Don't fear. There will absolutely be a new iPod touch soon (probably October) for several reasons. The noncontract and child/youth market is still significant for Apple, and gets users hooked on iOS early. The new graphical and code improvements in iOS only incentivizes Apple to use the iPod Touch as their flagship model for handheld gaming, where users don't have to share a battery with a phone.

Yep, iTouch is still the entry-level drug of choice that Apple markets to kids and younger teens (older teens tend to ask for iPhones).

Plus, I have to question the people that say the Apple Watch will cannibalize sales of future iPod touches. Say what?? They are totally different things!

The iPod touch is marketed to kids and casual mobile gamers, and occasionally people who want to have App Store features (like iPhone) but not wanting the phone contract. Some mobile gadget nerds (who already have iPhones) will use the iPod touch as a 2nd device to simply use as their music player and as a repository for all their music (rather than cluttering their iPhone with all those albums).

The Apple Watch is marketed to rich affluent people who have hundreds of dollars to spare. Like rich rappers like Kanye West and celebs like Kim Kardashian who will absolutely get the Gold Edition of the Apple Watch. They don't care that it costs over $1200. It's a status symbol for them, and they can afford it easily, that's all that matters to them.

The iPod touch is also huge with app developers. Several colleges that offer iOS programming courses buy iPod Touches in bulk for students to load code on.

The reason no iPod Touch was announced today was likely because with TWO different iPhone models being added today, Apple is using all of its manufacturing power on the new iPhones to meet pre-order demand.

There's also people like me. I hate phones, hate them with a passion and I hate cell phones even more. I have a cheap flip phone that I keep in the car in case of emergency but I've had it for 3 years buy a prepaid that lasts the year for $100 for 100 minutes and I've accumulated 279 minutes.

But I want a iPod so I can listen to music/audiobooks when I'm working. There is no way that I would buy a iPhone.

I know I'm the minority with my cell phone hate but there are people like me.

I'm with you. i'm a flip phone person. i hardly talk on the phone and i refuse to spend a bunch of money just on the phone part. i always carry an iPod touch around with the flip phone. i'm ready to buy a 5.5 iPod touch . if they don't come out with one in that size then i'm getting an updated iPad mini

I am the same way, I have basically no friends so a phone is not necessary for me unless it's an emergency. In that case yes I do have a phone but it's a page plus phone which I spend $30 per YEAR on service for. I have tons of minutes too, more than I will ever use and they don't expire as long as I pay $10 every 4 months.

The ideal for me would be a touch where you could buy cellular and data access by the day, say buy a day pass for $1.99 use it as much as you want that day. Since there are about 5 days a year or less when I would want cell and data everywhere. This would be perfect, but it's totally not worth a $2000 or more contract to get data for those 5 days a year when I might actually need it. I will probably NEVER be in a position in my life where I can afford an iPhone on a contract unless a future job I may hold pays for it for me...

I have an Android phone, but I want to play iOS games and have access to the other software. That's why I have an iPod Touch.

I've carefully watched for iPod Touch rumors, especially as the 4G becomes outdated. The 5G was a joke of an upgrade, considering the cost, so I waited. And I know a LARGE amount of people have, as well.

The lack of sales for the latest iPod Touch are because it wasn't a big enough reason to upgrade and it's already outdated. There's a huge pent up demand for a new device.

Because Apple didn't show off the iPad, as expected, it makes sense that next month, when they update that, to work with the Watch as well, that the iPod Touch will be mentioned, if not simply to highlight the predictable success of the iPhone 6 sales. "It's sold a kajillion units. And now we'd like to introduce the iPod Touch 6 to bring even more users up to speed."

iPod touch 5 is fine for me, I have no issues with the screen size or how it runs but I do have problems with the battery and how crappy it is and how the battery life gets considerably shorter after only 1 and a half years of use. I am currently charging 2-3 times a day even after running the battery totally flat.

Oh and SMS doesn't work for me, I have a lot of international friends and I am on the Canadian border which means I have friends from Canada too. We can't text because it would be very expensive to do that so we use Facebook messenger to communicate. The touch works perfectly for this.

I wouldn't surprised if we saw an iPod Touch Plus. Basically a 5.5" WiFi-only device that is perfect for gaming and consuming media. It would be one hot seller!

No, I don't think it would. I mean I'd get it but. Ehhh. The Mini would suffer. And That would be pricy.....

I'd like to see an iPod touch update. I use my current iPod touch as a travel camera. I never got an iphone. I travel too much and don't like the contract thing. And to buy an unlocked iphone is kinda pricey. I do have an iPad mini for surfing the net and blogging. But I'd love to see an iPod touch 6 with an 8 mp camera and faster processor to future proof it.

An iPod touch the size of an iphone 6 would be sweet. I doubt they'd make one the size of the iphone 6 plus...cause then you're getting close to iPad mini size.

I've read some strong rumors that an updated iPod touch will be announced along side new iPads this October. And that the iPod touch may be similar in size to the 4.7" iPhone 6. That'd be cool. Hoping its true. Faster chip and better camera would be nice too. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'd love to see this Apple line up:

Iphone 6
Iphone 6 Plus
iPod Touch 6 (with 4.7" screen)
iPod Touch 6 Plus (with 5.5" screen)
IPad Mini
IPad Air
Ipad Pro (rumored 12" ipad with laptop features)

That would pretty much cover all bases. :)

Could you please post the sources of strong rumors of a Touch 6. As far as I know, the only mention was from a site (2 weeks ago) that has always been wrong in all of it's predictions.

It's an overall buzz. Sources from many places over the Internet. A rumor is a rumor. It's all speculation until proven true. Even the so called reputable rumor sites get it wrong. I'm just saying that there is chatter out there about an iPod touch 6 being announced in October along with new iPads. It may or may not happen.

I hope it does.

I hope so too but, there has been no chatter (except people saying that they want one).

There is chatter. If you do your own due diligence. There is no definitive proof. No pictures or leaks. But there is more than just people wishing. If you search the net...there is talk...about this being a real possibility. Again...it's up to you if you believe it or not. But I've seen enough to think it may be true.

Guess we will find out in a month.

The fact the Apple website still shows iOS 7 for this (like the iPads) suggests that they might be making a new iPod Touch. It could launch with the Apple Watch if not in October.

I hope they don't do away with the ipod touch. I recently purchased a 64GB 5th gen. I still have 30 gig available but still a 16gb nano would not hold my music, audio books, and movies.

Why you didn't provide a single link?

We'' know by Oct 21st because if it doesn't get announced during the Ipad event its not happenning

The iPod Touch is still an incredible product that is unapologetically aloominium in a unique quality unheard of in a music player. It is functionally and aesthetically pleasing to those who want all the revolutionary features of Apple's amazing iPhone without the phone. Long live the iPod!

Some analyst have posted that there will not be an iPad event in October (lack of material to justify an event). Instead, the updated iPads will show up in the Apple store in October.

I hope the don't kill it... 6G it's useful more than ever for those who doesn't want to sign a contract with a creedy and greedy telephone company
