Never said such a thing so why would you assume that?

Because of the way you used your comment as a retort to hattonna928's comment.

Had you said your opinion all on its own, you're right, it doesn't say that. But when using your thought as a retort to that post then, yes, it does imply what I said.

If it didn't mean what I said then it makes zero sense to quote hattonna928. I mean, was that what happened? Did you just pick that comment at random to reply to?

I've never seen so many people say they'd make a 5 to 6 figure financial decision based on their cell phone manufacturer. That's some of the strangest crap I've ever heard. One of you who've made that statement, please help me understand your logic. I am genuinely curious how a decision on purchasing a car (the second most expensive purchase most people make) can be influenced to that extent by something as inconsequential as the infotainment module being Apple powered.

I like Apple too, but sweet Jeebus there's no way in hell Apple could influence my decision making to that degree. That type of thinking kinda does qualify for that derogatory term some people use to describe over zealous Apple fans. Rhymes with Bo Peep.

Have you driven a new car lately? The infotainment systems in them are absolutely horrible. Kludgy, proprietary, non-intuitive, and many more negative adjectives. Precisely because I am spending 5 or 6 figures on a vehicle it's important to me. My "cell phone" is no longer a cell phone, and hasn't been one for quite some time. It's a computer that carries much of my life on it.

I can find any one of 3 or 4 different car manufacturers in any price range that provide pretty much the same driving experience, performance, aesthetics, safety and reliability. The biggest difference between them is going to be the infotainment system. And they pretty much all suck, are too expensive, are outdated when they go into the car, and get worse in that regard with every year that goes by. Why wouldn't I want my 5 or 6 figure vehicle, that I am probably going to drive for 10 years or more to have an infotainment system that stays current and makes my driving experience safer and more pleasant?

Please tell me you're not seriously making a $30-45K decision based on CarPlay. Even if you are, please just tell me you aren't.

Bolded from your quote and totally off topic: Audi will never improve their reliability:eek: The electronics are schizophrenic. I drive an A5. Buying an Audi, BMW, or Merc implicitly means you understand the relationship with your mechanic will be a long and prosperous one... for the mechanic.:D I wanted another Audi this year but none of the models I want are manual (US). They're all autos or paddle shift, and I am a 3 pedal rower.

I don't buy car to race. I don't care about 0-60 seconds. I care for reliability and features that are practical, such as back-up camera, keyless entry.

it is not about carplay. my phone is a personal device. it has my contacts, music, GPS settings/favorites, messages. it is very personal to me. if my car can integrate to my phone, it has my personality.

when I start my car and drive everyday. those things above are what I actually use most, not turbo charge, not sport mode, not 0-60 seconds. moreover, 10 years later, these features are upgradable from my phone. car built-in proprietary tech is not upgradable, or not cheap.

look at this way, if an iphone is so powerful but it does not have an app that I really need. it is useless.

That's okay, I currently have no plans to buy a Toyota. Come to think of it, I can't imagine why I ever would have plans to buy a Toyota.

Wouldn't the $30-45K price put the focus even more on upgradeable technology? It's actually a deal breaker for me as well, and I'm planning on spending far more than that. And believe me, the interoperation with my smartphone is very high on the list...rather than spend money on a bunch of ad hoc services like On Star or subscription based navigation systems, I have all of that in my pocket.

Very few people buy cars to race. What does racing and 0-60 times have to do with what we're discussing? I guess everyone has different things that separate a car in their mind. To each his own.

this is one of the reasons why we care about carplay. so that we don't have to schedule an appointment with local dealer to upgrade a proprietary system. or they don't even offer upgrade. or wait for a long time and expensive.

Like I said, I care for reliability and practical features that matters. and Carplay is one of those features. It would keep my car up to date 5+ years later.

"We may all eventually wind up there, but right now we prefer to use our in-house proprietary platforms for those kinds of functions," Mr. Hanson said.

They'll wind up there when they can charge and sell the additional $2k for the Carplay or Android Auto add-on package that costs them only $100.

I drive a car every day and I'm shopping new cars this year. The infotainment systems have ranged from bad to pretty damn good. To be fair, the infotainment system ranks somewhere below the color of the inside of my gas tank in level of importance. Bluetooth connects my car and devices well enough to do anything I would need to do. Beyond GPS and music, I have no need for any other function. I don't take/make calls or texts while driving.

You do have some valid reasons for your use case, I'll give you that. Everything except that safer part. The infotainment is the antithesis of safer.

Exactly.

The screen in the car will act as a CarPlay terminal... and all the real stuff happens on the phone. People upgrade their phones more often than their cars.

The problem is... car makers still have to create their own infotainment solutions for people who don't have smartphones. A car should never require an Android phone or an iPhone.

It shouldn't be much work for them to integrate CarPlay or Android Auto into their systems. They just have to decide to.

But Toyota didn't... which I think is a huge mistake.

The question is... will Toyota lose more money because people don't pay for Toyota infotainment upgrades anymore?

Or will they lose more money from people NOT buying Toyotas?

I think the latter :)

This is just history repeating... The car companies never offered sophisticated stereos until people started spending money to upgrade their factory stereos... then they started offering it them and charging a hefty sum.

Next they didn't offer integration with MP3 players or iPods... until people started to upgrade their infotainment systems with third party systems...

Advanced smartphone integration will be next... if there is demand and money to made, they'll do it.... Go to any car company web site and calculate how much these add-on packages add to the base price of the car.

The poster I responded to was deciding between two cars in that price bracket. That's the reason for the $ figure. I'm confused. What car available today isn't interoperable with any smartphone. With both bluetooth and wifi available in cars where's the disconnect?

