Inertial Scrolling

Hi Vladimir,

Just got PPA and Trackpad++ and made my donations.
Very nice work! The only thing I miss in Trackpad++ is inertial scrolling. I've seen it's been on your roadmap since 2013, but not available yet... Any plan for a future release?
Best regards,
Cesar

@cesarvog: First, a brief summary, could be useful for the new users. With Trackpad++ the following scroll-related option are available:
- Accelerated scroll, 3 accel. curve presets (less sensitive than Boot Camp-native driver scroll, but accelerated);
- Or Boot Camp-like, linear scroll;
- Inverted ('natural') scroll
- Or standard direction scroll
- Option to not 'Respect focus', i.e.send the scroll to a window or control below pointer, regardless is it focused or not.
Currently all of those Trackpad++ options work identically in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

About the absence of the inertia effect: a while ago I had a demo where scroll inertia was present. It was neither precise, nor beautiful, though... mostly because in classic Windows desktop applications you cannot scroll with pixel-fine granularity. One line of text is the minimal distance. There were some other issues in such scroll implementation, so after all I never published it. Now I'm investigating how to make the inertia available in Windows 10, using the Windows 10 new APIs.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply and explanation Vladimir.

I'll keep an eye on your work when Windows 10 arrives.

Best wishes.

@All: Could somebody who has the new (Mid-2015) 15" Macbook Pro confirm the Trackpad++ is working? Thank you. (Why I'm asking: there seems to be no usual emails overflow from people asking to support the new model after it became available, and this might mean it just works already with the version of the Trackpad++ driver for 13" Early-2015 Macbook Pro).

The Trackpad ++ drivers do not install on the new 15" Macbook Pro

@Assif: Thank you for posting here, and also for contacting me via email.
@All: Now I'm (kind of) remotely working on supporting this new model. According to some technical information later provided by Mr. Assif, the Mid-2015 15" model has the trackpad which is for some reason different from already supported 12"/13" Force Touch Macbook models. But let's hope it's still almost the same hardware... I'll keep the community updated.

Update: the trackpad I/O protocol in the 15" Force Touch model is (very surprisingly!) much different from the one in already supported 13" and 12" Force Touch Macbooks. So the development, or better say porting, of the Trackpad++ for the Mid-2015 15" Macbook Pro might take several weeks.

Hi,

I could have sworn that the version before the latest one (dated June) actually prompted me to reboot and even saved my settings between versions. However when I installed this June 4 version it rebooted automatically like it used to (without prompting) and settings were overwritten.

Was what I saw a fluke or did the approach change back between versions? Thanks!

@calkenneth: Yes, an extra prompt should have been added, for Force Touch trackpad at least, because it doesn't stop registering the input between updating the trackpad driver and auto-rebooting. Whereas classic Multitouch trackpad tends to act so. As for keeping the settings after upgrade - not yet there. Not without the reason - it's much safer between the versions, because next changes may drive old driver settings incorrect/unreadable. Better approach is hopefully coming later this year.

Hi,

Is there a reason why the prompt didn't show up again for the recent release dated June 4? Loved the ability to save my work and close programs before rebooting :)

Thank you,
Kenneth

@calkenneth: I see no reasons :)
I think starting the overall re-installation/update of the driver is the act of consciousness, not a sporadic event. There are warnings in the installer, plus you already have the knowledge, I mean you did it in the past and you know the reboot is expected. Anyways, thanks for your feedback.

this is a ton better than the bootcamp drivers which makes the trackpad unusable but is there a way to enable double tap to drag (+lock)?

@zombiecakes: Thank you for the feedback. I actually had responded to a similar question on the previous page... Here is the answer. This specific feature (I call it simply 1-finger dragging) was there in Trackpad++ quite a while ago. It however had the issues with accidental drag'n'drop operations, very frustrating thing. So I decided to remove it after the reliable 3-finger drag had become available in Trackpad++... I think it's better to include only the reliable, high quality gestures. During the next stages of development I hope to return to this feature and put it back (if reworked successfully).

I like very much this program/app, at first the 3 and 4 fingers features dont work in MacBook Pro Retina 13, if u have this problem, just restart your computer and it works very well, and the 3 finger drag works awesome, i use it very often.

