I believe you have to actually have your contact info in the phone, and have your address entered so that the phone KNOWS where "home" is, just the same as "work"...

If you go to a place every day that doesn't mean it's "work" necessarily.

Yes but a few points/questions...
a) so surely it's a combination of both location history and contact addresses, so it knows when to tell you about a travel time to home/work, or any other place in your addresses.
b) if you go to place X regularly and predictably and don't have it in your addresses, will it still give advice on how long to get to X? (Using first line of X address or something?)
c) If you regularly visited an address on another contact, would it give info on that?

Just my observations...I'm not complaining about the feature! haha

It accumulates ALL of the locations you've visited. So, there's no way to delete selected locations. I found this out because, after my g/f broke up with me (and was at her place quite a bit), it took about a week or so for the home screen to stop telling me it'd take x amount of time to get to her house.

A few weeks later, I dog sat for my sister for a few days and it took 3-4 days for it to stop telling me it'd take x amount of time to drive there as well.

I couldn't find a way to delete the history for just those specific locations. If anyone knows how to do it (for my future reference), I'd love to know!

It is kinda cool to see the map with all the points on it where you've been.

Did you try this?

It's learned behavior, it takes a while to start working. As dasx pointed out you can see your frequent locations buried in the Settings app. As these locations grow and more data is gathered about them (what days you're typically there, when you're typically there, how long you're typically there, etc) you will eventually see notes in the "Today" section of Notification Center around the times that iOS anticipates you to be traveling.

For instance, around 1pm I'll start to get notices that it would take 15 minutes to travel to the address of my favorite lunch spot. Around 4pm I'll get notices that it will take about 23 minutes to travel home. Around 6:30-7am I'll get notices that it takes about 20 minutes to travel to work.

Since home and work are pretty constant iOS knows which is which based on the hours I'm there. Since my lunch spot changes it only knows that I travel to this certain address 2-3 times a week, but not every day.

The key is patience. Once your iPhone has built up data, without being wiped/restored/etc, over a few weeks you'll start to see this. Works beautifully for me.

I left for work one morning and I checked Notification Center to see if it worked, and here's what happened...

"It will take you 4 minutes to get home"

...Uh, I just left for work... I'll check it again in a little bit.

"It will take you 10 minutes to get home"

...wow, really?

"It will take you 18 minutes to get home"

...nevermind.

First noticed it working for me yesterday when i saw "Right now, it would take you about 14 minutes to drive home" in the notification center under Today tab. All day today is hasn't appeared.

Anyone else having issues today?
(iPhone 4S with latest iOS7)

Does everyone that it works for have the places stored under contacts?
