumer getting scammed by scammers deceiving consumers by getting them to side load apps from unverified sources and people blaming consumers for "being stupid".

Non-tech savvy people (and tech savvy people can also have a lapse of judgement) should not be subjected to these kinds of scams.

I don't know what does this have anything to do with being American.

The resolution is simple. If Apple charges too much ... Google will lower their costs so developers flock to Android development leaving Apple with no apps.

Ultimately, Tim Cook is right ... consumers do have a choice. Get Android. Problem solved. Sideload to your hearts delight. Competition will reveal which solution is best.

Now they have Apple devices I rarely ever get called
This is the same experience I have. I was fielding several phone calls every week when my family members were using Windows and Android. Now I'm down to under a couple a month.

Is there a way to revert back to iOS 14 if you didn’t make a backup before you ‘upgraded’? I’ve never had the problem of hating a release until now. I actually considered buying a new phone with 14 stilll on it.

For all those folks defending Apple's "it's about the safety and security of our users" BS regarding, well, pretty much anything:

When they testified under oath that macOS security is currently unacceptably awful I guess they were being more honest than I gave them credit for.

There’s no reason to fire Tim Cook. He’s done a great job. Apple is the best in the business.

The Apple Swift / UIKit library is prime for anyone to run with it. SceneKit, AVKit, SpriteKit, MapKit, etc.

Apple should let the younger folks work with Xcode because it’s so simple. And whatever they create, they create.

the worst ide lol.

Well, considering you can't sideload on iOS, and have never been able to, but you can sideload on Android and have always been able to, we don't have to wait for anything to be revealed, we simply have to look at the status quo.

Given Android's market share relative to iOS, I'd say we have our answer*?

(*but not really, because the number of people who sideload on Android is very small, and the number who chose the platform for that specific capability is likely much smaller yet)

Tim Cook: Users Who Want to Sideload Apps Can Use Android

Or jailbreak? ;)

Meh. I reckon the iPhone has all the functionality I need now anyway. Can't say I want the sorta apps that I used to sideload using jailbreaks as Apple's delivered all the features I want/need (gradually). I like the idea of the freedom but can't see a use for it. Previously I got things like bluetooth GPS capability (for my iPod touch), offline maps, tethering, multitasking, slide-down options menus and emulators. I now have this functionality natively and have started collecting the consoles I wanted to emulate (there's only 3 or 4) because the real deal works better anyway.

TBH I'm using less and less apps on my iPhone these days as even the store ones are getting a bit spammie. Most seem to be 'app' versions of a website that I can already access. That or they're ads with an app attached to them... or... (essentially) spyware. Apps are becoming pretty rubbish IMO.

Yes... I am sure the board would totally get rid of the CEO that has turned the company into a $2 Trillion company.
When Tim Cook took over, Apple was the largest company in the world and Microsoft was the fifth largest.

In the time since, Apple has grown 7x while Microsoft has grown 13x, making Microsoft the largest company in the world.

In the same period, Tesla grew 140x. Google grew 10x, Amazon grew 15x, Facebook grew 11x, and Netflix grew 47x.

Apple’s performance over this time period hasn’t been great.

please, please, I want a bigger bezel if I can avoid a notch! bezel is fine! a 720p webcam is fine! a notch is not!

iOS needs a “pro mode” which allows experienced users to do the sort of things that android allows (ie automate every function of your phone using tasker or macrodroid)

Growth of what? revenue didn't grow 7 times in the last ten years. the stock price has become meaningless because Apple pumped billions in stock buybacks, $85.5 billion in 2021 alone.

That is the issue, what is the market, in the market for iOS apps Apple has a monopoly. You can't distribute apps for iOS without being on the App Store and follow their rules and hope they interpret the rules always the same way, so that you can publish your app. And since being on iOS is important because it is a big platform and a platform on which people are more likely to spend money on apps. So yeah, Apple has a monopoly on that market. And needs to be regulated. This means (for me) that rules Apple impose on developers must be valid for all, including Apple. Fees must be transparent and also be imposed on all, including Apple. And before you ask, this is also true for the Google Play Store and many other app stores on other platforms.

Apple's self-serving policies have Cook circling the drain. No longer world's most valuable company. Major contributor to the world electronic shortage with millions of devices locked unnecessarily.
AAPL is up 1000% since Tim assumed the position of CEO.

It’s up 125% in the last two years.

If that kind of performance is circling the drain then then I’d love to know what’s successful.

I think the idea of side loading is cool, the way it’s cool to chat on mIRC.

But what is there to side load on iOS?

OK, you hacked an .IPA and got 10_000 free gems. The game was free to play already…

And to someone’s comment earlier, at that point it’s just jailbreaking.