No one has to spend money on ad hoc services. As you said all of that is in your pocket, and as I said it can be connected through bluetooth or wifi. I said in another post different people have different priorities when it comes to cars. CarPlay being an option would not be one of mine.

Their loss. I know many people that are walking in and out auto show rooms when the sales guys say they don't support Apple Carplay. They do one of the following:

1) Ask, "What is Carplay?"
2) Try to pitch you their third party connectivity solution.
3) Question why is smartphone connectivity so important?

All, an Apple follower will walk out. Been told the Japanese car dealers are the worst.

What exactly do you think you'd need to upgrade? Bluetooth?

Like I said, I care for reliability and practical features that matters. and Carplay is one of those features. It would keep my car up to date 5+ years later.

You're answering a question I never asked. I asked why were you talking about racing and 0-60 times. Practical features? What's practical about CarPlay? Not being snarky. Genuinely curious about what you think is practical about CarPlay.

then what are you doing in this forum thread? to impose that carplay is insignificant? if it is so unimportant, why would apple even care to waist time on it? why any manufacturers even care to announce to support it?

if infotainment system is so unimportant, why any car makers would invest so much resources and advertise on it?

you don't get it.

10+ years later, how do your car GPS, voice command, etc work without upgrade? Do you know that Siri is improved overtime? so is apple Map. Siri and Apple Map would be much better in iOS 10, which is upgradable.

can your car infotainment system be upgraded so that it improves over time? in timely manner and cost effectively?

people throw away their factory in-dash stereo and replace with after-market stereo because it gets obsolete over time. with carplay, we can do this upgrade without throwing away the factory monitor/stereo.

I think you are arguing for the sake of arguing without fully understanding what carplay really means.

What you wrote is not true. Caveat: It's not true about the US. Fact - Every major car maker in the US is signed up as a CarPlay supporter. Toyota was as well until this announcement, and they are still on Apple's website. Fact - Unless you walk into a Ferrari dealership and buy an FF, you can't get CarPlay. Honda/Acura has limited connectivty through Siri Hands Free and should upgrade to full CarPlay later this year. Hyundai should be the next to intro it by the end of the 1st qtr.

So no one walking into dealerships is being told the dealer doesn't support CarPlay. They may say it's not available yet, because it's not. Why would they say that when they're all signed on as supporters?

Based on what you said an Apple follower won't be buying a car anytime soon. Japanese car dealers are the worst? Where, Japan? Cuz here in America, those dealerships are owned by the same type of guys who own dealerships of other brands. Often dealers own several different brands.

Your post is disturbing.

Edit: Porsche hasn't committed support either which is weird since parent (VW) and sister (Audi) are both supporters. Maybe it's the Porsche ethos of pure driving machine. As they say, Porsche, There Is No Substitute.

I am in this thread because I have an interest in technology. I never said CarPlay was unimportant or insignificant. I did say the infotainment system is unimportant to me. To me. There is a clear distinction between what I said and what you think I said. There is no correlation between the two. The rest of your quote is inconsequential because I never implied any of it.

I think it's debatable who doesn't understand what CarPlay means. I know exactly what it means. This lack of upgrade path you mention? Yeah it won't exist. Car manufacturers will be upgrading their systems just like CarPlay and Android Auto; via an app. They're not stupid. They may even try to charge for it. Who knows. But they will be upgraded by apps. They all use QNX as a base so it won't be that hard.

If there's ever something I don't understand, I say so. There have been several topics on this forum where I knew very little. I asked questions instead of rendering opinions. This is not one of those topics.

I'm not calling you a liar, but what you wrote is not true. Caveat: It's not true about the US. Fact - Every major car maker in the US is signed up as a CarPlay supporter. You said Honda/Acura will upgrade to full CarPlay later this year. Does that include the 2015 Acura TLX that was just purchased by someone I know? Is it a firmware update? I suspect the answer is no to both questions, but I'm hoping I can get some good news for him.

When will car companies realize that they can't make this kind of stuff... The interfaces for these systems are all terrible. It doesn't matter what brand it is either: Honda, Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, etc. None of them make good "infotainment" systems. Clunky and difficult to use is an understatement. They make cars. They need to give up and let Apple and Google do the software...

Really? Since when do Google or apple make better infotainment systems? Car systems are basic and intuitive, but maybe because your suppose to keep your eyes on the road ? If you want better features you replace the system with a 3rd party one, it will interface with your smart phone. Why should car makers pay apple or Google royalties for ever Car sold?

Not a smart movie. With Toyota's rivals supporting CarPlay, it's not smart to not support CarPlay. When people are thinking about spending $20k+, small things like that could factor a decision.

----------

There are only two kinds of people who buy Toyotas:

1. people who can't afford a proper car
2. members or ISIS and Al Shabab

Dude, lol.
Good one

And when will everyone else realize touch screens and infotainment screens in general are dangerous in cars.

Which are usually controlled by steering wheel buttons or starting to come on board by voice. Certainly a lot less dangerous that fiddling with tuning a radio station or inserting a cassette or CD, how times change...

If you have an iPhone, you will usually set a playlist before you set off so no fiddling along the way, again, safer than in years gone by.

There are a lot of considerations like reliability, safety, and cost that restrict the type of features that can be implemented in automative electronics. I'm sure most head-end units aren't very expensive; adding a high-end computer into the car is something manufacturers don't want to do especially with the competition and tight fisted customers.

Which car company do you work for :)

Car companies cannot make entertainment systems, their interface sucks. They overcharge for them. They restrict the users ability to change them by making them part of the dashboard. How much do they charge for Map updates...
