I think I paid a little more than that for my Camry when I bought it new in 2009

I distinctly remembering my 2011 Corolla being around 15K when I bought it. The Camry at the time being like 20-24 for the normal model.

I know inflation exists but cars are definitely going up in price. it's actually challenging to find a 2019 car less than $20,000 USD.

I’ve been quite happy with CarPlay in my 2016 VW GTI since I bought it in January 2016. VW implemented it early and they got my business. Simple formula. The fact that it’s wired doesn’t bother me even if wireless is more convenient.

I have wired carplay in my 2019 Forester, and love it. I also am perfectly happy with it being wired.

CarPlay is nice, but without wireless, to me it’s useless. I would rather go aftermarket since they now offer wireless CarPlay.

Why is it useless without wireless? Sure it’s less convenient and would be much improved but what makes it useless?

I see that Toyota has Blu Ray in some cars, so DVD is for the cheap ones.

A $19,500 Corolla. Welcome to the future. I guess relative to most new cars (I think ASP of USA new car sales in 2018 was like $37,000), the Corolla is still a bargain but 20K for a Corolla seems like a practical joke.

Grab the spec sheet and base MSRP for the 2009 Corolla.

Now adjust for 10 years of inflation and for the extra features you get on the 2019 model.

All of a sudden, the $19,500 is a screaming bargain. For a car that could easily last 200k with regular maintenance.

At least it should have rear speakers, not like the Etios where everything is ready but they don't install them

I don't know why anyone would rely 100% on wireless CarPlay. Eats up your battery reeaaalll fast. I would trust my old Lightning USB cable over wireless Carplay and charging. You're in a walking car, the slightest bump can mess up with wireless charging. Two hours drive and I'd end up with 5% battery because of interrupted wireless charging.

If I can go wired, I would. Just like my house are connected with 10Gbps LAN throughout every room.

BMW's cars (the only ones who seem to offer this wild Wireless Carplay option) do have USB ports.
You are not forced to use it without wires. You can plug it in. They even offer docks inside the armrest if you prefer it as a plug in option.

A lot of people don't always drive 2 hours but 30 minutes or less. They would prefer don't having to think about anything (like today to make calls) and battery won't suffer because there isn't enough time for that. Perhaps BMW understands that better being from Europe were distances are small.

This seems like the audio jack nonsense of having to remove it to use Bluetooth headphones.

I didn't mean to incite the Toyota fanboys. Sheesh. $19,500 is not a bargain for an econobox cars but relative to the car industry, it is. That's my point. "20K for a corolla?!?" was my reaction then I priced out a few base compact vehicles and they're all 20K now so I'm wrong simply because I don't follow the car industry.

I'm sorry for offending the Toyota fanboys. that wasn't my intention.

I don't believe a Corolla or a Kia Soul or a Honda Fit or any other compact econobox vehicles should cost 20 grand but they do so oh well. As for Toyota's stellar reputation, I have a 2015 Ford Escape with 260K miles and the original motor. All cars now last a long time relative to 20 years ago. That's not exclusive to Toyota anymore. How they couldn't get more than 29MPG out of a 1.8 Liter underpowered motor is the real crime here. My Golf Sporwagen gets 38 w/ a 1.8T that puts out 170 horsepower and my 2.5L Escape gets 28 and likely weighs 500 pounds more than the Corolla.

It looks like Toyota probably built a great car that will last a long time but overall, cars are still too expensive. We can go back and forth and cherry pick at stats but I'm not going to argue with "infinite timescale" people who say 20 grand is cheap because it can go for 200K miles. That is not exclusive to Toyota anymore.

Last time I checked, you could get a Honda Fit base model for $14-16K.

Wireless CarPlay would be a nice add that Toyota should have done as a stand out feature versus competitors but they missed the boat as usual. Honestly, wireless CarPlay isn't a big deal IMHO. At the end of the day, you get in the car get the phone set and lay it down for the duration of the ride. Wireless doesn't really add much value when you think about it. Hell, BMW is charging $10 a month for wireless CarPlay and some how they are getting away with it?

CarPlay is a stand out feature that I must have in my next car.

Useless? Does you gig not have a charging cable? Or do you prefer wireless charging and refuse to have an extra cord cluttering up your space?

I love the fact that my CarPlay stereo is wired. I get to use CarPlay and my phone charges. Win win!

Some of the fancier cars have Qi chargers built-in, so I can see why those car owners don't want extra cables cluttering up their oh-so-sacred space.

if you want to go aftermarket, my recommendation is to avoid Toyota. their headunits are too tightly integrated to the dash and cars electronics they're not easily replaced.. but this has been a trend for most manu's so i dunno what else is an option.

the pricing of these new cars is insanity. I bought a 2012 SE 4cyl fully loaded, with financing for approximately 22k USD. brand new in 2012.

my dealership keeps sending me letters claiming that my car is prime for trade in because they have massive interest in cars of mine age, and mileage (60,000km's). So I went in to find out what it would get me into. for $400 (CAD) / month for 4 years, I can trade up into a 2018 Corolla LE! Nevermind THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS PAYING FOR A CAMRY!

these price increases have been absolutely ludicrous in the car market. I can't even imagine what they are right now with all the trade kerfuffles going on . But I can assure that Toyota's current pricing is not going to convince me to get another one. I've priced out some of the competition. For nearly the same price as that LE Corolla, I can get a fully loaded Mazda 3 sport GT with AWD.

i'm approaching 8 years on my Camry and sure feeling the itch to get something new. But i'm a cheap miser and if you want me to spend the money, I need to feel like the value's justified. Toyotas no longer doing that.

Will this work in my 1997 Corolla?

lol.

When I bought my last car it was an absolute must that it supported CarPlay. Can't believe it took Toyota this long.

Hubris

Back when Carplay was launched Toyota publicly stated they will NOT adopt it because they believe that they can do better.

They could not

CurrentC and Apple Pay comes to mind immediately!

They should offer wireless charging and Carplay on the higher trims. I personally hate having to plug in a usb cable in a car. When in a rush, it takes time and sometimes you forget or misplace the cable.

I just got CarPlay in a new car (Jeep Grand Cherokee). It is truly excellent. An unsung part of the Apple ecosystem

That said, I wish I had wireless CarPlay. I consistently forget to plug my iPhone in before driving off. I now see how a wireless version would be the way to go

We have a 2018 Grand Cherokee. I wish it was wireless too. Do any American manufacturers offer wireless CarPlay?

Meanwhile, in New Zealand

""I've never actually seen, or found, the value in it [CarPlay]. That's not to say we don't want it, but for us it has not been a priority in all of our product negotiations with Japan.

"I would debate whether any customers are making their car-buying decisions based purely on whether or not the car has Apple CarPlay.""
