Have you actually done this, or is it a concept you have yet to try out? I'm seeing two major problems here. 1. How can you see the iPad screen to see what you are doing from across the room? I'm not talking about the typing itself, but you will need to see, for instance, if you are typing your words into the correct position on screen. 2. There are lots of system control actions on the iPad that can't be done from the keyboard. It's the main reason why I have stopped using the Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad -- it got too annoying moving my hand constantly from the keyboard to the iPad screen to do something or other that couldn't be done from the keyboard. It ended up being faster just to use the on-screen keyboard. Not to mention it's one less thing to carry. Not saying this definitely won't work for you, but if you do make it work, I'll be interested in hearing how you get around the two problem points I'm seeing.
I had intended to answer this earlier on in the day, but tapatalk crashed and chewed up my reply just as I was about to post it.
1) The idea is that my ipad is hooked up to the smartboard, so it will project whatever is on its screen onto the board. For simple tasks like typing assignment answers, I shouldn't need too much control, just basic commands like enter (to go to the next line).
Yes, I likely won't be doing any alt-tabbing when I am half a room away though. Air-sketch is tempting, but after reading its review, the app seems quite limited, it is fairly costly for what it does, and my school's wifi is pretty weak and blocks out dropbox...
2) You are right, which is why I had fairly straightforward tasks in mind. For instance, when I am doing a class-dictated writing activity in class, I can sit in front, and type with the bluetooth keyboard on my lap, while the ipad is resting on my desk some distance away, with pages open. I plan to rely on the arrow keys to move around as necessary.
It sounds a lot more cumbersome than using the laptop's trackpad, but I have issues with the cursor randomly jumping all over the place (I suspect it is due to a faulty or over-sensitive touchpad, but many of my colleagues are also experiencing similar issues, so I guess it is something I need to live with).
Also, I still can't seem to get the hang of the virtual keyboard. I can type comfortably and quickly enough on it, but I will still settle for a physical keyboard any day, even if it adds to the bulk of my ipad.
However, all these remains largely theoretical at the moment, as I have not had the opportunity to test this out yet.
