Listen Toyota!

The Entune software is terrible. We used it for a month in our new Tacoma. The only thing worse than the entune is the fact that you want to charge exorbitant amounts for your map upgrades. This is behind the power curve with lifetime map updates already being included for no cost by garmin. I'm pretty sure the fact that you do not want to upgrade to the Apple carplay is simply because you want to charge for entune and charge for map updates annually. I have my toyota in dash display and the only thing I use it for is the sirius XM. A nice garmin unit sits just above it on the windshield.

Sadly most consumers have never heard of carplay or android auto so the automakers have nothing to lose by not using it.

It's a money thing

Car manufacturers make approximately 5-10% of their revenue from these terrible in-dash systems. Carplay represents a massive profit hit, therefore very few major manufacturerr will support it. I bought an Acura and a Mercedes this year and have been infinitely disappointed with both systems. Put a Pioneer Carplay receiver in my sister's 10 year old Scion and she's in heaven.

Just what would CarPlay do for us that we need so desperately?
Does it plug into the OBD II port?

Our new Honda's system is crap. The user unfriendliness of the whole audio and phone integration is a hack of hacks.

I've not been impressed by any auto manufacturers offerings even in this model year. OEMs admit you suck and let the two most popular consumer electronic device manufacturers take over.

My commuting vehicle is ten years old and has an aux port. My next car won't have a system that's a kludgy hack of dissimilar UI that is nerfed to get me to pony up for the $1500 navigation system. I'll never pay it when my phone has the latest maps from four different sources!

Toyota's in car system is horrible in US. I have seen the one that was used in Japan, its day and night difference.
In lots of Asian country, the Toyota cars are able to stream TV and comes with navigation system for base model. Some even already having MirrorLink and other mobile integrations already.

Why in the world we have such a ****** system here? It's utterly ridiculous.

I bought an Audi recently, and the infotainment system is freaking awful. What is the point of having a 4G LTE in the car when it does almost nothing beside showing Google Earth as map background in the navigation system.

I have a 2007 Prius that has served me well, and I love it. Was looking to replace it with another Prius, so I've been patiently waiting for a version with CarPlay.

I'm in Australia, but I'm guessing if you aren't getting it in the US, we aren't getting it either.

So guess I need to find another hybrid that will have CarPlay. Honda 2015?

Well I currently have no plans to buy a Toyota. I am going to be picking from a handful of cars next time and the one I pick will definately have CarPlay. Your loss Toyota, the Camry was on my short list.

Well, people will vote with their money. I drive a Scion (owned by Toyota) and have plans to get a new vehicle in June/July timeframe. Planned on sticking with either Scion or Toyota since I've had zero problems with my Scion, but CarPlay is high on the list of things I want. Yes, there's the aftermarket, but I'd rather not deal with that.

I hope they'll reassess this decision.

When will car companies realize that they can't make this kind of stuff... Clunky and difficult to use is an understatement. They make cars. They need to give up and let Apple and Google do the software...

There are a lot of considerations like reliability, safety, and cost that restrict the type of features that can be implemented in automative electronics. I'm sure most head-end units aren't very expensive; adding a high-end computer into the car is something manufacturers don't want to do especially with the competition and tight fisted customers.

Asia has dedicated mobile tv networks in certain countries (namely Japan and South Korea)... that's why they can offer such services. Not to mention, their safety laws maybe laxier, allowing them to put such a feature into an OEM head-end.

This reminds me of Verizon not going along with the whole iPhone thing in early 2007 and letting AT&T have that luxury until 2011. Not sure that was the best idea...

That probably hurt Apple more than Verizon. Note how they had to revise their terms with AT&T for a lower cost of entry. Without Verizon, Android may not have have gained much ground in the US during that time. Overall if it wasn't in Apple's best interest to sell Verizon iphones, I don't think it would have happened at all, given the difference in their networks.

Toyota User Interface is Terrible

I have a Prius and I would kill for the ability to use CarPlay. These car companies want to waste their time making a "unique" user experience, when I would rather that they spend the time and money on better cars.

I don't disagree with your point but I will say that I received a survey from Toyota just this week (as part of Toyota's Owners Intersection) asking about my preference for in-car enter-/info-tainment systems. So, they at least look to be considering it.

"we prefer to use our in-house proprietary platforms"

Clearly not thinking about what the consumer wants.

What was the reason behind Verizon's decision? I switched to ATT after being with Verizon for 10+ years just because I wanted an iPhone.

Another bad move from Toyota

It's always shocking to me how large companies can't learn the simplest lessons....all they have to do is look back to the 70s and 80s and wonder what took them so long to let manufacturers who specialize (Pioneer Sony )into the dash of the cars-they could've sold a lot more cars then, instead of letting aftermarket companies make the money.

Now Thanks to this foolish decision Toyota will continue to lose millions to Hyundai and Kia

Toyota has the absolute worst in dash systems. The most derivative garbage i have ever used. Its really comical in a way how bad it is. They also want to charge like 200 bucks a year for a map upgrade. Terrible.

Signed,

Toyota faithful

Unfortunately customer demand isn't that dedicated nor coercive. Customer's will complain for all of a second (or not at all) and then buy the car anyway and they clearly know this. I think it is safe to assume Toyota isn't supporting this because no other car companies are either. It is clear they have had their back room meeting on this.

What car company is releasing a car with Car Play in it this year? How many of their cars will have it as an option?

Mercedes, Honda, Volvo

Bad mistake, Toyota!

I've been holding off buying another Prius until they updated the electronics with better integration with my phone and iPods. Looks like I'll have a long wait.

No doubt.. We seriously considered a Toyota SUV (2012 model) but the "in house proprietary platforms" sucked and that was part of why we didn't buy one. They're doing themselves a disservice by looking at profit on a small part of a car, vs something that could sell additional units.

I get that those features are all gravy, but when we looked they were significantly behind the curve.

Nor surprising. Toyota's are the most boring blah cars on the road today. Popular and reliable but boring and very uninspiring IMO.
