i can almost rival my physical keyboard typing speed on my ipad in landscape mode, only thing is i sometimes miss a letter, and going back to correct the two or three mistakes i make per sentence usually takes me quite a while. in general though, i'm definitely starting to like typing on this thing.

couldnt imagine myself typing more than just notes or short-ish posts with this thing though, wouldnt use it to write an essay or a long email unless i absolutely have to. might get a bluetooth keyboard for his thing for when im travelling. thought i wouldnt need one since i have a laptop i intended to take with me when abroad, though i just recently picked the thing up and noticed how damn heavy it is, and all of a sudden, my ipad seemed the obvious option to take with me in its stead.

Don't you hate that? You get used to the weight of the laptop and think its light and its no big deal. Then you deal with the iPad, and all of a sudden your laptop weighs 2 tons, lol. Damn iPad, making laptops feel obese since 2010.

absolutely. my macbook pro was my pride back in the day, gives me cramps just to hold it nowadays.. cant believe i used to lug it around, shyt.

Am i the only one who prefers the portrait mode? I can write on it faster then on a keyboard and i type really fast on the keyboard.

Have you actually done this, or is it a concept you have yet to try out? I'm seeing two major problems here. 1. How can you see the iPad screen to see what you are doing from across the room? I'm not talking about the typing itself, but you will need to see, for instance, if you are typing your words into the correct position on screen. 2. There are lots of system control actions on the iPad that can't be done from the keyboard. It's the main reason why I have stopped using the Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad -- it got too annoying moving my hand constantly from the keyboard to the iPad screen to do something or other that couldn't be done from the keyboard. It ended up being faster just to use the on-screen keyboard. Not to mention it's one less thing to carry. Not saying this definitely won't work for you, but if you do make it work, I'll be interested in hearing how you get around the two problem points I'm seeing.

I had intended to answer this earlier on in the day, but tapatalk crashed and chewed up my reply just as I was about to post it.

1) The idea is that my ipad is hooked up to the smartboard, so it will project whatever is on its screen onto the board. For simple tasks like typing assignment answers, I shouldn't need too much control, just basic commands like enter (to go to the next line).

Yes, I likely won't be doing any alt-tabbing when I am half a room away though. Air-sketch is tempting, but after reading its review, the app seems quite limited, it is fairly costly for what it does, and my school's wifi is pretty weak and blocks out dropbox...:(

2) You are right, which is why I had fairly straightforward tasks in mind. For instance, when I am doing a class-dictated writing activity in class, I can sit in front, and type with the bluetooth keyboard on my lap, while the ipad is resting on my desk some distance away, with pages open. I plan to rely on the arrow keys to move around as necessary.

It sounds a lot more cumbersome than using the laptop's trackpad, but I have issues with the cursor randomly jumping all over the place (I suspect it is due to a faulty or over-sensitive touchpad, but many of my colleagues are also experiencing similar issues, so I guess it is something I need to live with).

Also, I still can't seem to get the hang of the virtual keyboard. I can type comfortably and quickly enough on it, but I will still settle for a physical keyboard any day, even if it adds to the bulk of my ipad. :p

However, all these remains largely theoretical at the moment, as I have not had the opportunity to test this out yet. :p

Oh, I just hate it when that happens! Thank you for taking the time to repost this!

I take it the iPad connects to the smartboard with a cable? We just recently got an AppleTV, and tried mirroring the iPad on our big screen TV. I'm convinced that's the best way to project the iPad on a screen -- it's so simple to set up, and you can just wander the room with the iPad in your hand while manipulating stuff that then gets shown on the screen. I know getting the funds for more equipment isn't always feasible, but if I were trying to use the iPad in a class, that would be my holy grail. In the meanwhile, do keep me updated on how your trial works out. But I have to say, I'm typing this on my iPad right now, and at one point had to dismiss an autocorrect suggestion, which reminded me, that was one of the more annoying part of trying to use the iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard. There you are, typing away on the Bluetooth, then all of a sudden, there's a autocorrect popup, and you have to tap the tiny "x" on screen to get rid of it, totally breaking your rhythm. :( Anyway, good luck with your iPad usage trial!

Yes. I have actually heard great things about apple tv and its AirPlay capabilities, but it is not available in my country, so I have to shop around for alternatives. The cable is that VGA adaptor. :p

I can also type pretty fast in landscape but overall prefer a mechanical keyboard when I have to do any serious typing. I just plug my keyboard in with the camera attachment and I'm off happy clicking away.
