Developers have options in regards to usable area for iPhone X. If you look at the actual guidelines, there's no Apple requirement for the live area to include the notch at all.

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/
From the section „Layout“:
Don't mask or call special attention to key display features. Don't attempt to hide the device's rounded corners, sensor housing, or indicator for accessing the Home screen by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Don't use visual adornments like brackets, bezels, shapes, or instructional text to call special attention to these areas, either.
My emphasis.

Honestly I don’t even mind the notch anymore after spending some time with my phone. All these unhappy buyers should go return there devices you have 14 days. Apple doesn’t have a gun to your head forcing you to keep it! Damn nit pickers.

So? That doesn't actually mean that live content has to be cropped or obscured by the sensor housing. From the guide...

"For apps with custom layouts, supporting iPhone X should also be relatively easy, especially if your app uses Auto Layout and adheres to safe area and margin layout guides."

It then shows diagrams of the 'safe area' that do not include the notch OR the areas to the left/right of the notch. Then it also says...

"In general, content should be centered and symmetrically inset so it looks great in any orientation and isn't clipped by corners or the device's sensor housing, or obscured by the indicator for accessing the Home screen."

...which was not the question at hand. It was whether the developers could do something to make the notch less conspicuous and irritating. They can not, because they may not.

I have only seen pictures and videos of the iPhone X – never used one, but based on that I think I wouldn’t have a problem with the notch when using apps but when viewing photos and videos in full screen and playing games horizontally I think it would bother me.

They are literally not allowed to do that. It’s against Apple‘s guidelines and would lead to a rejection on submission to the App Store.
WOW. So the iPhone X ACTUALLY, literally takes off a part of your experience, with the notch and corners, with no way around it. What is Apple thinking? RIP APPLE!!! (This is hyperbole, but still. They need a good humbling.)

Guess people who like gaming on their iOS devices are nerds, losers, and plebs, according to Apple. Kinda saw this coming when they killed Game Center, but was hoping for the best...
