My trade-in kit came yesterday, and it looks ridiculously flimsy. I'm thinking of stopping by the Apple store to see if they'll take my trade there, even though I already picked up the new phone on launch day and didn't give it to them then.

I always get nervous dropping off my trade in iPhone... (stolen in transit is the worry) UG!

I would use in store but I have a lot of financial apps and encryption apps that need to be transferred separately.

am I the only one?
I have a return (not an iPhone) that fed ex picked up on 9/16 that has just been sitting in my local hub. Called on it yesterday they said someone would call me about it today.

Wanna guess who never called me?

I usually put it in a discreet box like an Amazon box. Mines did get stolen before when I shipped with the provided little box.

I'm less nervous about it being stolen, but more about whoever's handling the inspection introducing damages and blaming it on me. I know I can (and I do) take pictures and videos before shipping, but when it arrives it becomes my words vs theirs and I don't want the trouble. If I bring it to the store, I can inspect it with the Apple Genius together and that'll be it.

This year I got my new phone in the mail, did all the transfers and whatnot at home, then brought the erased old phone to a physical store to complete the trade in.

They accepted your trade-in at the store? Was this in the US?

This will be the second time I send an iPhone back via trade in. I'm nervous and I feel like my trade in box from Apple is too small for the 15PM. Its sort of bulging in the middle so im afraid if its mishandled it will crack the glass... but im a paranoid person to begin with.

I mailed my parents old phones in a year ago when they got 15s and they had no issues either.

Yeah US. I said I didn't get the trade in kit with the phone (I didn't, it was shipped separately) and they let me complete it in store. They even applied the value to my credit card directly.

In all the years I’ve been doing trade ins, the only time I had an issue is with the AWU1. It went missing at the Oakland hub and I got the red ‘delivery exception’ icon on the FedEx app.

I called Apple, told them what happened, they called back within a few hours and said they would issue the trade-in credit, no problem.

The 16PM and the AWU2 I sent yesterday already arrived and I already got the ‘we’re good’ email from Apple.

None of the comments above mentioned the Alarm Bell (to me) that you mentioned: FedEx!!
I quit using them 15 years ago, and when I ever order anything I always make sure they don’t use FedEx, and if that’s the only option, I don’t place the order.
Just this afternoon I saw a video entitled “FedEx vs UPS” or something like that, all Doorcam videos, and it was ridiculous. One clip showed a FedEx truck pulling into a driveway, he kicked a medium-size box onto the cement, and drove off; a bit later a UPS truck pulled up, guy got out with a 6” box, saw the larger pkg on the cement, set his pkg onto the larger one, picked them both up (and you could see the fedex pkg weighed a lot), and set them down by the door. Wish I’d bookmarked that video, but I know there’s a lot of them.

I always take photos prior to dropping off, and get a receipt. I dropped mine off at FedEx on Saturday, and Apple received it and accepted the trade Monday afternoon. Fastest the process has been for me.

UPS will be the carrier for my trade in return. I wonder if they choose different carriers per region unless it's who you traded it in with. For example I am Tmobile, but used Apple.

However when I drop off I always request a receipt. I forgot to take pics of my device. It had a few light scratches near the charging port, but thats to be expected with the blue titanium of the 15 Pro Max.

I don't worry, but I also assume that when it comes into carrier’s possession there is no need to. If it’s gets stolen in transit then surely that is on the carrier to make right and probably an auto-accept for the customer on apple’s end. Just don’t put it in a sketchy drop box on a Friday afternoon and instead hand it to a person that will give you a receipt back.

I dropped my 15PM off this morning at UPS. Checked the tracking and it says "Dropped off in Hagerstown MD" when I in fact dropped it off in Martinsburg WV. Extremely strange but its in their hands now.

Have you ever thought of putting your trade in box with the phone into another box? The box would definitely look different and shouldn’t bring attention like it would without a second box.

Sent 3, 2 out of 3 made it. Fedex lost one.

they give you a drop off receipt. that's all you need
I have my drop off receipt. It was delivered Friday.

Ironically when I log in via the Apple Store app it says my phone has 7 days to be returned before I forfeit any proposed credit. When I log in via the web portal on my MacBook it says they received it, but its just says "trade in initiated."

Something seems a miss here. Im going to give it one more day before I call Apple and ask if they have it or not.

You sure they knew what you were talking about and didn't just give you credit for a phone they thought you owned outright? Why would they give you anything back on your card?

I only ask this because a few years ago, in Connecticut, i tried this exact thing after I had issues the year prior with someone stealing my trade in at the FedEx depot in Norwich. I had to deal with Apple for weeks after that until they finally closed the case and sided with me.

Trying to avoid that mess again, the following year i went to an Apple Store hoping to just hand in my trade in after i had already received the new phone from UPS. However, nobody had any idea what i was talking about! They had actually never even heard of the iPhone Upgrade Program at that time. Not even the store manager who they got to come out to chat with me. They tried to give me a trade in value on the phone, not understanding what the iPhone Upgrade Program was or how it worked, and that it should just cancel the rest of the loan. It was completely bizarre. So i've never tried it again.

I'd be very happy to hear that they actually do this now, though.
