Assuming the view is from the outside...
It is. The plans mention that fact and discuss how well it is meant to hold up to wind. Its placement outdoor would put both the curved edge and the leaf on the correct side.

Applying ockhams razor, is it more likely that a super-secretive company known to be putting on a major show at that time in that city has rented a large venue to do it in?

Or that there's really a massive trade show with thousands of attendees that has made no announcements or public plans that is planning to affix a giant misshapen star to one of the most famous and historic buildings in the city?

I'm locking in my answer.

Is this building bigger than the one Apple used last year? And last year they announced not only the new iPhone's but also, Apple Pay and the Apple Watch. If Apple are using this bulilding maybe it's to show off the Apple TV along with other products.

The latest report is saying that it could be used to invite TV people in order to unveil the new Apple TV

Personally i don't think so, Apple have never made a big deal out of the Apple TV box, it was once considered a "hobby" by Apple. If Apple have hired this building then there is a reason, last years building was smaller than this one and they unveiled a new product last year with the Apple Watch. Maybe all the rumours are true (i still doubt it tho) and Apple is planning on announcing new iPhone's, new Apple TV and new iPad's. I just can't see why they would do that tho especially when they usually have an October event for Mac's and iPad's.

I believe the reason Apple booked the Flint Center last year was because more Apple employees were at the event than usually are for keynotes. When does Apple usually send out media invites? A week before the event?

The could be true, but the rumoured building for this event (it's not confirmed) holds 7,000 people, to me that seems a bit excessive unless Apple plans on a big event. The Apple Watch was big last year for people to get their hands on and press to take photo's. Yea it's usually a week before, so we can expect the invites maybe Friday or Monday?

So I did some more digging, and I found something interesting.

According to an agenda for the San Fransisco Transportation Agency, the street in front of the venue is ONLY closed on September 9th, even though Adams and Associates have the place reserved for a longer portion of time. (On the link scroll to section M)

If this is indeed Apple, then they seem to be going to a lot of trouble. We will all find out when the invitations are sent out. What's also interesting is that this building was used by Apple to unveil the Apple 2, last years building was used by Apple to unveil the Macintosh.

Did nobody else make the connection with the Civic Auditorium and the adjacent Brooks Hall being the site of the old West Coast Computer Faire, where the Apple ][ was first introduced to the public in 1977?

Wonder what they've got in store for us 38 years later?

I totally feel AppleTV is no longer going to be a hobby.... There could possibly be a big rollout for it, and there will be more to come with content deals down the road that will add even more features. Making the AppleTV a Home services hub, media center, streaming content center, With Apps and game playing is not a hobby but the center of all things Apple for the home. :) To do this, there will be some serious hardware upgrades and I feel the remote will be radically different than it is today, with even iPhone like touch interface, where you can use voice and use for controlling games.

I even thought the star could be to represent a movie service. BUT that is a stretch

This is possible but would it really need that building? Unless the Apple TV is bigger update than everyone thought. But I still kind of feel it's a bit of a small venue just for iPhones and even a new Apple TV. I'm probably wrong but could it be that my previous thoughts were incorrect and Apple are in fact going to release new iPhones, Apple TV and new iPad's? I still feel iPads will be better suited for the October event along with new Macs. If Apple are going to the trouble of getting this building and adding security then there has to be a reason.

I know this place very well. Did a few parade's there for Grateful Dead over the past several years.

NYE Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Gives you an idea just how big this place would be for an Apple Event.

Well done - haven't seen this anywhere else. Especially since no other venues seemingly available as possibilities for Sept. 9th, this definitely seems to be the place.

Now I'm more curious why this venue rather than whether this venue. I do expect the Apple TV to be a pretty major announcement, so maybe that's all there is to it. Maybe they need some of that room to set up demo areas or even home kit stuff.

The star could have some significance due to the relationship with Disney a la "When you wish upon a star......" and an increased content deal. They could be opening up a streaming service similar to Apple Music for video on demand. While my comment is undoubtably a reach of the longest kind, it does prompt the discussion into the VOD apple TV streaming service & how best to generate new revenue using the current itunes catalog. They took on Pandora & Spotify, why not Netflix?

That star can easily be replaced with the Apple logo.

Look at the document and note it says approximate size. If this were the actual sign it wouldn't be an approximation.