@WESKERRE5: Thank you for the feedback! Strange that the gestures didn't work at first. Normally they are enabled right after the initial installation followed by automatic reboot.
@All: Just a quick update regarding the Mid-2015 15" Macbook Pro Force Touch support. So Apple has put a totally different trackpad in it, although they never mentioned this anywhere. What I mean, the trackpad appears the same to a user externally, but from Windows driver developer's point of view it has nothing common with already Trackpad++ enabled 12"/13" Force Touch trackpad. Very strange! So the new version of the Trackpad++ supporting the 15" model is definitely coming, but not to soon. Mid-July would be the optimistic ETA...

Just wanted to say thanks for creating TP++ I love my MacBook Pro but I use it in bootcamp with Win 8.1 more than OSX and the trackpad made that a subpar experience. Now it works great and I'm happy. Definitely worth the $15 donation!

PS: Yes this is my first post but I felt it worth registering here to post some positive feedback for this software. I am not a paid endorser :)

@John.A: Thank you very much for the feedback.
@All: There is some nice progress supporting Mid-2015 15" Force Touch rMBP trackpad variation. Now I think in 2-3 weeks the next Trackpad++ version compatible with this model will be released.

@All: Is anybody interested to try the next version before it gets released? The new test (BETA) build of the Trackpad++ is ready. No major new features, just more polished gesture recognition (especially for Windows 10) and further CPU (threading) optimization. And the initial support of the 15" Mid-2015 Force Touch Macbook Pro is there! So, no matter what generation of the Macbook Pro (2009+) or Air (2010+) you got, you can help by simply installing from the link below and providing some feedback.

(Just in case: the very stable current build is available in parallel, as usual, from project's website :))
As for the test version, I'm confident in it, but have to add these words: use at your own risk.

That new version works great. The gestures for three/four fingers are very responsive. Cool! If only you'd added the true rubber scroll effect. That would be my absolute euphoria morning :D
Keep up the GREAT work man!!!

Thanks for releasing the beta for us to test. I tried the new version and it seems like I'm constantly highlighting text without intending to. Usually happens when I'm using two finger scrolling (up and down). Is this something that has been adjusted since the stable version?

@Cozz: Thank you very much, what is the model and generation of your Macbook?
@calkenneth: Thanks you for the feedback, yes, like I mentioned, many small things changed under the hood. All with the hope to be to the best, of course. What is the model and generation of your Macbook? The driver now actually has a few forks, and some issues may be there only for specific trackpad type, because we have, as a minimum, 3 different major trackpad hardware revisions now. In reality, even more (4), because a while ago in 2013 Air suddenly (and silently) got different trackpad hardware than old Pro.
@All: All of the feedback (not only from this forum, but mostly email feedback) about this test version was very good to good. So I think I'll be releasing it today with just a few recent super-minor fixes. So 15" Mid-2015 Macbook Pro with Force Touch is going to be fully supported by Trackpad++ driver as soon as later today.

I have a Macbook Pro from mid-late 2014. I downgraded to the existing version 3.1b and the issue I was experiencing went away.

@calkenneth: Could you, please, check the latest build. It's just become available from the website of the project. Does the issue persist for you in this build?

@All: Yes, this finally happened. Trackpad++ version 3.1c is out. The most important change is Mid-2015 Force Touch technology support. So now both 12", 13" and 15" Force Touch models are supported. For previous generations I tried to reflect all of the small improvements made when creating the recent Force Touch version. But, to restate from my previous post, the need to code multiple forks of the driver in parallel makes the development even more complicated than before. So it might happen that some minor issue exists somewhere. But overall all is working even better than usually, many people confirmed. This is it. Enjoy (or hate :D) the new version.

Hi,

Just downloaded the new version from the website and tried it out. Yes, the scrolling and highlighting problem still exists. When scrolling down, it often interprets my two finger touch as scroll up and highlight text. This sends my cursor to the beginning of the page.

Anything else you'd like me to test?

@calkenneth: Thanks a lot for reporting. That's very strange indeed. And the strangest thing is, nobody else had reported anything similar. Do all the rest of the feature appear to work? May I ask you to contact me via email... I'll send you something. Thank you.
