You CAN train Touch ID to be better than the initial registration. Go into the Touch ID settings screen (where fingers are listed or added), and repeatedly touch the sensor with an already registered finger. The slot for that finger will flash gray. You can greatly improve reliability by building a detailed map of the finger with dozens of touches of the same finger from different angles and positions.

Great tip

Mine seemed to work perfectly at first but it wouldnt work at all the night before last.

I washed my hands, wiped the home button and unregistered my fingerprints but it wouldn't even let me register them again. Kept saying try another finger, which I tried and it still didn't work. Eventually it did and managed to register the same thumbs twice but it was still having trouble recognising me. I also tried registering it by holding my thumb head on and by holding it the way I would naturally, didn't make a difference.

The next morning it worked perfectly for a few hours then it started playing up again. Same thing this morning, it worked for a while and now it's having trouble.

Exact same thing happening to me...really hoping its a hardware issue thats replaceable, and not a software issue thats stuck somehow in my icloud backup.

I restored the phone via iTunes, and then restored the iCloud backup from the 'Hello' set up screens the night before this started happening (at the time of the backup, there were no issues whatsoever). I also have Yosemite Public Beta 4, and downloaded the new beta of iTunes the same night that I did the restore.

Did your situation match this at all? Has your replacement been working perfectly throughout the day today?

I always set my phones up as new. My Touch ID has been working flawlessly with the new phone. Does your home button feel weird?

Are you sure this is correct? I thought the gray flashing was just to show you which finger was registered at that slot (if you didn't label it right). How do you know that this procedure "trains" touch ID further. I haven't found that in the documentation. Can you point to a link or explain how you know this?

I also think the flashing is just intended to show which finger is registered in which slot, but I'd be interested to know if there's any basis to what was said earlier.

either your phone is broken or your fingerprint is broken.
only 1 possible fix i see in this scenario.....

I and others have seen marked improvement in TouchID response using this method.

As a part of my job I have to visit sites/secure areas weekly that use fingerprint scanners for entry and it usually takes 3-5 attempts to get the scanner to recognize my fingers. I've had a skin condition since the 5th grade that causes small bubbles to form in my skin (related to allergies) and these cause skin to peel when the bubbles surface and break.

By comparison, albeit I've only had the iPhone for a week now, the TouchID sensor has worked 100% of the time, from multiple angles. I'm truly amazed at just how well it works and hope to see this incorporated in laptops and desktop accessories for authentication into computers.

Tonight my TouchID failed. I tried adding a 2nd identical thumb print but it still wouldn't register. I deleted my already added two thumb prints (both left and right) in the hope that it'd work that way, but no success.

Didn't have a problem at all since launch until tonight. Now I feel gutted. And I was going to go to my Apple store on Saturday to get Applecare+. I don't know what I should do now :(

It comes with a 1 year warranty for manufacturer defects. Take it in to the Apple Store. If there's an issue, they'll replace it.

Do you have it updated to 8.0.2? I had mine appear to fail as well (this was on stock 8.0.0) but the update cured it.

i have this same condition but my Touch ID doesn't really work much at all. Managed to register one finger that seems to work consistently. None of my others do.

Thank you both for your replies :)

Yeah, it's just that I hate problems in tech - especially when I take extra-care for a product :(

Indeed, it was updated to 8.0.2 one or two days after that patch was released. I don't know why it should be a problem now. I was able to get a thumbprint again (after many attempts), but it has since been a bit of a hit and miss almost 24hrs since the problem first surfaced.

Two possibilities - and I'm unsure if these have any bearing -

1) Last night when the problem first surfaced, I went to the Healthkit app and decided to look at the "Month" option of distances run/walked. I received a big crash for some reason. Couldn't go back to home screen etc. Everything froze. Had to hard reset the phone and that is when the problem became overwhelmingly apparent.

2) About two days ago, I was mucking around on that fish aquarium game, and I went through a loop to enact real money transactions to fully unlock the game (so touchid - password, touchid - password etc etc).

Would either of these have had an effect I wonder?

For most of today whilst at work etc, touchid ran pretty much as expected, but it has again now resurfaced :/

Thanks again :)
