To me this seems like they're running out of ideas, what features to add to their Macbooks.
Touchscreen will be just another bulletpoint.

These hybrid devices have been around for 10+ years and some people like the extra input option, but generally it's not a game changer at all.
Unless of course Apple found totally new ideas how to combine touchscreen + mouse/keyboard input methods, but I doubt it.

From all the people I know that have touch screen laptops they all love it.
However only a couple of them actually use the touch functionality frequently.

I hope apple brings more than just touch - but some form factor that would make sense.
Problem is - they would kill the iPad pro then
I don’t think it’s necessarily about using it frequently, it’s just about having it there if you ever need it, intentionally or not.
Almost every average consumer I know always tries to reach and touch the Mac display, thinking that it’s a touchscreen, it’s just instinct at this point.
I also don’t think it has any chance of killing the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro is a tablet that’s under a pound, the MacBook Pro is an almost 4 pound or almost 5 pound laptop. People who like the iPad form factor and who don’t primarily use it on a keyboard already, aren’t going to give up the tablet.. obviously, there is no solid numbers on this, but in my experience, the vast majority of iPad customers do not have keyboard cases or if they do, they are only attached on occasion temporarily.

It's a pass for me... I'm always constantly wiping my screens to keep any smudges off of them and don't really want to have to do that with a laptop.
In that case, it absolutely should not be a pass for you, given that the touchscreen is very likely to come accompanied with the oleophobic coating from the iPhone and iPad. If you don’t touch the screen, it should still make smudges less noticeable or easier to clean.

But I would have to pay more for the laptop for a feature I don't want. Now if they offer one version with touch screen at a higher price, and also another version without a touch screen at a lower price, then I obviously wouldn't care.
Ultra will have this feature...the rest of the line-up will stay touch free

Apple apparently is not going to advertise the ‌new MacBook Pro‌/Ultra as a touch-first device like the ‌iPad‌ – it will be "touch-friendly, not touch-first

As i mentioned in a previous post, MacOS will NEVER work on an iPad.

1. iPad's use NAND Flash storage. users would never be able to format a drive as they would on MacOS
2. Due to the fact that iPad used 16GB of RAM with no active cooling, users would see severe red memory pressure, lag and slow-down. Even with a vapor chamber, the 5.1mm thickness would not help.

The list is endless

Stop asking for MacOS, as it will never work as intended. Start asking for iPadOS to be better.
The MacBooks use nand too… The iPad doesn’t use any special nand storage chips. Just like the Neo with the A series processor just runs MacOS fine on 8 GB ram.

Wait. We have been told that a touch screen Mac is heresy. I have been derided many times on this site asking for a touch screen Mac. What has changed at Apple that makes this a possibility? My grandkids will be thrilled. Next you will tell me that liquid glass can be turned off after I have been derided as stupid and ignorant for not liking it. Is allowing consumer's choice a new marketing direction for Apple?

If the screen could lay down flat, allowing for a more iPad-like experience when writing notes and tapping around on occasion, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. However, I don't believe I've seen that mentioned in any rumors, and adding that type of functionality would certainly cannibalize iPad sales. I don't mind it being added, but it isn't compelling enough on it's own to make me want to upgrade from my M4 Max.

No hardware announcements at WWDC, and now the MBU is delayed until 2027. Gah.

I'm finally in a financial position where I can buy an expensive Mac but there's nothing interesting to buy. I understand the chip shortage situation but in general, Apple releases things at their own pace. It must be nice to have the luxury of not having to rush to beat the competition to the market ... for anything.

I miss when Apple released things that were "game changing" that changed the way you were productive - even MacOS did this. Not so much anymore. The last time that happened was with Apple Silicon, which I guess isn't very game changing except my MBP's cooling fan doesn't spin up when I record voice-overs with a mic.

Hopefully with John Ternus we'll see some better momentum rather than Apple resting on their laurels.

Steve said no about this already. Were people not listening?

Steve's dead, with a 100% chance of remaining dead into this evening. If we look at the map, we can see that he will continue to be dead into next week, followed by an extended period of being dead well into the rest of summer and fall. Long range forecast models show that he will remain dead.

I don't want to touch my laptopscreen. Even with the best Windows touchscreen laptops I hardly ever use them for touch.
So don’t use the touch or get an m5?
I'd like an iPadPro running macOS personally.

Maxed out with cellular = yes please!
That's the dream isn't it? ultra portable with pencil support on the go , plugged into a monitor and its a full desktop.

But I would have to pay more for the laptop for a feature I don't want.
Newsflash: every single tech product you have ever purchased has features that you don’t want, or don’t use.
I have never, not once, had a use for all three USB-C ports on my MacBook at the same time, should Apple just rip one of them out because I don’t use it?

I am not a fan of these multi-modal input devices. I have a Microsoft Surface Laptop which has a touch input which I have never used except to see if it worked. I just find moving from keyboard to mouse/touchpad to screen input too complex for rapid communication with the device. And poking at a nearly vertical screen seems unnatural to me. If it is a device that can be physically positioned as either touch or keyboard/mouse/touchpad then it might work. But I always find touch interfaces to be incredibly imprecise and do not particularly like them. It will be interesting to see how Apple make this work. Combined MacBook/iPad perhaps? Confluence of devices maybe coming.
